Saint Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church and School Community Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s mercy and love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. Fourth Sunday of Easter April 15 2018 Pastor s Note Village House Our faith is not just the number of things that we believe in or the number of prayers we say, or the number of sacraments we receive. Our faith is more, or should be more than that. Our faith should be a faith that is alive and that gives life to others. Our faith should be action. That is why the work of mercy is so important because what we believe is reflected in the things we do. The message of Jesus is clear. His gospel is to serve especially those who cannot repent and is perfectly expressed by the prophet: The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. (Isaiah 61:1). The Village House work is precisely this. It gives to some people in need a message of hope, and in doing so we make God present in our midst. Some people may ask how the little that we can do will change the situation of the society in which we live? What we do is so little to make an impact. And you might be right it is little but can make an impact on those few we serve and on the ones who serve. It can be little but still make a change. Since the beginning, the Christian communities were dedicatd to serve and spoor the act of Charities. Paul in some of his letters asked the communities and encouraged them to Remember the poor: They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do. (Galatians 2:10) What I am asking you to do is to help the Village House to host those in need. To give them more than bread and a place to sleep, but to show love and kindness and the face of God. "There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty -- it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is April 14 April 21 Saturday 5:00 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners Sunday 7:00 Jessica Catral Monday 8:30 Louis Mello 10:00 Ronald Sieben 11:30 Dorthy Erickson White 8:00 Marion Borgett Tuesday 8:00 Karl Mauritz & Rock Dessa Wednesday 8:00 Right to Life Thursday 8:00 Sophia Evans & Justin Semana Friday 8:00 Soul of Bernard Cababing Saturday 8:00 6:00 Mary Mummau Francisca Daniel & Daniel Selva a hunger for God. (Mother Teresa). All of us who have received more, have the responsibility to give more to give our time, our love, and to use the gift given to us to serve with kindness. I encourage all of St. Martin community -- children, adults, elderly everyone should be involved. While other ministries can be set aside because you may believe you don t have the gift to be a lector or a Eucharistic minister, this one cannot. We are called to serve those in need. -Fr. Sergio St. Vincent De Paul Society is a lay ministry that reaches out to those in need both spiritually and financially. The society has been part of the parish since its inception. This is a ministry that is flexible and can fit in with your busy schedule. We meet on the 3 rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Bailey house. For more information 408-439-

Our Food Box model will be slightly changing in the future, to a "Wellness Pantry." This will enable us to provide more fresh produce and dairy items, and an overall healthier menu of items. For example, we will switch from white rice to brown rice, regular pasta to whole-grain pasta, and whole-grain cereals only. Second Harvest will provide us with a larger amount of fresh produce, so we will be moving away from canned vegetables and fruits. We will be sharing more information in the coming weeks on items that would fit in well with our healthier pantry. Meanwhile, we appreciate your donations of canned tuna and beans, peanut butter, and whole-grain food. Thank you for your generosity! Please "like" St. Martin of Tours Facebook page! You can find it at www.facebook.com/stmartinoftourssj When you follow our page, you'll get information about the parish activities! Village House Our 15 medically fragile women guests will arrive at St Martin of Tours on May 2, and we need your help. Not sure what you can do? There is something for everyone! And we will train you! You can't miss out on this great opportunity to participate in this important ministry. Volunteers can sign up for training and shifts at http://signup.com/go/yxlfdc. For new volunteers, please note that the training on Monday, April 16 at 6:30pm in the Community Building will include the opportunity to get fingerprinted. Fingerprinting is not required if you have been fingerprinted for the Diocese (e.g., through Village House, or the School), or if you will be providing meals or doing laundry for our guests. Trainings are also scheduled on Wed, April 18 and Mon, April 23 at 6:30pm in the Community Building. Please consider helping out!

Faith Formation Corner For this week s Faith Formation Corner, we will explore another Confirmation Candidate s question. They ask, How did God come to life? This question may relate to God as the fullness of the Trinity at the beginning of creation or to God as Jesus rising from the dead, so let s take a look at both. Starting with God and the mystery of creation, we can look to paragraphs 295-300 in the Catechism to learn how God created out of nothing and was the first cause of everything. We believe that God always existed, so we can t really consider God coming to life, but we can look to God s act of creation as God bringing life into the rest of creation. For Jesus rising from the dead, we can look to paragraphs 647-649 to help us understand that nobody can say how it came about, but Jesus resurrection is an object of faith in that it is a transcendent intervention of God and Jesus effects his own Resurrection by virtue of his divine power. These mysteries are worth praying over throughout one s life, but let us all spend some extra time in this Easter Season contemplating the Paschal Mystery. If you have a question you d like us to address or a Faith Formation related update you d like to share, please contact either Daniel or Megan they do their best to get to it. We look forward to this new way to engage with you! Registration Now Open!: The Diocesan Youth Retreat (DYR) is the annual summer retreat hosted by the Diocese of San Jose s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. The goal of DYR is to gather and empower teen participants to live fully the gospel of Jesus Christ, develop their Catholic identity, instill a zeal for the New Evangelization and celebrate their call to greatness as teens to use their God given gifts to spread the life and light of Christ to all they encounter.
