s h a r i n g t h e h o p e o f J e s u s CHANGING THE WORLD, STARTING WITH OUR COMMUNITY, ONE HEART AT A TIME August 2015 page 2 calendar page 3 summer activities THE PASTOR SHARES I have noticed that I often place limits on what is possible. Those limits come from several realities in my life. My past experience (I have traveled this road before); my personal limitations; the experiences of others; and the fact that a better or different outcome seems impossible. When we have repeated experiences of the same behavior it causes us to expect the same outcome. I have spoken with family members of drug and alcohol abusers. They have heard the same promises over and over. This time I am really going to quit. They have watched them detox so many times. They have spent large amounts of money on treatment centers. Eventually the expectation of change begins to diminish and finally disappear. Our hearts take on the inevitability that some things, some people, some circumstances never change. I understand why we place limits on what is possible, but I need to understand God does not place those same limits. I have been studying in Luke s gospel. In chapter 1 the angel of the Lord comes to tell Mary the Holy Spirit would come on her and she would have a child, not just any child, the messiah! Mary hears the announcement like most of us would. How will this be? Mary asks the angel, Since I am a virgin? (Luke 1:34 NIV) Good question! Notice the response in verse 37 For nothing is impossible with God. Fred Craddock in his commentary on this verse points out in verse 37 the angel recalls the creed behind all creeds, the very words spoken long ago to Abraham and Sarah when they doubted they were to have a child. For with God nothing will be impossible (Genesis 18:14) page 4 for your information page 5 growing in christ children s ministry page 6 WCA page 7 ministry updates back page this month at wc We hear the creed again in Matthew 17:20 only it expands the thought. Jesus shares that if we have the faith of a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, Move from here to there; and it will move. Nothing will be impossible to you. Not only is nothing impossible for God (theologically we can probably accept that), but Jesus says nothing is impossible for us. The implication is through the power of God working in us. I think the Bible is trying to encourage us to have a little faith, just a little faith, in a God who does the impossible. When is the last time you invited God to do the impossible in your life? You are Loved, Pastor Steve
