St. Teresa of Avila Church Page 2 Fourth Sunday of Easter April 25, 2010 I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. Acts 13:47b WHO ARE WE? Who are we today as we sing We are his people, the sheep of his flock in the responsorial psalm? It is very easy to think that it is just us, at this Mass, or just the members of this parish or diocese, or perhaps we are thinking it is all Roman Catholics in the United States. But we are much larger and broader than that. If you take a globe or atlas in your hand, it would be difficult to point to any place on land where we aren t singing this psalm today. Not only that, but we are the saints who survived the great time of trial, as described in Revelation s reading today. And we continue to grow not just in numbers but in complexity and diversity as the work begun by Paul and Barnabas in today s first reading continues. But, even though who we are, the flock of the Lord, is almost beyond our ability to comprehend, we all hear the voice of Jesus Christ, our one and only shepherd, as we continue through the Easter season to follow him faithfully. Of the 29 counties in the geographically sprawling Diocese of Salt Lake City, only 16 have a resident pastor. These mission dioceses need funding for ministerial training, seminaries, and religious education in order to nurture the faith and administer basic pastoral care in the rural areas of the state. Please give generously. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The Jews angrily reject Paul and Barnabas preaching. They then turn their energies to the Gentiles (Acts 13:14, 43-52). Fourth Sunday of Easter Page 4 FIRST COMMUNION Next weekend is the one I like best in the year because sixty of our children will receive Holy Communion for the first time. It is a time the children have looked forward to as well as their mothers, fathers, grandparents and extended families. First Communion Day is a day we all remember, a day of blessing forever. Congratulations to all the children and to all who have prepared them to welcome Christ in the Eucharist. I will ask the children to pray for the parishioners on the day of their First Communion - - let us also pray for the children. In the Gospel According to Luke we read: (Los Altos 1997) NOTES FROM MY RETREAT But Peter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking about. At that moment, while he was still speaking, a cock crew; and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter... And Peter went outside and wept bitterly. I had a fairly good relationship with the Lord. I would ask Him for things, converse with Him, praise Him, thank Him..... But always I had this uncomfortable feeling that He wanted me to look at Him. And I would not. I would talk, but look away when I sensed He was looking at me. I was afraid. I should find an accusation there of some un-repented sin. I thought I should find a demand there; there would be something He wanted from me. One day I finally summoned up courage and looked! There was no accusation. There was no demand. The eyes just said, I love you. God Bless, Fr. Mike Giggle: ********************************************** A surgeon, an architect and a politician were arguing about whose profession was the oldest. Said the surgeon: Eve was made from Adam s rib, and that surely was a surgical operation. Maybe, said the architect, But prior to that, order was created out of chaos, and that was an architectural job. But, interrupted the politician, somebody created the chaos first. ********************************************* An Irishman was asked, How did we lose the war if we won so many battles? An old-timer said, We just wore ourselves out whipping the ol enemy.

Fourth Sunday of Easter Page 5 MYSTICISM Why Religion can t live without it? Excerpts from three great mystics for our reflection. The Sufi movement was dedicated to the quest for God through renunciation and prayer. Reflect on these words of the female Saint Rab a al Adawiyya 801. I love thee with two loves, love of my happiness, and perfect love, to love thee as is thy due. My selfish love is that I do naught but think on thee, excluding all beside; but that purest love, which is thy due, is that the veils which hide thee fall, and I gaze on thee. No praise to me in either this or that. Nay, thine the praise for both that love and this. St. Julian of Norwich astonishing illuminations: In this he showed me something small, no bigger than a hazelnut, lying in the palm of my hand, as it seemed to me, and it was as round as a ball. I looked at it with the eye of my understanding and thought: What can this be? I was amazed that it could last, for I thought that because of its littleness it would suddenly have fallen into nothing. And I was answered in my understanding: It lasts and always will, because God loves it; and thus everything has being through the love of God. Rumi: The poet who tries to push the limits of language in order to unite with the Holy. I died as mineral and became a plant, I died as a plant and rose to animal, I died as animal and I was man. Why should I fear? When was I less by dying? Yet once more I shall die as man, to soar with angels blest; but even from angelhood I must pass on: all except God doth perish. When I have sacrificed my angel soul, I shall become what no mind e er conceived. Oh, let me not exist! For Non-existence proclaims in organ tones: To Him we shall return. Have you had the chance to read our Catholic Mystics? To reflect and pray with them? Are you interested in such an endeavor? Contact Sr. Anita@stteresaauburn.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JUST FAITH will begin a new group in September. This program gives you an opportunity to deepen your love and commitment to the Lord. It consists of weekly meetings from September through April, a beginning and closing retreat, and immersion experiences with the poor in our community. Participants will also read about a dozen books, listen to speakers, watch videos, discuss and pray. It is a serious commitment and a call to conversion. Just Faith is not an ongoing ministry. It is a program that will inform and shape whatever ministry you have. Coming to know the Lord Jesus more personally, being a stronger member of the parish, and leading a more peaceful life are goals of the program. Contact Deacon Ed Morgado at (530) 878-7443 or email: eamorgado@gmail.com to get more information or to make a reservation.
