St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, October 7, 2018 We priests of the diocese of Cleveland gather for a four-day convocation every other year. We are meeting this coming Tuesday through Friday (October 9-12). We come together for prayer, fellowship, reflection, and a deepening of our Catholic Christian spirituality as servant leaders. We will prayerfully discern ways we can best serve the diocese of Cleveland going into the future. This will be our first convocation with Bishop Nelson Perez. He has shown himself to be an inspirational and effective leader of our diocese. Because all priests of the diocese, including those retired, are invited to participate, we will not celebrate the 6:30 a.m. Mass on October 10-12. There will be no school Mass on Friday, October 12. The Bishop has recommended that if a parish has a Deacon he can facilitate Communion services in their place. We are richly blessed to have Deacon Bob Bender serving our parish. He will lead Liturgy of the Word and Communion Services at 6:30 a.m. on October 10-12. Communion consecrated from previous Masses will be distributed. There will not be a Communion service in place of the school Mass on Friday. Please pray for us priests, for Bishop Perez, and for our diocesan community this coming week. I am deeply grateful to have you as my parish family, being a rich source of spiritual support for me. Father Dave Halaiko, our retired priest in residence, will also be at the convocation. He has been a wonderful blessing for me personally and for our parish. Please keep in prayer those who have recently passed away. Ann Rauh Liz Garritano BLANKET SUNDAY Monetary donations only Next weekend is Blanket Sunday, sponsored by the Diocesan St. Vincent de Paul Society. When you make a donation, your money will go even further through bulk purchases of blankets and other items for the homeless and poor individuals in our own metropolitan area. You may also donate online at www.svdpcle.org. THANK YOU Thank you for your generosity to last week s collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Your support will help the CCC connect millions of people with Christ and spread the gospel message. If you missed the collection, it s not too late to give! Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections, and click on the How to Give link on the left. 2019 MASS INTENTIONS We will begin scheduling Mass intentions for 2019 on Tuesday, October 16. Maximum 2 weekends/ holidays per family per year. Additional Mass intentions can be scheduled for the 6:30 a.m. weekday Masses and 9 a.m. Friday school Masses. Call or stop by the rectory office during regular office hours, M-F, 8:30 am - 3 p.m. CELEBRATING THE SAINTHOOD OF ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO OF EL SALVADOR Blessed Oscar Romero of El Salvador is being canonized a saint on October 14th. An advocate of human rights for the poor and exploited people of his home country, he suffered martyrdom in 1980 as a result. To honor this great man who is especially revered by those who seek social justice from a Catholic perspective, I am going to present a two-part series to coincide with his canonization. Part One: Sunday, October 7, 6:30 p.m., Scullen Room - Background information on El Salvador to set Archbishop Romero s life in a useful context. The session will last approximately 90 minutes. Part Two: Sunday, October 14, 6:30 p.m., Scullen Room - Viewing the full-length feature film Romero, produced by the Paulist Fathers and released initially in 1989, approx. 100 minutes. I have seen it more than a dozen times and it still touches me deeply. It does portray some violence so it may not be suitable for young children. It is not necessary to attend the first session to view the movie, though I recommend it.... Dᴇᴀᴄᴏɴ Bᴏʙ
