W E L C O M E TO THE P A R I S H OF S T. BE R N A R D! Dear Friends, Before Bishop Morlino s death, he asked all priests to discuss a very important topic that is becoming an epidemic - almost as much as the addiction to opioid medications. It is the addiction to pornographic material, and the sins which ensue from it. Pornography can have a host of effects upon the person committing the sin, and the relationships they share with others. I hope that my homily will give you a bit more insight into this epidemic as we unite in prayer this weekend with those who are struggling with this addiction. Many dub this an addition that only teenagers and young adults struggle to overcome. That couldn t be further from the truth. It affects people of all ages - men and women alike. The grace of strength to overcome this addiction is given us by our Lord, as well as many others who are willing to help us. The yearly offertory statements are being prepared at this time and will be sent to households next week. Please watch for a double-window envelope from the parish and do not throw it away! A copy of last year s financial statement will also be included in the mailing so you can see how we did overall last fiscal year. You may also request that your statements be emailed to you. If you wish your statement to be emailed, please go to our web site (www.sbmsn.org) and fill out the form on the home page. We ll send your statement and a copy of the financial report to the email address you specify. We begin the season of Ordinary Time, which will take us through the beginning of March until Ash Wednesday, which occurs on March 6th. As a good nun used to tell me, there is nothing ordinary about anything in the Church, and that includes Ordinary Time! Ordinary Time is a time for us to reflect on the ways that God has moved our hearts in the seasons preceding Ordinary Time. In this instance, we have the seasons of Advent and Christmas to reflect on. How was Christ present to you during Advent? How did He move your heart? How did you feel as you gazed upon the Christ child in His nativity? The color for Ordinary Time is green, and green is a symbol of growth and new life. Use these weeks to discern how the Lord has asked you to grow in your relationship with Him. Once Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent are upon us, we will not return to Ordinary Time until the beginning of July. The Lord is always inviting us to grow in our relationship with Him - spend some time in prayer in these coming weeks and think about how your heart has grown in love for Him in these beautiful seasons of Advent and Lent. I ve heard from a number of our priest friends at the Accademia in Rome. Fr. Federico is working at the Apostolic Nunciature in Ecuador. Fr. Giuseppe is still at the Nunciature in Brundi, and Fr. John Putzer (a priest from Madison) is still serving at the Nunciature in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Frs. Andrea and Luciano are nearing the end of their studies. It s wonderful to keep up with these priests and to hear about their work assisting the nuncios, or representatives of the Holy Father, in the countries where there are diplomatic relations with the Vatican. It s a very important ministry, and we are blessed to share in a small part of their formation and studies. I spoke with most of them at Christmas, and they are all sending their greetings and the assurance of their prayers for all of you. Peace, Fr. Michael Thanks from Lori Lauth Dear St. Bernard Parishioners - I wanted to include a little note of thanks to all of you for your cards, thoughts and prayers as I continue to receive chemotherapy treatments for my cancer. I was only with you for a short time before all this happened, and yet, so many of you have reached out with prayers and good wishes, and they mean so much to me, to my husband Michael, and my two boys, Ricky and Joey. Please know how grateful we are to all of you for your continued thoughts and prayers. I am tired, but in good spirits, all things considered. I will keep Fr. Michael updated, and he will share updates with you in the bulletin. God bless you! -Lori Lauth and Family

You may have heard someone speak as though science can explain all things and is the only true source of knowledge. Such thinking is really scientism: a philosophical outlook, and not science itself or scientific. Science has successfully explained so much about the material world and physical phenomena. However, there is much about life that cannot be explained by the laws of science alone. -David Tuschel, parishioner of St. Bernard Parish You are invited to a presentation which addresses his narrative into the cultural discourse of Scientific Materialism and its consequences. As a scientist, David brings a unique perspective, and his goal is to reinforce the Natural Law and to question the rationale and logic of current and dominant secular thought. We will meet in Room 1 of the Parish Center on Thursday, January 24th at 6:00pm. The presentation will take place at 6:30pm, followed by questions and answers for those who wish to stay. There is no cost for the evening. Bible Study on the Prophets. This 10-week study takes place on Wednesdays, from 6:00pm - 7:00pm, beginning January 9th. Material cost is $25. The Acts of the Apostles. This 20-week study takes place on Mondays, from 2:30pm - 4:00pm, beginning January 21st. Materials cost is $30. Lenten Study: Fulfilled. This seven week study takes place on Wednesdays during Lent from 1:00pm - 3:00pm and is repeated in the evening from 6:00pm - 7:00pm, beginning Wednesday, March 6th. This series explores the biblical roots of the Catholic faith. It uncovers God s consistent design for our worship of Him and His relationship with us. Materials cost is $25.
