THE CROWN

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR According to the calendar, there are 26 days until Christmas. Of course, that is according to the calendar. According to the American Marketplace, that is not the case. Christmas is no longer profitable as merely Christmas. So it has been acquired in a mildly hostile take-over, merged with other celebrations, and rebranded as Holiday. So it has been Holiday for a couple months now. Holiday began lurking behind Halloween in all the stores back in September. By the time we got to the final week of October, Holiday could barely contain itself. It began to push its way past the Jack O'Lanterns and skeletons to get our attention and, more importantly, our dollars. There was a time when Christmas was polite enough to hold the door for Thanksgiving, but those days are long gone. Boorish Holiday can no longer wait for the traditional beginning of its shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving but barges rudely ahead claiming the entire week. Holiday screams at us not to wait until the day after Thanksgiving. That will be too late! Begin your shopping on Thanksgiving. The stores will be open at 10pm! or 9pm! or 7pm! Or the heck with that! You can beat everybody else by starting your shopping on the Monday before Thanksgiving! But there is another voice to which we can listen. It is the quiet, peaceful voice of Advent. Advent, which begins today, does not want your money. It does not yell at you in the mounds of advertisements in the newspapers. It does not flash at you incessantly on the television or your computer screen. Advent just sits quietly in the shadows of a darkening December, wide-eyed and alert, watching for the one thing that everyone who is pre-occupied with Holiday will miss. It waits for Christmas. Even though it depends on this time of year so much, the American Marketplace is afraid of Christmas. That is because Christmas, plain and simple, is not about all the hype or the shopping and buying. Christmas itself is about the mystery of the Incarnation -- God dwelling in human flesh, human life, and human experience. The mystery of the Incarnation is not something flashy or colorful. It is not something that can be bought or sold. It is, however, wrapped and given. God wraps himself in human flesh, human life, and gives himself to us, to each and everyone of us. But that is a bit frightening. Holiday is far less mysterious and promises never to frighten. But Advent waits in the quiet darkness because it knows that the Incarnation is a quiet, dark, and even frightening mystery. Incarnation happens in the quiet of our deepest self. It happens in the darkness of the most hidden parts of us, even those parts we do not like. It happens in every human thought and emotion, in every human experience and encounter. Advent teaches us that God is with us, always with us, and that we can have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I am not advocating that you fight Holiday. Instead, use it and enjoy it for what it is worth. But remember that the American Marketplace and Holiday fear Christmas. They fear the message of simplicity and quiet. They fear the darkness of the inner most human soul because they think that it is empty. But you know differently. You know, through the mystery of the Incarnation, that your deepest core is not empty. It is filled with the Divine. It is illumined by the light of Christ. So do not let Holiday distract you from Advent. Keep watch with Advent in the quiet and darkness of December and allow it to lead you within to a place without hype, a place that cannot be bought or sold but can be wrapped. Allow Advent to show you the Divine within you, the image of God, wrapped in your flesh, in your life, in your experiences, in you. And don't forget: only 26 days until Christmas! Fr. Michael HOLY HOUR THIS FRIDAY There will be a Holy Hour this Friday, December 4, at 7:30pm in the Church. Please join us in prayer.

PREPARE, WAIT AND PRAY Lord, God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. As we enter the liturgical season of Advent, we are called to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Holy Child. We wait quietly, ponder the wonder of the Incarnation and prayer for both spiritual renewal and a deeper understanding of our relationship with Jesus Christ. This time of Holy Waiting should be a new beginning, a time to contemplate the awesome gift God gives us in His Son. The readings for the four Sundays of Advent help us to remember the true meaning of this season. The various symbols and colors we have in the church: the Advent wreath, the Holy Family, the Creche, the Christmas tree and purple linen are visible reminders of what the Scripture passages proclaim. Each of these symbols will be displayed in the church gradually during the weeks preceding the Nativity of the Lord, to help you really get ready for the Christ Child. This is not a time to be idle; rather it is genuine spiritual work to meet the Divine Infant as we should: renewed, with open hearts and filled with God s grace. The Advent wreath conveys the promise of eternal life in its circular shape and lit candles, the Light of Christ. On the First Sunday of Advent, the wreath will be blessed during the first Mass of this holy season. As we witness this blessing, we are reminded of the true meaning of this time, to live in hope for the coming of the Lord. In the first reading, the Prophet Jeremiah tells us, The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. We can begin our spiritual journey four the next four weeks and heed the words of Luke, Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man. By the Second Sunday of Advent, Mary and Joseph will be present in the church beginning their journey, awaiting the birth of Jesus, the Divine Infant. Saint Paul offers the prayer that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. The ox and cows will be present with the Creche, symbols of patient waiting for the promised royal birth of the long awaited Messiah. Our Savior is the King of kings, but His humble birth was in a manger, a Creche, the feeding trough of the stable. He is the Bread of Life. Rather than living as a titled man of privilege, Jesus came to serve all of humanity and we are called to serve one another. We are called to be ready, and in the words of the prophet Isaiah, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. The Third Sunday of Advent is also called Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin for rejoice. We rejoice because the waiting is almost over. We are encouraged to persevere, and to live in hope, to pray and rejoice always. This Sunday, the Holy Family will continue on their journey down the aisle, coming closer to the Creche, steadfast in their quest. How better for us to prepare as well than by heeding the words of Saint Paul in our words and deeds, Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. By the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the shepherds will be waiting near the Creche and the Christmas wreaths will be hung in the nave of the church. Taking the shape of a crown, the wreath reminds us of His Royal birth, the son of David. Made of evergreen, we see the promise of Eternal life, but we are also reminded of the crown of thorns during Christ s Passion. The star atop the Christmas tree is a symbol of our Savior, the Light of the World. In the First Reading, the prophecy of Micah gives us great hope as we await the Nativity of the Lord, He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, his God; and they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace. During Advent, come to Mass on Sunday, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and during the week. Pray together the Liturgy of the Hours, receive the Sacrament of Penance, and prepare to meet the Holy Child. When we participate in the liturgy of the Church, and contemplate the meaning of the different symbols of Christmas present in the church, we come to understand the mystery of the Incarnation with greater clarity. We await Christ s first coming in birth, the Incarnation, and anticipate His second coming, his return in glory, the Parousia. Advent can be a very fruitful season, freed from outward distractions if we persevere and prepare well. We can then truly rejoice as we celebrate the Nativity of the Lord, saying, Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L.

