That is natural, of course, and it can be a great way to fi nd lasting friendships. But God also wants us to be around people who are not like us and he wants us to see our differences as a good thing. In Corinth, men and women were in worship together for the fi rst time. Men and women are different, of course, and God created them that way. But our scripture tells us that their differences are to be celebrated together. Take a moment while you are in worship today to look around and see the different people around you. Celebrate what makes you different, and remember what makes you the same your faith in Jesus. Soul Food: A Word from Peter Short Sighted And every women who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head - 1 Corinthians 11:5 Many years ago I spent a summer in the Philippines serving as a missionary. I travelled around the islands, preaching in remote villages. After a week or two, I realized that people weren t listening to me. They seemed distant and distracted. I wondered: was something wrong with my preaching? Finally, my host took me aside and explained: It s because you are wearing shorts. In the Philippines, men never expose their legs by wearing shorts. Immediately, I began wearing long pants. The difference was amazing! Suddenly, people seemed friendly and attentive. It had nothing to do with my message it had everything to do with the shorts! In our scripture this morning, Paul says that women should cover their heads during worship. It wasn t a moral absolute or a command of God. Rather, Paul was trying to be sensitive to the culture in Corinth. In that culture, women who did not cover their heads were considered to be prostitutes or sexually immoral. As Christians, we need to be sensitive to our culture. Otherwise, we create a barrier that prevents people from hearing our message. Notes: _ Audio/Media Crew Needed We are currently seeking individuals who would like to join the LPC Audio/ Media Crew for the 11:15 a.m. service. If you are interested, please contact Rick McNeely at rick@lebanonpresbyterian.org. Jesse the Juggler Come join us for a special LPC family event on Wednesday, September 5. Jesse Joyner, a renowned Christian performer from Richmond, VA, will be here at 6:30 p.m. to share the gospel through his gifts of juggling and storytelling. We will also have a Kona Ice truck with treats to enjoy beforehand! Bring your kids, your friends, and yourselves for a meaningful message, fun, and fellowship! LPC Book Club Our fi rst book club of the Fall will be Thursday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in Room 311. Our September book is called Rainwater by Sandra Brown. Ella Barron, a single Texas mother, built a careful life running a boarding house in the Depression-era cotton South. But when a mysterious stranger takes a free room, he also takes Ella s careful life apart. In the tradition of Gone With the Wind comes historical romance in the Dust Bowl. Please join us and if you have any questions, contact Kristen Hodges at thehodgeys@yahoo.com.
