The office will be closed for the Christmas holidays December 24 January 1. Parish Office will resume regular hours on Wednesday Jan 2 Bulletin Publishing Service Beginning after the new year you will see a change in the look of our parish bulletin. Our bulletin publishing service will be Pilot Bulletins. With the switch to this new bulletin provider the parish will receive more color options for our bulletins, enhanced picture quality, up-grade of paper quality, laser print for clear, rich font, and several extra pages along with an up-front sign-on bonus of $1000.00 plus $1200.00 annual revenue sharing stipend to be paid to the parish in quarterly installments. The church bulletin generates revenue by the ads placed in it. In order for Pilot Bulletins to continue to provide this wonderful product, service and revenue for our parish ad space needs to be filled. You can help us fill these spots by placing an ad for your business or service or recommending a business or service that we could contact. You can either contact the parish office with that information or contact Pilot Bulletins directly (contact Ken Romano, 617-779-3771). Christmas Letter This year we mailed out a Christmas letter to all parishioners on our parish listing. If you didn t get one, can you please update your address in the Parish Office? If you have moved or joined the parish please let us know. In addition to sharing Christmas blessings, the letter summarized some of the goings on of our parish in the last few months. If you regularly read the bulletin, you probably already know most of what was covered, but we re trying to reach out to members of our community who are not always here and may not always see the bulletin. If you can help spread the word to your family or neighbors, that would be very helpful. Thanks Fr Paul SJ

Faith Formation Religious Education 207-358-7678 Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle January 2018 Prayer Intentions We now start the third year of urging parishioners and friends to pray for our parish and other world needs and for one another through these prayer intentions and the idea of a Parish Prayer Circle. I hope that these intentions and the commitment to pray have been a source of grace and blessing to you and to our parish, school, and world. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. The Pope Intention: Evangelization Young People That young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world. 3. That our young people and all of us may find in Jesus, not harsh rules, but a call to a way of living life that is freeing and leads to a sense of purpose, direction, and an experience of being known and loved by God and invited to share love with others. December 29/30 Feast of the Holy Family The first Sunday of the Christmas season is the Feast of the Holy Family (or Dec 30 if Christmas falls on a Sunday). The celebration is another way saying that God in Jesus has come to be among us, one of us, living life as a human being like us in all things but sin. As we look at the families today, we know that they can take Liturgy of the Word Sundays 10:00 AM Mass St. Joseph Church January 6 th January 20 th February 3 rd March 3 rd March 17 th April 7 th May 5 th May 19 th Winter Weather Cancellations Weekday Mass Cancellations - when the Portland schools are cancelled or have a delayed opening beyond 9:00 AM, weekday Mass will be cancelled. This is to ensure everyone's safety on the roads and also to allow our grounds people time to plow parking lots and clear walks and steps around the churches. The Parish Offices will follow this same policy. St. Brigid's School will make its own school cancellation/delay notices. Weekend Masses are almost never cancelled, but each person should use good judgement about whether it is safe to travel. Hear ye! Don t miss out on all the great events happening at Our Lady of Hope Parish! It s a busy time of year and it s going to get busier. Be sure the parish office has your email address so you can receive the most current information on what s happening at your parish. Feel free to call the parish office (797-7026), email the parish office Linda.McCormack@Portlanddiocese.org, drop a note in the offertory basket with your name and email address on it or on the home page of the parish website Subscribe to our Email list for Bulletins and Events (Click Here) and we ll get you all set up to be in the know. various shapes and forms, and for some of us, our family may not be our birth family, but those people who are most closely part of our lives. Jesus family itself was not the ideal traditional family. His human ancestry includes foreigners, people of bad reputation, sinners, a king complicate in a murder. His mother was pregnant before she married, an offense that could have cost her life. As an adult Jesus did not follow the traditional pattern of being married. He spent most of his last three years on the road surrounded by a varied collection of people, some of whom were considered undesirable. God in Jesus has truly come among us, to live and know human life. May our families, whatever shape they take, be blessed by our loving God. Putting Herod back into Christmas We talk about putting Christ back into Christmas. We also need to put Herod back into Christmas. Far from spoiling the image, the Christmas story actually makes much more sense if we include the unpleasant aspects. Perhaps it s because we don t want to upset the children, because we want to shield them. But lots of bad things happen and children know about them. To include in the Christmas story the slaughter of the innocents only serves to show that Jesus was born into the real world. Horrible though it was, it s no worse than many things that happen today. When we question God s whereabouts and intentions in the catastrophes of life there are no simple answers. The Christmas story is fantastic but it s not fantasy. It s fantastic because of the good news that God became human. We turn it into fantasy if we make it all cozy and nice and avoid the uncomfortable bits. Cozy and nice is fine for a short while; it refreshes and relaxes us. But the good news is God in the midst of the light and the darkness, giving us strength and hope for the long haul of life. Liz Gibson with inspiration by the Sojourners Community Budget Envelopes We have been experiencing a large volume of parishioners not receiving their budget envelopes since making the switchover to our new vendor. We are not certain of why this is happening. There have been a few occasions that the address was correct on the former budget envelopes but not correct in the parish software we used when sending the information to the new vendor. Another problem is the new vendor's envelopes look different though still clearly marked with Our Lady of Hope Parish so people may have mistakenly thought it to be 'junk' mail and tossed them out accidentally. We are working to correct the situation. If you participate in the budget envelope program and haven't received your envelopes please call the parish office, 797-7026, so we can make arrangements to get you envelopes. We are very sorry for any confusion and inconvenience this has cause. IV

Finding words to name our desires. (from Creighton University Ministry Office) +Lord, let me experience your coming into my heart today. Lord, I want to embrace the gift of peace you are offering me. +Please, Lord, slow me down. +Forgive me my impatience, my judgements, my jealousies, my greed and any way I make strained relationships even worse. +Help me be sensitive to the needs, struggles, pain of others today. +Give me the courage to offer gestures of peace and love and reconciliation, where they are needed today. +Help me chew the message of your coming today: into poverty, to enter my own experience, to be truly with me. +Prepare my heart today, O Lord, that I may be open to the graces you offer, particularly in the struggles, the dryness, the sadness and the conflict. +Only you know how serious this illness is, my Lord. With the grace of your coming this Christmas, prepare my soul to begin to surrender to you, that I might live in this world more and more with my heart set on the banquet you have prepared for me, when you come to bring me home to you for ever. +Lord, I so want to be a source of light and peace for my family and friends. Keep me centered on the mercy and peace you offer me, that I may love them with great joy and tenderness. +Lord, you know my heart, with all its mystery and complexity. Please let me know my desires, let me know what I need, let me humbly ask you for your graces these precious days ahead.
