Welcome to all! This week s focus: I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. THE INVOCATION THE ORDER OF SERVICE I. WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD We invoke ( call upon ) the name of our Triune God. PASTOR: We begin our Savior s Divine worship service today, remembering and celebrating the day of Pentecost, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ALL: Amen! II. WE PRAISE OUR LORD OPENING HYMN: #227 [Red Hymnal] 1. Come, Holy Ghost, in love, Shed on us from above Thine own bright ray. Divinely good Thou art; Thy sacred gifts impart, To gladden each sad heart. Oh, come today! 2. Come, tenderest Friend and best, Our most delightful Guest, With soothing power. Rest which the weary know, Shade mid the noontide glow, Peace when deep griefs o'erflow, Cheer us this hour! III. OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US 1 ST SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ RESPONSIVE READING OF 1 CORINTHIANS 2:6-16 Our first Scripture Lesson for this Pentecost not only teaches what the Holy Spirit does, but also shows the eye opening connection between our three Scripture lessons today. What wisdom does the Spirit supply us through the Word of God according to this section? P: We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. ALL: None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. P: However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived ALL: What God has prepared for those who love him"-- P: But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? ALL: In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 2 P a g e

P: We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, ALL: For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. P: The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" ALL: But we have the mind of Christ. OPENING HYMN: #227 [Red Hymnal] 4. Exalt our low desires, Extinguish passion's fires, Heal every wound. Our stubborn spirits bend, Our icy coldness end, Our devious steps attend While heavenward bound. 5. Come, all the faithful bless; Let all who Christ confess His praise employ. Give virtue's rich reward, Victorious death accord And, with our glorious Lord, Eternal joy! 2 ND SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ JOHN 14:15-21 The Holy Spirit (the Helper), continues to reveal to us the truth of God s Holy Word and teaches us how to walk in it. Notice the relationship between the Word of God and the word love in this section. What is Jesus point to you and me? 15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." 3 P a g e

OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH ~ THE THIRD ARTICLE (SANCTIFICATION) The Third Article is a statement of faith about the work of the God the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified, and kept me in true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead and give to me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most certainly true. CONGREGATION FAVORITE: #225 [Red Hymnal] SERMON MEDITATION read/watch sermons and services online at www.fdllutheran.org Jesus said, " Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" ~Luke 11:28 Ezekiel 36:22-28 22 "Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name's sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. 23 "And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD," says the Lord GOD, "when I am hallowed in you before their eyes. 24 "For I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 "Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 "Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God. The Reputation of the LORD s Name is Reputable! 1. Because He and us who Profane, 2. Because He and in His Name! 4 P a g e

IV. WE OFFER OURSELVES TO OUR LORD COMMUNION ANNOUNCMENT: (See also blue handout in entry tract rack) Holy Communion is rightly called a Sacrament because it is a Sacred act; not in what WE do for Christ, but in what Christ does for US! Because God s Word presents the reception of this Sacrament as a most intimate expression of spiritual and confessional unity (1 Corinthians 1:10; 10:16-17 Romans 16:17-18), we ask only those who have publicly professed such oneness of faith and belief with us by membership here or another CLC church come forward at this time. This is not a judgment of anyone s faith, but rather an expression of ours. Please speak with pastor if you are seeking a church home or have any questions. We d love to have you! AN OFFERING OF THANKFUL HEARTS TO THE LORD So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ~ 2 Corinthians 9:7 OFFERING MEDITATION: Preach the Gospel N. Radichel / Eric Libby 12.09.04 I will remember the words of my Lord, the Great Command He gave to me To all people great and small, To every nation one and all There is only one thing to say Preach the Gospel (x3) to all! Go and baptize and teach them all things, I ll be with you till the end of the age I am not ashamed of Jesus For in Him is righteousness Lord, You re the One who tells me I am the Way, Truth, and Life FOLLOWED BY THE OFFERING HYMN: [Red hymnal #507:1,6] Spread, oh, spread, thou mighty Word, Spread the kingdom of the Lord, Wheresoe'er His breath has giv'n, Life to beings meant for heav'n. Daily Bible Readings for Home Devotions Mon Ezekiel 36:22-28 As introduction to Pentecost When Israel threw dirt on God s good name what was He to do? He sent them off to reform school in Babylon, where He readied them for a new life blessed by His Holy Spirit thus proving Himself to be good-hearted, forgiving, and committed to rehabilitating His people. Stay tuned. Tues John 14:15-21 Jesus had a hand in Pentecost, too, because it s His Holy Spirit who sets up shop in the human heart and turns out His superior products such as love for God, dedication to His directives, and loving devotion to our Savior (21). God be praised for Pentecost! Wed Acts 2:1-4, 41-42 Thanks to Jesus, the great day finally arrived when He deluged His disciples with His Spirit so that they could testify to Him in the languages of foreign-born Jews. The Spirit did His miracle on the hearers so that on Pentecost Sunday 3,000 souls were added to the Holy Christian Church and the Jerusalem congregation. Thurs Jeremiah 31:1-6 Jeremiah knew God s prescription for Israel s ailment. After God injects hearts with repentance, He administers loads of steadfast love (3) and follows with dietary maintenance (4-6). But why go to all the bother? Because God wanted Israel to be/remain the cradle for Jesus which meant re-patriating them to Palestine. Fri John 15:26-27 It always takes God to do God s work: creation didn t happen by itself, and conversion doesn t, either. As God sent Himself (Jesus) from heaven to do the work of redeeming sinners, so from heaven Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to do the work of converting sinners and to serve as our Helper, Advocate, Intercessor. Hallelujah! Sat 1 Corinthians 2:1-16 Although God is a mystery to others (6-9), He is no longer a mystery to us, simply because He made the grand effort of revealing Himself to us through His Spirit who enables us to know, understand, and accept all that God has done for us (11-12). Then He inspires us to divulge God s secret wisdom to others (13). In point of fact, the Holy Spirit is responsible for creating Christ-believers and spreading Christianity throughout the ages and across the globe. Conclusion: God s Holy Spirit delivers God s love-energy to humanity via the transmission line of God s Word, and that s how the Holy Spirit enlightens hearts and homes. All praise the Day of Pentecost! Amen! 12 P a g e
