The collapsed society had three basic divisions: those who work, those who fight, and those who pray. There wasn't a great deal of movement among the ranks, yet one way to move out of the workers and the fighters was in the direction of the folks who prayed. These were the First Estate, the clergy. One of the key persons in any manor or village was the priest. He could read, at least a bit, and so was the source for pronouncements and news from government and Church. He was assigned to celebrate the sacraments frequently and in conformance with certain rules. Seminaries did not exist before the Reformation. Astute Protestant reformers then forced the Catholic world toward a more educated and able clergy. Before that, young men apprenticed with a priest to learn the essentials, and would be presented to the bishop for ordination. Other priests emerged from the university system, where students were required to be invested as clerics. Still others were monks, ordained not so much for ministry outside the monastic walls, but to offer Mass only for the intentions of the community's benefactors. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Three Sunday, July 17, 2016 A NOTE FROM FR. NORM This coming week, as all of you know, Cleveland hosts the Republican National Convention. In a couple of weeks the Democratic National Convention will be held in Philadelphia. Our American bishops in their document Faithful Citizenship call us to engage in the political process grounded in our Catholic Christian values as followers of Jesus Christ. Our faith should be a primary influence upon all of our attitudes, decisions, and actions. We need to be guided by the values of reverence for all life, respect for the dignity of every person, the desire to overcome all forms of prejudice, the strengthening of family life, commitment to the common good, concern for immigrants, the poor and all who are hurting, and care for our environment. Especially this year we are called to encourage by example the ability for people of differing viewpoints to seek to understand one another, to be open to learning from another s perspective, to hold strong convictions without developing a self-righteous attitude. A phrase that has guided me: Though we may not see eye to eye, can we relate heart-toheart? On a regular basis we can prayerfully reflect in the midst of any disagreement am I becoming too ego centered, wanting to win the argument, hoping to have the final say, desiring to prove how right I am? WEDDING BANNS II Patrick Gill & Amanda Lorkowski III Patrick Tehan & Melissa Coniglio FAMILY PERSPECTIVES The familiar story of Martha and Mary serves as a reminder for us to choose the better portion with our families. Are we too busy to really be present to each other? Give the gift of time and attention to spouse, children, parents and siblings. Truly listen to them and do what they enjoy doing. Only if we devote time to our children, speaking of important things with simpliity and concern, and finding healthy ways for them to spend their time, will we be able to shield them from harm. Pope Francis, The Joy of Love#260 MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP If you are entering sixth, seventh, or eighth grade, we welcome you to the Saint Vincent de Paul Youth Group!
