1 THE CROWN

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR By now, most trees and decorations are down, and Christmas is an almost forgotten memory, but I am still grateful for two special gifts I received. First, the weather on Christmas was very mild. If we do not have a snowstorm on Christmas, I am very grateful. As a child, this worried me because I did not know how Santa Claus could land his sleigh without snow. My dad explained to me that Santa's sleigh could also do vertical take-offs and landings just like a helicopter. My dad always pronounced it heel-e-o-copter. I am always happy when we do not have to plow and shovel on Christmas. The second gift was that Christmas was on Sunday. This makes the week of Christmas so much more relaxed. This year, however, will be pretty rough because Christmas will be on a Monday. That means that the 24th will be the Fourth Sunday of Advent with Masses at 7:30, 9:30, and 11:30, and then at 4:00pm and 11:00pm we will have Christmas Masses, and on the 25th we will do it all again. It is like having two Sundays in a row. At least we have almost an entire year to get used to the fact that there will be a lot of Church in just two days, but before that there is much to look forward to in the coming year. An ancient tradition in the Church is a little rite called the Epiphany Proclamation. On the Solemnity of the Epiphany, a deacon would stand before the people and chant the calendar. This chant listed all the important liturgical days in the coming year. Using Easter as the starting point, every date was figured from there -- Ash Wednesday, Ascension, Pentecost, the first Sunday of Advent -- and proclaimed to the people. Obviously, this rite is seldom celebrated today, and even though I am a week late, here is a brief version of the Epiphany Proclamation to remind us of some important dates and events in the coming year. The Sacred Paschal Triduum begins with the celebration of the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, 13 April, and continues through Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday, the 14th, 15th, and 16th respectively. This means that Ash Wednesday is the first day of March. Incidentally, this year both the Gregorian calendar Easter and Julian calendar Pascha are celebrated on the 16th. The seventh day of September marks the 68th anniversary of the opening of Divine Infant Jesus School. We will both celebrate and support our school with our annual School Raffle Party on Saturday 29 April. Tickets will be available at both the school and rectory offices. Please support the great ministry of Catholic education that our school has been doing for the better part of a century. Speaking of school, Catholic Schools Week begins Sunday 29 January. The week will be filled with fun activities for the school and parish including, but not limited to, a pancake breakfast on the 29th to get the week off to a tasty start. On Sunday 26 February, Bishop John Manz will come to Divine Infant to celebrate the 11:30am Mass and to administer the sacrament of Confirmation to our Religious Education and School eighth grade class. First Holy Communion for our Religious Education and School second graders will be Saturday 06 May. Divine Infant Jesus School will celebrate graduation for our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and eighth grade classes during the first week of June, and the last day of school -- snow days notwithstanding -- is Thursday 08 June. By then it will be summer -- thank you, Lord -- and we will be done with cold and snow for a few months! Of course, the most important day of the year comes once a week. Every Sunday we gather as God's holy people, the Church, to celebrate our identity. Every Sunday we celebrate Mass, and every Mass is the celebration of Christ's saving work. In every Mass, we celebrate the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption. In other words, every Sunday Mass is Christmas and the Sacred Paschal Triduum all rolled into one. So this year, make every Sunday the most important day of the year. Come to Mass and celebrate Christ's inexhaustible gift of love and salvation. By living, dying and rising, Christ made every Sunday the most important day of the year, and so should we. Fr. Michael

3 CALLING ALL 1ST GRADERS To Join DI Children s Choir The Divine Infant Children s Choir is welcoming 1 st graders to join the group of 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th graders as they prepare for the Lent and Easter seasons. Next rehearsal is Sunday, January 22, at 8:30 am in the music room of DI School. All rehearsals are Sundays at this time except when the children are scheduled to sing at mass or there is a special event. For more information or to let us know your 1 st grade child is planning to join us, please Mrs. Janet Reif, DI Music Director, at jreif@me.com or call and leave a message with your child s name and your phone number or address ( preferred). Note: We will happily welcome newcomers from grades 2-4 into our group at this time, too! Here s the schedule through January: ORDINARY TIME: A TIME FOR GROWTH Ordinary Time begins after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this time though we do not celebrate a particular liturgical season such as Advent or Christmas, we celebrate the mystery of Christ present in our every day lives. Just as we return to our regular daily routine, the Church returns to tempus ordinarium or measured time. Liturgically, Ordinary Time celebrates the Pascal Mystery in our earthly lives and so the vestments are green, the color of new growth. The focus is on Sunday as the First Day, the Day of the Lord, the day of the Resurrection. Each Sunday, then is a weekly Easter. At Mass we grow in our faith as we gather to listen to the Word and celebrate the Eucharist. We the Church are united with Christ the Head through the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise of eternal life through the final coming of Christ in glory makes each Sunday a true feast. There is nothing ordinary about it. Dr. Claudia Maria Dado, M.A.L. It is held at this time in remembrance of the infamous Roe v. Wade Decision legalizing abortion in our country. We will pray for a change in the minds and hearts of those involved in abortion. Please join us.

4 WHY JOIN THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS? Imagine being part of an organization that fills your heart and your mind with the joy of giving to others and the feeling that comes with making a difference. Knights are Catholic men, 18yrs of age and older, who are committed to making their community a better place while supporting their Parish. Being a Knight is more than camaraderie: it is being involved with your community and supporting Divine Infant Parish while enhancing your own faith and protecting and enhancing your family life. We need a few more men to join us as we begin a brand new council here at Divine Infant. Contact Deacon Jim or Father Michael if you re interested in becoming a member of the most significant men s Catholic organization in the Church today. You can also visit our website at for more general information. We will have an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 31, at 7 p.m. at the Rectory. Please join us! PLANNING MEETING FATHER DAUGTHER DANCE Anyone interested in helping plan the father daughter dance, feel free to attend a planning meeting on Monday, January 16th at 7 pm in Langan Hall. If you are unable to attend the meeting and still would like to help, please contact Genny Panek - gdpanek@comcast.net Thanks! THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the "servant songs" from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus' ministry of service. Isaiah's mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be "a light to the nations" (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul's letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today's Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus "outranks" John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John's baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright (c) J. S.
