My Brothers and Sisters, Several years ago, a friend of mine was stationed at Luke Air Force Base as a Captain in the US Air Force. He was also a priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, who had been released by his bishop for a few years to help serve the spiritual needs of the largely young adult Catholics in the USAF. There were occasions when I had the opportunity to provide some ministerial assistance (celebrating Masses and hearing confessions) at the Luke Chapel when my chaplain-friend had to be out of town, at one point when he was deployed to Iraq. Perhaps because I had served as a hospital chaplain (as part of my seminary formation) at Andrews AFB, I felt at ease with the military culture and was moved by the sincerity and spiritual thirst of the Catholic Air Force personnel at Luke. Current statistics reveal that Catholics represent roughly 25% of men and women serving in our armed forces, yet only 8% of military chaplains are Catholic priests. Active duty priestschaplains have dropped from 400 around the time of 9/11/2001 to about 250 today due to priests reaching retirement faster than they can be replaced. The reduced number of chaplains relative to the proportion of Catholics in the military means that often our young Catholic servicemen and women have to turn to other denominations for spiritual nourishment. The Archdiocese for the Military Services (AMS), formerly the U.S. Military Ordinariate, is responsible for the ministry provided by Catholic chaplains around the world and provides spiritual outreach to some 1.8 million Catholics and their families who are affiliated with the U.S. Armed Forces worldwide. Among other roles, the AMS supports not only priest-chaplains but lay leaders and ministry coordinators so as to meet the pastoral needs of active duty young adult Catholics. The AMS offers catechesis and faith formation to military personnel and their families, maintains over 2.5 million sacramental records going back to 1917, recruits for new chaplains and partners with dioceses in training seminarians who will serve in a chaplaincy role for a certain number of years once they are ordained. The amazing thing is that the Archdiocese for the Military Services receives no funding from the U.S. military or government agencies, and has no parishes to provide a weekly source of funding. The Archdiocese depends solely on the generous donations from general public, from current and retired priest-chaplains and from private grants. This year, for the first time, Catholics across the United States are being asked to participate in a special collection for the Archdiocese of the Military Services. This special AMS appeal will take place next (Veteran s Day) weekend, November 9 th and 10 th. Because this is a new appeal, special envelopes are not provided in parishioners envelope packets this year but envelopes are available at the church exits for use in next week s second collection, as are flyers entitled Serving those who Serve explaining the work of the AMS. Please respond as generously as you can to this appeal in doing so, you will help the Archdiocese for the Military Services minister to the spiritual needs of our Catholic servicemen and women. Blessings and peace, Rev. Charles G. Kieffer, V.F. Pastor

PARISH NEWS Spiritual Adoption Update: Your spiritually adopted baby is in his/her second month in the womb. The developing baby is now called a fetus, which is Latin for little one. He or she is making rapid progress developing all external and internal organs. During the second month, baby teeth form and fingers and toes are developing. Ears, nose, lips and tongue can now be clearly seen. Brain waves can be recorded. The skeleton changes from cartilage to bone. Forty muscle sets begin their first exercises. This little one can now suck his or her thumb. By eight weeks all body systems are present. Your baby s mother most likely knows she is pregnant by now, or she will soon be finding out. Pray for her. See the bulletin boards in the Ramada or church vestibules for a visual depiction of what your baby looks like. Daily Stuff? Earthquakes - hurricanes - the economy - relationships - work - faith. Are these areas with which you find yourself wrestling frequently? Maybe you could benefit from talking over this "daily stuff" with someone. Counseling may assist. Please call Duncan Macaulay for more information @ 602-826-1982 or the Parish Office @ 602-840-0850. Appointments are available in the Parish Office on Wednesdays. Back Again! Bible Class News Our St. Theresa Bible Class featuring the live lectures of Kevin Saunders is up and running on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30PM in Fr. Feeney Hall. You might have driven by the parish on a Thursday night and wondered why the parking lot is full of cars. It is because so many parishioners, people just like you, are making Thursday night "Bible Night" at St. Theresa. Currently, Kevin Saunders is working his way through the Book of Genesis in his unique and insightful chapter by chapter and verse by verse format. He has worked the class up to the time of Abraham and has almost two thirds of the Book of Genesis left before our Christmas Break. Why don't you carve out an hour and a half and come out to the class on a Thursday night to experience the Bible Class excitement for yourself. You will be glad you did! Got Paper?
