Page 3 Clergy Corner As we approach the upcoming Respect Life month of January, I would like to reflect upon two of the many reasons why our Church constantly emphasizes the beauty of God-given human life. And the two reasons on which I would like to focus are based upon the two feasts that we celebrate this weekend and next: the feast of the Holy Family on one hand and the feast of the Epiphany on the other hand. First of all, as we reflect upon the feast of the Holy Family, we realize it is the presence of the Christ Child which made the union of St. Joseph and the Virgin Mary so sacred. At the same time, we also realize that the Sacrament of Matrimony makes this same Lord Jesus present in the union of all Matrimonied husbands and wives. And when husband and wife allow God s love present in their marriage to overflow to a child, then that child is saturated with that same divine love of Christ Jesus Himself. Children are not simply some biological by-product. They are made sacred because they are consecrated by the overflowing love of God present in the union of husband and wife. Secondly, next weekend we celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, when the newborn Lord Jesus was made manifest to the Gentile world represented by the visiting wise men. This feast of the Epiphany reminds us and re-assures us that God s own divine Son, in becoming man, united Himself to each and every member of the entire human race. And, once again, it is this union of God s Son with all human beings that makes each and every one of us sacred and worthy of utmost respect. Granted, other people may not always treat us as vessels of God s divine life. And, when we sin, we do not act as vessels of God s divine life. But that is what we are. These two feasts of the Holy Family and the Epiphany are two ways to deepen our appreciation of all God-given human life. Each year we use the feasts of Christmas and Mary, Mother of God plus these feasts of the Holy Family and the Epiphany to emphasize that God s only begotten son did indeed unite Himself to the entire human race. In doing so, He made sacred each human life.
