Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord December 25, 2016 Readings: Is 52:7-10; Heb 1:1-6; Jn 1:1-18 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear friends, Today a child is born, a son is given. "Today" is a very critical word in the life of faith. When used in Scripture and in liturgy, it doesn t refer simply to this twenty-four hour day, but rather implies immediacy. "Now is the time," the prophets say; and the truth is, now is always the time. There is no time that is so real and effective as now. In fact, now is the only time in which conversion is possible, and grace happens. Today is Christmas day, a day anticipated for four weeks. Children have eagerly waited for its coming, for the presents they hope are coming their way. The poor have longed to see it, since the season awakens the generosity of many hearts. Faith-filled people wait for this day for the spiritual gifts it brings. We await the coming of Jesus, not only in the flesh as a child in his mother's arms, but also the coming of Christ robed in glory, ushering in the age of a new heaven and a new earth. Will that new age come "today"? Most of us hope not; that is, we hope not to see the end of the world we know, at least not until after Christmas dinner! But the new age of justice does come today, may come in this very moment, if we choose to bring Christ home with us to dwell in our lives. When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flock, the work of Christmas begins: to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild nations, to bring peace among all, to make music in the heart. Now the Work of Christmas Begins is a poem and litany by Howard Thurman (1899-1981) African-American theologian, educator, and civil rights leader. Peace, love, and a blessed Christmas, Mission Statement Gifted by God, called by Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a parish committed to serving the academic community and all those who choose to be part of our parish family.
