St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Though we find ourselves in Mid-Summer the Confirmation Class is in the midst of their Confirmation Interviews. God bless them all and their good parents. You see, we also ask questions to the parents. The common request to both student and parent is to tell the Act of Contrition. It is the one feature of the interview that is formational while all the other questions are informational. Now is the time as they are developing the skill to judge others the student and parent are reminded that the Act of Contrition helps to judge themselves. A good and humble start. Catholic education is promoted in three levels. The first four years focus on the biblical stories and lives of the Saints. The second four years are all about numbers, as will be demonstrated in the Religion Clock below. And the third set of four years, high school, involve the principles of the Faith applied in the areas of evangelization, apologetics and bioethics the fast lane. Religion Clock. Good hunting. (1.) One God. Jesus had one mother, who was his earthly father. (2.) Two testaments of the Bible. Jesus Christ is true...god and Man. Two parts of a human being...body and soul. Two actions of the soul... intellect and will. Two great commandments...love God above all things, Love neighbor as thy self. Two mediums in which the providence of God is expressed... scripture and tradition. Two types of Prayer...mental, and vocal. (3.) Three persons in the Trinity...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three theological virtues...faith, hope, and love. Three wisemen... Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. Three parts to a sin... The act is wrong, you know it is wrong, and you do it anyway. Three apostles with Jesus at the transfiguration... Peter, James, and John. Three types of Sin...original, venial, and mortal. Three who are affected by a sin...god, self, and the other person. Three archangels... Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Three kinds of grace...sanctifying, actual, and sacramental. (4.) Four Gospel writers... Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Four Cardinal virtues...prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude. Four Mysteries of the Rosary... Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, Glorious. Four marks of the Catholic Church...One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. (5.) Five Wounds of Christ. Five colors at Mass...White-Gold, Red, Green, Purple-Black. Five decades of any one mystery of the rosary. Five Steps to a Good Confession...examine your conscience, be truly sorry, have purpose of amendment, confess your sins, and accept your penance. (6.) Six Holy Days of Obligation...January 1st, Solemnity of Mary; Ascension Thursday; August 15th, Assumption; November 1st, All Saints; December 8th, Immaculate Conception; December 25th, Christmas. (7.) Seven Sacraments... Baptism, Penance, Eucharist, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick. Seven Capital Sins... pride, covetousness, lust, anger, gluttony, envy, and sloth (laziness). Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit... wisdom, understanding, knowledge, council, piety, fortitude, and fear of the Lord. (8.) Eight Beatitudes... Gospel of Matthew, 5th Chapter. (9.) What is a Novena? Nine Legions of Angels... angels, archangels, thrones, seraphim, cherubim, dominations, powers, virtues, principalities. (10.) Ten Commandments You know. (11.) Eleven Apostles after Judas left the Last Supper early. (12.) Twelve Tribes of Israel. Twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit. Many thanks to all of you for your great generosity to Fr. Waisi, our recent visitor from Haiti. We must never lose the enthusiasm, in our prayers and generosity, for the foreign missions where our brothers and sisters live among earthquakes for adverse weather. Fr. Waisi exemplifies the zeal for the Faith by their continued spiritual and sacramental devotions. Also many thanks to you for your kindness to Jordan Evans who addressed each of the Masses last week about his apostolic ventures in the FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) program (www.focus.org,https://focusoncampus.org/home). Jordan leaves us with a note of Thanksgiving. Let us pray for one another. Father Gould Parish Thank You from Jordan Evans I cannot express how thankful I am to all of you parishioners for taking the time to listen to me this weekend and for all of your support. I was overwhelmed by the generosity that I received not only in terms of a willingness to support me in my mission, but in the charitable words that so many shared with me. I will treasure this experience forever and will take you all with me in my prayers as I journey northward to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It is a true blessing to be a part of the community here at St. John s and an even greater blessing to have a home in the Catholic Church as brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you for being a testament to the love of our greater Family, I cannot wait to share in this mission with everyone. St. Francis Xavier and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, pray for us!

If you haven t started yet, don t despair, because Our Lady of Fatima s promise can be counted on whenever you start. But don t delay; start as soon as you can so Our Lady can assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who on the first Saturday of five consecutive months: 1) Go to Confession, 2) Receive Holy Communion, 3) Pray five decades of the Rosary, and 4) Meditate for 15 minutes on the Mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Order s top-rated insurance program continues to do this today, as do the good works of individual Knights, who gave more than 75 million service hours and $177,500,673 in Charitable Donations in 2016 illustrating how Catholics serve each other in fraternity and mercy.

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 30 July 2017 PARISH READING GROUP (Formerly Year of Faith Book Discussion Group ). Our newest book is Strangers in a Strange Land: Living the Catholic Faith in a Post-Christian World by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. The Archbishop of Los Angeles has called this an important book about the most important questions... [and a] must-read for Catholics and anyone concerned for America's future. The Wall Street Journal says that Archbishop Chaput is "erudite and eloquent... and [that] his book should be read by seriousminded people of whatever religious, partisan or intellectual inclination." Father Gould will lead the first discussion of this new book on Friday, August 11, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Knights Room below Mercy Hall. For a copy of the new book or for further for information, send an email to jvolpe@infionline.net or call 540-272-0742. JOIN THE ST. JOHN S ALTAR SOCIETY Yes an Altar Society is being formed here at St. John s. An altar society is a group of laypersons in a parish church who maintain the ceremonial objects used in worship. The core mission of the altar society is to provide and care for the bread, wine, vessels, linens, vestments, floral arrangements, decorations, tend the candles, clean the sanctuary and anything else needed for the altar of worship. Please note: One person will NOT be responsible for performing all of these tasks and that is why we ask you to consider joining us in creating this most important Altar Society. If you are able to find the time, please consider dedicating a few hours each month in service to our church. If you are able to assist in this very much needed service, please contact the parish office at 540-347-2922 or contact Norma Francis at 540-364- 4903 (email: normajfrancis@gmail.com) We want to see God's house beautiful.
