PASTOR S COLUMN PARISH COMEDY NIGHT: Mark Friday, January 18, on your calendar! We will be holding another parish comedy night consisting of dinner and professional comedians with clean humor. These have been wonderful evenings and we hope you will consider joining us for this year s event. Invite family, friends and neighbors. REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS: The readings for the feast of the Holy Family as listed in the Breaking Bread Book are some of the possible choices for this feast day. There are only a few feasts that have multiple choices of readings. The first reading from the first book of Samuel is one that might be interesting to go back and read the full story. Hannah was not able to have children and had prayed in the Temple for a child. The priest Eli thinks she is drunk because of the desperation of her prayer. But once she tells him her story he tells her she will have a child. And indeed she does. The story today is about how Hannah now dedicates this child back to God and leaves him in the Temple to serve the community there. It is hard for us to even imagine giving away our only child for service to God s people. The important connection this story makes to Mary is that much of what Hannah says in her prayers is reflected in the prayers we find in the Scripture that are attributed to Mary particularly the Magnificat. This extraordinary woman Hannah is seen to prefigure the model disciple Mary in Luke s gospel. Mary and Joseph today have to struggle with this reality of Jesus needing to be in his Father s House. They will have to struggle with the reality of Jesus leaving them behind to pursue the work of proclaiming the gospel and eventually offering his life in service to all God s people. Today they are not quite ready for that. We might reflect today on how we have made tremendous sacrifices in service of our families. Parents have sacrificed time to coach their kids teams, to be leaders in scout troops, or to work with them on homework. The time and money sacrificed at work to support the family, to put kids through college, and enable them to have opportunities that you did not have. Sacrificing careers and status in order to be at home or to be more involved in your family s life. These are the sacrifices that make our homes a domestic church. John reminds us in the second reading that we are all children of God. We are part of the family of God. Just as it is hard for Mary and Joseph to understand fully who Jesus was, it is also difficult for us to understand fully who we are as children of God. It involves much more than meets the eye. The heart of this feast of the Holy Family is the depth of love that is offered each day in the domestic church, our homes, and the depth of the love that God offers us each and every day as members of his family.
