Christmas Message The twenty-fifth day of December, unknown ages from the time when God created the heavens and the earth and then formed man and woman in his own image. Several thousand years after the flood, God made the rainbow shine forth as a sign of the covenant. Twenty-one centuries from the time of Abraham and Sarah; thirteen centuries after Moses led the people of Israel out of Egypt; eleven hundred years from the time of Ruth and the judges; one thousand years from the anointing of David as king; in the sixty-fifth week according to the prophecy of Daniel. In the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; the seven hundred and fiftysecond year from the foundation of the city of Rome; the forty-second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus; the whole world being at peace, Jesus Christ, eternal God and Son of the Father, desiring to sanctify the world by his most merciful coming, being conceived by the Holy Spirit, and nine months having passed since his conception, was born in Bethlehem of Judea of the Virgin Mary. This is the nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. How do we understand this birth of Jesus, this Incarnation of God into human life? It is truly a profound mystery that invites us to reflect year after year on the richness of God s love and care for each one of us. No matter how often we reflect on this Christmas miracle we always come away with a new insight into the goodness and graciousness of our God. There was a television show called Son Rise about a couple who had an autistic child. They wanted their son to change and enter into their space, their world. And they did everything they could to get that child to enter into their world and to be like them, the normal people. And then one day the parents realized that they would have to enter his world. Indeed the only way to relate to their son, the only way to be closer to him was to leave their world behind and enter his. It was nonsensical and grueling to do so. The mother entered into the child s world on his terms, day after day sitting on the floor, playing seemingly silly, goal-less games with this child, waving her hands and entering his world. After years many days and thousands of hours of this her son spoke to her! Tears rushed to her eyes as she embraced her son. By entering his world she connected with her son. There s the incarnation. That s the mystery of Christmas. That s the price God paid for us. God entered our world on our terms to feel the reality of being human, so we could speak back to God who would understand. May you come to experience and know in this season the closeness of our loving God, a connectedness to God. May the light from his eyes be your guide in moments of darkness. May the warmth of his breath increase the warmth of your heart. May the gentle touch of his hand calm your every fear. May the strength of his embrace give you courage in all your endeavors. And may the assurance of his presence bring you his peace. On behalf of the parish staff, I would like to wish you and your family a very Blessed and Joyful Christmas Season. Our prayer is that the peace the Christ child brings will be the peace that dwells with you each and every day of the New Year. FUNERAL Our sympathy and prayers to the family of Josephine Caruso. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
