TWO NEW OPORTUNITIES FOR ADULT BIBLE STUDY AND FAITH FORMATION HERE We here at Sacred Heart take ongoing adult faith formation very seriously. People are hungry to learn the Word of God from a deeply spiritual and authentically Catholic perspective. Well, we have two new Studies starting up, all are invited and welcome. One is Wednesday night at 6:15PM where we will study the prophetic literature of the Bible. The other is on Tuesday morning at 9:35AM (After the Tuesday 9AM Mass) where we will be going deep into Catholic Apologetics to see how best to help those who have fallen away from the practice of their Catholic faith. Two days and two times for different schedules; or come to both! Tuesday Morning at 9:35AM, Adult Faith Formation, in the school room 1, JUST STARTING, NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN: SEARCH AND RESCUE, APOLOGETICS HOW TO BRING YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS INTO OR BACK INTO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH If you are very concerned because someone near and dear has left the Church, or doesn t embrace the Catholic faith or refuses to consider entering it, a son, a daughter, a relative, a coworker, or a close friend, this study group is for you. Don t go it alone! This extensive college level course will (1) help you explain your Catholic faith more intelligently, (2) defend it more charitably, and (3) share it more effectively! We will study together an actual one semester course taught at a seminary using primarily 2 books, Search and Rescue by Patrick Madrid and Handbook of Catholic Apologetics by Kreeft and Tacelli. Come to our first meeting right after the 9AM Mass on Tuesday, January 23 in the school. If you can t attend and would like to take the class, if there are enough interested, we can also meet in an evening or other time. Deacon Rowley will guide the discussions and provide the course syllabus and some of the materials. Please call or text Deacon Rowley if you are interested, 575-760-1372. Wednesday Night at 6:15PM, Adult Bible Study, in the school, room 1. Just starting; NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN! If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as spiritual marriage counselors. They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom. Join our Parish for this Great Adventure study on the prophets, presented by Thomas Smith! Each week, you will come to know a prophet from Scripture and learn how his message sheds light on our faith and our lives. In getting to know these messengers of God, you will read Scripture and the Catechism, while answering thought-provoking questions and powerful reflections. Plus, you will learn practical ways to apply the messages of the prophets in your own life. A study on the prophets has been one of the most requested programs from The Great Adventure. The Prophets: Messengers of God s Mercy places the Old Testament prophets in context of salvation history, making their personalities and contexts easy to follow, understand, and relate to our lives. We here at Sacred Heart will begin The Prophets: Messengers of God s Mercy on January 10th at 6:15PM, in the school, room 1. For more information or to register for the study come on Wednesday night or call the parish office. You will find it enriching and inspirational!

We will be having our 2nd Annual Valentine s Day Dinner and Dance on February 9th at the Knights of Columbus Hall (2830 E. 21st St.). The Dinner is from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. The Dance will begin directly after Dinner at 8:30PM and will last until Midnight. Vamos a celebrar tres Misas para el Miércoles de Ceniza. Tenemos una Misa a las 6:45AM y otra a las 12:10PM y a las 5:30PM en español. Sepas que eres polvo y al polvo volverás. Génesis 3:19 Dinner will include: Your choice of Chicken Breast or Brisket, a Vegetable Medley, Mashed Potatoes, a Roll, Salad, Beverage and Dessert. You can purchase your tickets from the Church office or from a youth group student. Tickets are $40 for a couple. Child care will be provided for $10 a family. Your children will be in a separate room where they can enjoy movies, crafts, and games. Each child will receive pizza, chips, and a drink. There will be door prizes and a silent auction. *Please purchase your tickets before Monday, February 5th; limited seating is available.* ASH WEDNESDAY MASS SCHEDULE: Feb 14th. We will be having three Masses to celebrate Ash Wednesday. The first two Masses will be in English at 6:45AM and 12:10PM, the third in Spanish at 5:30PM. Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return. Cf. Genesis 3:19

The Beauty of God Reflected in Nature Lake Baikal Lake Baikal is a freshwater lake located in Russian, in the southern part of Siberia. What makes Lake Baikal unique you may ask? Many, many things for that matter. Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world. It is so large that Europeans in the 1600s referred to it as a sea. There are larger lakes in the world by surface area but not by volume. It actually contains approximately 23% of the world s fresh surface water (that s nearly a quarter)! It is also the world s deepest lake at 5,387 ft. at its deepest; that s well over a mile deep. Although the lake itself is similar in size to Lake Michigan, it contains more water than all of our Great Lakes combined due to its astounding depth. Interestingly enough, there is another 4 miles of sediment above the actual bottom of the lake. This sediment is a result of Lake Baikal also having the distinction of being recognized as the oldest lake in the world (between 25-30 million years old). Lake Baikal is so ancient that there are records of wars being fought on its shores by two Chinese factions between 133 BC to 89 AD. According to the World Wildlife Foundation, there are over 2,500 animal species living in and around Lake Baikal, 2/3 of them cannot be found anywhere else in the world! About 330 rivers flow into Lake Baikal but only one flows out. To add to its many accolades, Lake Baikal is also considered the second clearest lake in the world. So clear that one can see a little over 130 feet into the lake! Lake Baikal is one of the most unique treasures on planet Earth. From its picturesque beauty to its many accolades, mankind has been enjoying Lake Baikal since before our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ walked the Earth! From the creation, learn to admire the Lord! Indeed the magnitude and beauty of creation display a God who is the artificer of the universe. He has made the mode of creation to be our best teacher. St. John Chrysostom (347-407)