SYMBOLISM OF THE ADVENT WREATH The symbolism of the Advent Wreath is conveyed in its shape, construction and accompanying ritual. The circular shape points to the continuum of life; there is no beginning or end, rather, eternal life in the Kingdom of God. Fresh evergreen branches entwined together, shaped like the crown of thorns during Christ s Passion, remind us of the New Life promised to us by Christ in the Paschal Mystery. Lit candles represent the light of Christ; light to drive away sin and death as we are reborn in the Light of Christ, a share in the Incarnation. While the purple candles stand for preparation and penance, the white candle of the Third or Gaudete (Lt. rejoice ) Sunday, is the color of joy; the waiting is almost over. The Prayer of Blessing on the First Sunday of Advent before the lighting of the first candle beautifully expresses the Hope the Advent Wreath symbolizes: Lord, God, your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin. Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. THE THREE COMINGS OF ADVENT There are three distinct comings of the Lord of which I know, His coming to humankind, His coming into humankind, and His coming against humankind. St. Bernard: Third Sermon for Advent WOMEN S GUILD CHRISTMAS SOCIAL All women of the parish are invited to the Women s Guild Christmas Social on Thursday, December 3rd. GIVING TREE The Giving Tree for St. Martin de Porres Parish is located in the vestibule of church. Take an ornament with the age of the recipient, put the size of the clothing in the space provided (if applicable) and return the wrapped package to the vestibule of church. All gifts must be returned by Sunday, December 6th. Thank you for your generosity! CHRISTMAS CANTATA We are excited to announce the revival of the DI Christmas Cantata on the 25th anniversary of the last DI cantata production, Not a Creature Was Stirring, in cooperation with our school and parish music departments and our entire Divine Infant community! After our school bands have played their Christmas selections, our church will come alive as the voices of our children become the mice and cats who live in the church s storage room and custodian s quarters. The mouse and feline families are trying to understand the Christmas story based on what they have heard over the years during practices and Christmas programs held in the church. The families will sing, dance, sign and play hand chimes as they take you through the story as they get to the point of understanding that Jesus Brought Us Love. So, please save the date, Monday, December 21, 2015, 7:00 pm. Tell you family and friends that it s a Christmas event they won t want to miss...for the real meaning of Christmas.

KEEP THEM COMING Please continue to donate those complimentary Christmas cards and other greeting cards that you receive in the mail. In the past two weeks, you have donated 250 blank-inside note cards, 100 birthday cards, 500 religious Christmas cards, and 1,350 secular Christmas cards!! (I know, because I sorted them and bundled them!!) These will be distributed to a couple of prisons in Illinois to be given to the inmates to send. They are much appreciated, both by the prison staff and the inmates. Tell your family and friends, too, to save the cards they receive. I collect them all year long. Thank you very much for helping in this little ministry! Fr. Tom MONTINI CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS DECEMBER Meet Montini Montini Catholic High School will be hosting an evening Meet Montini on Tuesday, December 1 st. Montini Catholic High School is located at 19W070 16 th Street in Lombard. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Advent is a time rich in family traditions. Many of them have been so effectively absorbed into our culture that their religious origins are hidden. Some of us will set candles in our windows tonight. The custom began in Ireland during the so-called penal days, extending from 1691 to the Catholic Emancipation in 1829 and beyond. There were harsh penalties and fines for not attending the government church. Priests were forced into hiding, but people were resourceful and determined in guarding their faith. At Christmas, Irish families, particularly in the countryside, placed a lighted candle in the cottage window and left the door unlatched, hoping that a priest might come by and celebrate the Christmas Mass for them. The possibility of the Mass coming into the family home gave rise to other Irish customs at the beginning of Advent. The cottage received a fresh coat of whitewash, the threshold was swept especially clean, and fresh curtains were hung in the windows. The house was scrubbed until it gleamed, including all the pots and pans, and all garments and table linens were laundered. The custom of the Irish window candle was so admired in Catholic Europe that it was widely copied there, and now finds a welcome in households that may not exactly expect a priest to wander in! Rev.
