A word from the St. Ambrose Health and Wellness Committee: Men--what do you need to know about breast cancer? If you see a change in your breast or feel any lump, no matter how small, contact your health care provider immediately! Although men are at low risk for developing breast cancer, when there is any change in your breast tissue (yes, men have breast tissue, a very small amount, but you do have some) quick attention to any changes will save your life. Some information about male breast cancer: Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men Death rates of male breast cancer have decreased to 1.8% per year since 2000. Which men are at risk? Family history of one or more male or female first degree (mother, father, sister, brother) family member who has had breast or ovarian cancer is at high risk, family members with BRCA gene mutation, testicular disorders and obesity. Ages is a risk factor- 65 and older, risk increases across lifespan until age 80. Radiation exposure Men, what can you do for the women in your lives? Encourage the women you love your wife, mother, sister, daughter, niece and female friends to have routine mammograms according to the following guidelines: Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health Clinical breast exam (CBE) performed by a health care provider about every 3 years for women in their 20s and 30s and every year for women 40 and over Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast change promptly to their health care provider. Breast self-exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their 20s. S Some women because of their family history, a genetic tendency, or certain other factors should be screened with MRI in addition to mammograms. (The number of women who fall into this category is small: less than 2% of all the women in the US.) Talk with your doctor about your history and whether you should have additional tests at an earlier age. More than 2.9 million US women have a history of breast cancer are alive as of January 2013. Some of these women are cancer free are, while others still had evidence of cancer and may have been undergoing treatment. Medicare provides coverage for screening mammography to facilitate the early detection of breast cancer for women with no signs or symptoms of disease. The screening mammography is a Medicare Part B benefit with no co-pay or co-insurance or deductible. Medicare does provide coverage for diagnostic mammography (for a lump or change in breast tissue) for men and women who meet certain coverage criteria. There is no co-pay/co-insurance or deductible for this screening benefit. Submitted by Maryann Coletti, RN Health and Wellness Committee Information source: American Cancer Society

The St. Ambrose Social Justice Committee would like to remind you that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please join us on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 10 a.m. in the Church Hall We are hosting a presentation from the St. Louis Circuit Attorney s Office concerning the issues related to family violence. Violence against family members has long been a widespread but little known epidemic affecting local, national and international communities alike. Police officers in our area report that domestic violence is on the rise in our community. There are many things that YOU can do to help raise awareness about child abuse, domestic violence, and violence against women in general. Here are some ideas: 1) Participate in an event in your area during Domestic Violence Month. 2) Write to your Mayor and Governor and ask them to join other leaders across the nation in declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month If your town or state has already declared a proclamation, let your local newspaper know about it and why dating violence awareness and preventing domestic violence is important. 3) Wear a purple ribbon (the official color of domestic violence awareness) or a heart on your sleeve or participate in the Purple Light Nights campaign and shine a purple light on your porch during October, and when people ask you about it, let them know why domestic violence awareness and dating abuse awareness are important to you. Find out more: *Break the Cycle: BreakTheCycle.org * Dating Abuse Stops Here: DatingAbuseStopsHere.org * Give Respect (Family Violence Prevention Fund): GiveRespect.org * Love Is Not Abuse: LoveIsNotAbuse.com * National Domestic Violence Hotline: ndvh.org * National Online Resource Center on Violence against Women: vawnet.org * National Resource Center on Domestic Violence: nrcdv.org * Purple Light Nights: purplelightnights.org Everyone is invited!
