May each day of the New Year bring you faith, joy, happiness, and prosperity. As the first half of the Fraternal Year is coming to an end, the council should be very proud of our accomplishments. The Brothers, Ladies and family members were very involved in numerous St. Genevieve Parish events and fundraisers. I would like to thank all Brothers, Ladies Auxiliary and family members for all their help and support these first six months. You are the best: let s close out the next six months with a bang! To show our Christmas Spirit, our council held the annual Light up for Christ and hosted a St Genevieve Community Posada. Thank you to our Ladies Auxiliary for hosting the receptions for Light up for Christ. A special thanks to everyone who brought something for the potluck: Brother Ruben Salcido for helping place the luminaries and Brother Jaime Flores for setting up the piñata for the Posadas. These events were well attended and filled with a lot of spirit. As the saying goes, Jesus is the reason for the season. Thank you the Brothers who have recruited a new Brother this half of the Fraternal Year. Our goal is to recruit at least four new Brothers by the end of March or April. If you know of a prospective member please contact Brother Robert Ponzini or me. Light Up For Christ Tuesday, December 4th: The Light up for Christ ceremony is a key part of the Knights of Columbus campaign to Keep Christ in Christmas. All Knights of Columbus councils nationally are encouraged to host a prayerful ceremony on every first Tuesday evening of December to remind the community that Christmas is above all a Holy Day celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Once again, St. Genevieve Council 13969 held a Light up for Christ ceremony on Tuesday December 4 th to properly start the Christmas Season. It seems that every year the crowd gets a little larger, and the music and singing gets a little better. This year we had perhaps the largest crowd ever, with over 75 present. As usual, the ceremony was planned and beautifully presented by St. Genevieve Deacon and Knights of Columbus Council Member Lou Roman. The music group was once again led by Brother Ruben and Lady Sylvia Corona, who were joined for the first time by Georgina Apodaca, the new music leader at the St. Genevieve 9:30 AM Sunday Mass. The singing was arguably the best it has ever been. Hopefully, some of the prayer and enjoyment is recaptured in the photos below. Hanging the wreath are GK Jose Preparation Crew: Sam Gonzales, Jose Tapia Coordinator Jaime Flores greets our Tapia, Ruben Salcido, and Jaime Flores Jaime Flores, Alberto Grijalva, Bob Ponzini Music Leaders Ruben & Sylvia Corona The Choir prepares: Sylvia Corona, Georgina Deacon Lou Roman read the opening The large crowd bundled up it was Apodaca, Ruben Corona & Delia Narvaez prayer at the beginning of the ceremony cold but calm and comfortable GK Jose Tapia welcomed everyone & The large crowd (over 75) sang the Deacon Lou Roman read the Gospel explained the meaning of Light up for Christ prelude Christian Christmas songs from Luke 1, verses 34-45. Family Unity Night St. Genevieve Posada Wednesday, December 19th: Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration with origins in Spain, and now celebrated chiefly in Mexico and in the Southwestern U.S. Posada is Spanish for inn, and celebrates the journey of St. Joseph and Mary to the stable where Christ was born. It is a re-enactment of Mary and Joseph s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. The Posada legacy includes special prayers and songs done in Spanish. Our previous pastor, Fr. Ricardo Bauza, was a lover of Las Posadas and instituted a weeklong celebration of nightly potluck dinners that were hosted by the various ministries at St. Genevieve s. This year, St Genevieve hosted two Posadas, one by the Youth Group and another by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus Posada was held as our regularly scheduled, third Wednesday of the month, Family Unity Night. We invited our priests, Monsignors Joseph Mukala and Juan Moreno, to lead us in prayer. The Ladies Auxiliary coordinated and served a potluck dinner, we had a piñata for the kids, and a group of about 70 parishioners participated. Traditionally, the people sing holy songs As the procession arrives from the Church, The group from the Church stands outside awaiting the arrival of Mary & Joseph the people move forward to meet them and recites the traditional prayers The procession with Mary and Joseph New Brother Joe Michael Navarro & Among the first to enter are Lady enters the parish hall Joshua Reyes carry Mary & Joseph Mary and Brother Lucio Tellez Brother Guy and Lady Carla Floyd arrive, Our priests participated, Monsignors Our Grand Knight, Jose Tapia, was part reciting the traditional Posada prayers Joseph Mukala & Juan Moreno of the procession from St. Genevieve Church The potluck dinner was planned & served by The St Genevieve Posada tradition always The children scramble for the candy the Ladies Auxiliary. Welcome to the newest Knights in our Council : Our Council can change a lot over a year! Shown below are the new members who have joined us over the past year. Please get to know these new members, and welcome them into our Brotherhood whenever you see them. Most of these new Brother Knights have already participated in at least one of our religious, social, or community activities. Many of our Knights are extremely busy, and have work and family responsibilities. But it only takes a few hours a month to participate in our fellowship. Our council is very active, and there is some activity of interest for everyone to participate. So let s follow the example of this group of one-year-old Knights and volunteer to participate this coming 2019 New Year! Just prior to Christmas, Grand Knight Jose Tapia and Brother Ruben Salcido placed artificially lighted candles on the walkway between old St. Joseph Cemetery and St. Genevieve Church. INSURANCE AGENT S MESSAGE Know that I carry you in my rosaries and other prayers as I travel the SW corner of NM serving your families. Please pray for my safety, and for my family as I work to serve you, my brothers and your families. Please plan now to visit with me in the coming year to make sure that you and your family will be ready, no matter what may come your way. May you be blessed by our Lord in this season of His birth, and into the New Year. Matthew Seltzer (575)936-7181 matthewseltzer.com Looking back at 2018 As I look back on 2018, I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve you as your brother, your friend, and your advisor. I m so thankful that Fr. McGivney had the inspiration and courage to start this Order: a brotherhood which assists and encourages men in becoming better men, better husbands, better fathers, and better Catholics while assuring the financial futures of our families through our unapologetically Catholic insurance company which protects us, keeps our values, and helps in the legendary charity work for which the Knights of Columbus are respected around the world! I m so pleased to serve on our degree teams, bringing my brothers to a deeper understanding of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism with a uniquely Catholic understanding. A Few of the Editor s Favorite Photos Taken at this Month s Council Activities Lady Sylvia helps Bro Ruben Corona at the LUFC Ceremony Delores Anaya helps a friend hold her candle at the LUFC I m so grateful for the opportunity to stand by so many of you and assist you in your time of need. Several of the funerals I assisted with this year were very personal one of my high school teachers; the departed Sir Knight whose Faithful Navigator sword I now carry; the beautiful mother of childhood friends; a brother Knight gone far too soon, just one year older than I am I could go on and on. It s an honor and a privilege to be there, keeping the same promise Fr. McGivney and the first Knights of Columbus made to each other in that church basement back in 1882. I m also grateful that many of you have taken the time to visit with me to prepare for your future, whatever it may hold. It s a pleasure to represent our company one that we don t have to apologize or make excuses for when evaluating our investment strategies and priorities as I assist my brothers and families in financial planning. It s so gratifying to bring peace of mind to my brothers and their families with the top-rated products our order offers.
