18 MAY (Wednesday): POPE JOHN I (d. 526) The 53rd pope, who conflicted against Theodoric the Goth, ruler of Italy at the time. Theodoric was an Arian who late in life became suspicious of everyone, imagining conspiracies and attempts to seize his throne. When he attempted to involve Pope John in his politics, the pope travelled to Constantinople to negotiate with Emperor Justin I. Theodoric had John kidnapped and imprisoned upon his return to Rome, and the pope died while in custody. 19 MAY (Thursday): SAINT CRISPIN OF VITERBO, Religious (1668-1750) A Franciscan lay brother, Crispin s simple, humble holiness brought many local lay people to him for spiritual guidance. As word of his wisdom spread, his visitors became priests, bishops, then cardinals, and even a pope. Crispin was noted for paying little attention to the rank or status of a visitor, either high or low, but concentrating on talking to them all as equal children of the same God. Saints and Observances 20 MAY (Friday): SAINT BERNARDINE OF SIENA, Priest (1380-1444) Bernardino s charismatic preaching filled the piazze of Italian cities. Thousands of listeners flocked to hear him and to participate in dramatic rituals, which included collective weeping, bonfires of vanities, and exorcisms. He was a renowned peacemaker, in the Franciscan tradition, who tried to calm feuding clans and factions in the turbulent political world of the Renaissance. SOLEMNITY, FEAST, MEMORIAL OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OTHER When anyone reposes all his confidence in God, God continually exercises a special protection over him, and in this state of things he can be assured that no evil will happen to him. -- St. Vincent de Paul Ministry and Group News WOMEN S SCRIPTURE STUDY GROUP Women s Catholic Scripture Study of San Mateo County invites you to join us in our upcoming study, In the Beginning, the Book of Genesis. THE HOLY FATHER S PRAYER INTENTIONS From the Holy See Each month His Holiness asks for general and missionary prayer intentions. For May 2016, the Holy Father s prayer intentions are: Universal: Respect for Women That in every country of the world, women may be honored and respected and that their essential contribution to society may be highly esteemed. Missionary: The Holy Rosary That families, communities, and groups may pray the Holy Rosary for evangelization and peace.. www.im.va Calendar of Novenae 15 MAY (SUN) Feast of Pentecost THIRD Day: Holy Trinity 16 MAY (MON) FOURTH Day: Holy Trinity 17 MAY (TUE) FIFTH Day: Holy Trinity 18 MAY (WED) SIXTH Day: Holy Trinity 19 MAY (THU) SEVENTH Day: Holy Trinity 20 MAY (FRI) EIGHTH Day: Holy Trinity FIRST Day: Corpus Christi 21 MAY () NINTH Day: Holy Trinity SECOND Day: Corpus Christi 22 MAY (SUN) Feast of the Holy Trinity THIRD Day: Corpus Christi 23 MAY (MON) FOURTH Day: Corpus Christi 24 MAY (TUE) FIFTH Day: Corpus Christi 25 MAY (WED) SIXTH Day: Corpus Christi FIRST Day: Sacred Heart of Jesus 26 MAY (THU) SEVENTH Day: Corpus Christi SECOND Day: Sacred Heart of Jesus 27 MAY (FRI) EIGHTH Day: Corpus Christi THIRD Day: Sacred Heart of Jesus 28 MAY () NINTH Day: Corpus Christi FOURTH Day: Sacred Heart of Jesus FIND THE NOVENA PRAYERS Novena to the Holy Trinity: http://taigivision.com/trinitarians/devotions/holy_trinity.html Novena to the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi): https://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/novena/corpus_christi.htm Novena to the Sacred Heart: https://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/heart/sh_novena.htm NATIVITY FEEDS: A VOICE FOR OTHERS Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love advises Mother Teresa. That is what happened last year at Nativity Parish and School. Alexander and Luke Edward Harding Bradley (Nativity cantors) started an initiative called Nativity Feeds. The money you donated provided lunch for school children in a very poor area of Tanzania (Sanya Station), West Africa. Alexander visited there last year (and Luke Edward hopes to go this year). Alexander delivered Nativity s donation, met the students, saw where the food is cooked, bought and labelled new dishes, and worked with the students and their teachers for a few weeks. Thanks to the generosity of friends and parishioners at Nativity, 450 children have had a lunch of rice and beans every single day, since June 2015 - they have not had this regularity in meals before. When you step up to help others, you become a voice for and with others, especially those hungry and in pain. We want to use our voices to continue this feeding program. Monsignor Otellini has given Alexander and Luke Edward permission to speak, sing the meditation The Voice, to remind us that we can be a voice for and with others. There will be a collection at all the Nativity Masses on Pentecost (14-15 MAY 2016). Every single dollar raised during this project goes directly towards the nourishment of the students at this school. We have no expectation that our voices will resolve great things such as the extensive problem of hungry children, but we want to follow Mother Teresa s advice of doing small things with great love. We humbly ask for your support. Alexander and Luke Edward
