The epiphany of the lord january 6, 2019 A Reflection Dear St. Martin of Tours Family, This weekend we join Fr. Saju in thanking God for 25 years as a priest. St. John Paul II described priesthood is a gift and a mystery. I am sure that these are two words that is the heart of Fr. Saju, and knowing that it is a gift and a mystery brings about gratitude in his priestly heart. A principal memory of the feast of Epiphany is of the wise men (Magi) bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They also bring gifts for all time. Not just the gold, frankincense, and myrrh, but wisdom. They had a certain type of wisdom or common sense. They followed their star, sent their way by God. Think today on who have been your guides. The wise men met wise and not so wise guides on their way. In simple and big ways: people who may have re-pointed out your star to you as you went a bit astray, drank too much, involved in unsatisfying relationships, or being persuaded into a wrong job; and then people who have helped us keep our dream alive, like the ones who kept the wise men on the right path and helped them home: people who gave good advice, loved you at a bad time, a book or a sermon, or warned you against different Herods, and others who pointed out a new way, like the angel who said to them to go back a different way. Having lived with Fr. Saju since the day we arrived together in St. Martin of Tours of Parish, I have witnessed a man and a priest who point others not to himself, but to the true Star Jesus. I am sure that many of you have witnessed this priestly attitude in him pointing others to Jesus the true Star. We are truly blessed and grateful for the gift of the priesthood of Fr. Saju. I would like to share this reflection of a Jesuit, Donal Neary SJ, as Fr. Saju s mission to our parish: I am the star that guided the wise men to Jesus. I was delighted to get this job from God. God gave me the light and I guided them from the East, over the desert, through towns, over the sea. I was so bright that they saw me during the day. I brought them to the crib to Mary, Joseph and the child. I ll never leave them I am the light of God s love. May we be grateful for guides on our path, and be as best we can as wise guides to others. ~ Fr. Faith Formation Corner This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of the Epiphany and it is also the last weekend of the Christmas season because the Christmas season actually lasts from Christmas day until the Feast of the Epiphany. Epiphany means revelation from above and many understand this to refer to the revelation that Jesus was the Son of God to the wise men from the East. (Matthew 2:1) For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to reflect on what has been revealed to us about Jesus this Christmas season. To begin, let us reflect on Jesus birth. If we read the different accounts found in Matthew (Mt 1:18-2:15) and Luke s (Lk 1:26-2:20) gospels, what resonates with us? What might God be revealing to us through each of these accounts? Can we identify with the wise men or the shepherds? Are we able to imagine how Mary and Joseph are feeling as they behold their new baby boy that they have been told is the Messiah? Celebrating Christmas with loved ones undoubtedly involved some form of exchanging gifts. How does our reflection on Jesus birth transform this experience of our gift giving and receiving? What might we want to offer Jesus to show our love and appreciation for him and all that he has done for us? As we prepare to conclude this Christmas season, let us each reflect on what it means to each of us that Jesus is the Son of God. Let us also ask Jesus for the grace to grow more aware of what his humanity and divinity mean for us today.
