Faith hears the inaudible, sees the invisible, and receives the ipossible. M Y D E A R S I S T E R S A N D B R O T H E R S I N C H R I S T, e have heard this Sund s gospel episode ore than a dozen ties, and we know that its central essage is about gratitude. Ten lepers begged Jesus to heal the, and they were not denied of their plea. They were healed, they were cleansed, and they received the freedo and dignity that they lost when they contracted the disease of leprosy. They were dead (at least in the eyes of their society), and they were brought back to life. In their jubilation for the iracle they received, they hurried out to do what Jesus told the to do: show theselves to the priest who will declare that they have truly been healed. But one of the, a Saaritan, realized the agnitude of Jesus iracle. He turned around and ran back to Jesus to give Hi thanks. The sad thing is: the rest failed to show gratitude. I a glad that you are reading this which eans that you were at Holy Mass tod. The celebration of the Holy Eucharist is true thanksgiving, and is the ost perfect w to acknowledge God s goodness to us. The reason why we are alws expected to be at Mass (at least every Sund) is because God wants us to show our gratitude to Hi. It is our opportunity to recognize how God has been so gracious in showering us with His blessings every d. During our weekly worship as a counity, we are grateful that we receive the ost iportant blessing of all the Most Holy Body and Most Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is true, gratitude is the surest w to ind peace, contentent and happiness in this life. It shows our sense of huility because we acknowledge our dependence on God, while it also wards off sel ishness and pride. There is an old legend about a an who found the barn where Satan kept his seeds of evil ready to be sown in the huan heart. When Satan was questioned if those seeds grew in abundance wherever they were sown, he reluctantly aditted that there was one place in which he could never get the seeds to thrive. And where is that? asked the inquirer. Satan replied, In the heart of a grateful an. INVITATION: We have an opportunity to listen to the sharing of Fr. "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?" Jesus had worked a iracle of healing for ten people af licted with leprosy. They had cried out for hi to have pity on the, and he did. But only one eber of this group took the tie to return to Jesus, fall at his feet, and thank hi. Why? Perhaps soe were so busy rejoicing that they forgot to give thanks. Perhaps others thought they deserved to be healed and thus did not think in ters of gratitude for the iracle. Mbe soe in the group weren't sure that the healing was going to last. Or, possibly, soe of the were just sel ish and lazy. Whatever the case, Jesus af irs the one an who does the right thing: "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you." Jesus thus establishes this Saaritan an as our exaple. We too are to glorify "God in a loud voice" for all that he has done for us. So, what exactly has God done for us? What are the iracles in our lives that we have failed to notice, to believe, or to appreciate? Undoubtedly the answers will be different for everyone, with one ain exception: we are all called to give thanks for the gift of life, of course. This is the irst iracle God worked on our behalf! Bringing us into existence to live and love is a gift we ight tend to take for granted. But surely, we can be thankful for ore. We would all do well to re lect on the ultitude of God's gifts in our lives. Soeties we have to pause long enough to think and recognize those things we should be grateful for. But a little effort in this regard is well worth it to avoid being like the ungrateful lepers. Instead, we be the ones who give thanks where thanks is due. In everything, be it a thing sensed or a thing known, God is hidden within.
