FAITH FORMATION SNAPSHOTS Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35 This past May we had a total of 19 students (10 Ascension and 9 St. Bernard) who received their Fist Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. This year marks our second class who has prepared for the sacraments through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program. The sacramental preparation is different than our traditional preparation, as the CGS model invites parents to prepare with their child and take in five separate mediation/teaching evenings and then attend a one day retreat along with their child, which also has their First Reconciliation celebration built into the day. Through all the parent preparation, we continue to encourage and uplift the parent s role as the first and primary educator of their child s faith. The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program lays a solid foundation of Catholic traditions, based on scripture, salvation history, Mass gestures, and the sacraments for parents to work from. As the children have gained many graces through the celebration of their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, we encourage all families to continue celebrating these sacraments as often as possible. What a special gift Jesus has given to all of us through the celebration of weekly Mass and opportunities to seek forgiveness and guidance through regular Reconciliation times offered throughout the year. Our parishes have been blessed with many parishioners who have been specially trained to teach in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atriums. This training is a huge commitment of time and requires a desire to dig deeper into one s own faith and be willing to share this with others. We currently have 5 fully trained catechists along with two other parishioners currently in training. God is good! A special thank you to Lisa Whitaker who has taken on the role as the student s primary sacramental preparation catechist within the Level II atrium and to Tamara Lemmer for leading the Level I program. Their willingness to take on extra leadership roles is greatly appreciated!! We continue to invite parents/parishioners to consider training to become a CGS catechist.
