Saint Martin of Tours People Ministering to People Roman Catholic Church and School Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s Mercy and Love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. The Holy Family of jesus, mary and Joseph December 30, 2018 A Reflection WHAT TRULY A FAMILY IS ABOUT! Dear Friends, Today is the Feast of the Holy Family. Family is not about what we have in our life, but who we have in our life. The transition from what we have to who we have makes great families. There is a story about two Americans answered an invitation from the Russian Department of Education to teach morals and ethics (based on biblical principles). They were invited to teach at prisons and a large orphanage. About 100 boys and girls who had been abandoned, abused, and left in the care of a government-run program were in the orphanage. They relate the following story in their own words: We told them about Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem. Finding no room in the inn, the couple went to a stable, where the baby Jesus was born and placed in a manger. Throughout the story, the children sat in amazement as they listened trying to grasp every word. Completing the story, we gave the children three small pieces of cardboard to make a crude manger. Following instructions, the children tore the paper and carefully laid strips in the manger for straw. Small squares of flannel were used for the baby's blanket. The orphans were busy assembling their manger as I walked among them to see if they needed any help. All went well until I got to one table where little Misha sat. He looked to be about 6-years-old and had finished his project. As I looked at the little boy's manger, I was startled to see not one, but two babies in the manger. Quickly, I called for the translator to ask the lad why there were two babies in the manger. Crossing his arms in front of him and looking at this completed manger scene, the child began to repeat the story very seriously. For such a young boy, who had only heard the Christmas story once, he related the happenings accurately -- until he came to the part where Mary put the baby Jesus in the manger. Then Misha started to ad-lib. He made up his own ending to the story as he said, And when Mary laid the baby in the manger, Jesus looked at me and asked me if I had a place to stay. I told him I have no mamma and I have no papa, so I don't have any place to stay. Then Jesus told me I could stay with Him. But I told him I couldn't, because I didn't have a gift to give Him like everybody else did. But I wanted to stay with Jesus so much, so I thought about what I had that maybe I could use for a gift. I thought maybe if I kept Him warm, that would be a good gift. So I asked Jesus, 'If I keep You warm, will that be a good enough gift?' And Jesus told me, 'If you keep Me warm, that will be the best gift anybody ever gave Me.' So I got into the manger, and then Jesus looked at me and He told me I could stay with Him -- for always. As little Misha finished his story, his eyes brimmed full of tears that splashed down his little cheeks. Putting his hand over his face, his head dropped to the table and his shoulders shook as he sobbed and sobbed. The little orphan had found someone who would never abandon nor abuse him, someone who would stay with him -- for always. Family is not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life. We all should give thanks for the people that "keep us"- in their lives. This week, be a family to someone. ~Fr. The Food Box program extends our thanks to the hundreds of supporters who helped make the Food Box successful in 2018. This includes volunteers and donors alike. We served over 2100 individuals in 2018, providing healthier foods and lots of fresh produce. In our new client choice model, we provided personal 1:1 support and friendly fellowship to each client, with more personal interactions between our volunteers and the clients. This has been our biggest and best year of distributions yet, and we hope to help even more of our food-insecure neighbors in 2019. If you haven't yet visited our Food Box program, we encourage you to add it to your calendar for 2019. We distribute food every 3rd Friday in the Gym at 6pm-8pm, and we welcome volunteers of all ages. What a wonderful New Years resolution, to give back and volunteer in our community! We hope to see you soon-- and thanks again to everyone who supported the Food Box this year. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Have you ever considered becoming Catholic? Faith Formation Corner This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of the Holy Family and it is also the last Sunday of the year. For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to reflect on how we have loved and grown with our family this past year. To begin, I invite us to reflect on the Holy Family. How do we see their relationship? Do their interactions teach us anything about love, communication and/or holiness? As we read and heard in the Gospel, Jesus acted as many 12-13 year olds do. Jesus acted in a way that resulted in his parents having great anxiety. After Mary and Joseph find Jesus, we read that they said to him rather than they yelled at him. When Jesus responds we read that he said to them rather than he yelled back. What might this teach us about love and communication within a family? What we find in the Holy Family is not necessarily absolute perfection. What we find is absolute love and holiness. With love we can communicate more patiently. With love we can grow through our misunderstandings and miscommunications to become holy. Holiness may be something that seems out of our reach, but as children of God we are all already sacred before God. As we prepare to conclude this year, let us each reflect on how God invites each of us to live and love within our families. Let us also ask God for the love and grace to grow more loving, to communicate that love and to grow into our own version of a holy family.
