Dear Parishioners at St. Bernard and Ascension, I am Fr. Stan Mader, currently Pastor of St. Joseph in Waconia. With Fr. Gregory Abbott s new assignment as Chaplain at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, the Archbishop has appointed me to be Parochial Administrator of your parishes through June. I d like to explain a little about what that means and give you a little background on myself. A Parochial Administrator is a priest appointed by the bishop to substitute for the pastor when a parish becomes vacant. He has the same duties and rights as a pastor but has some limits, such as not being able to sell or dispose of parish property of any kind, such as land, buildings, statues, vestments, hymnals, etc. The administrator takes oversees the more secular things signing checks, directing personnel, as well as making sure the Sacramental needs are being addressed, until a pastor is named for the parish. The Archbishop has written he expects this to be done effective July 1 when most priest changes are made. I will be at the Joint Mission Team meeting on December 17 th, and in January will start being at the parishes a few hours a week. Another priest will be handling all the Sacramental things such as weekend Masses as well as a Mass on Friday and Monday, one in each parish, as well as funerals on those days. Funerals and other events on other days of the week will have to be addressed separately. You are certainly welcome to attend Masses in Waconia other days at 8:15 a.m. I hope to swap pulpits on occasion and have weekend Masses in your parishes every 4-6 weeks. About me: I grew up on a small dairy farm near St. Boni. Some of you may have known my parents, George and Mary Margaret Mader. I am the fourth of seven children. I went to High School at Holy Trinity in Winsted, and college at St. John s University in Collegeville, MN, where I earned a degree in Mathematics. For ten years I worked in the computer field as a system software specialist, six years with a large computer manufacturer and for four years had my own consulting business. I entered seminary at the age of 32, was ordained on May 30, 1992 when I was 36. I ve been a priest for 26 years, working in both small and very large parishes, and was also co-director of the Vocation Office for four years. I came to Waconia this past July. I love to travel (I just returned from my 8 th visit to the Holy Land). I ve been in 23 countries and 48 states. I enjoy readings, hiking, State Parks and I still play baseball (in a 50-and-over league). I love being a priest, and I look forward to our six months together. CALENDAR FOR ASCENSION AND ST. ADVENT Q & A Q: Why is the third candle on the Advent wreath pink? A: The preparatory season of Advent has been celebrated in the Church since the fifth century. Originally, it mirrored Lent as a more intense time of fasting and penance. Like Lent, which has a Laetare Sunday anticipating Easter more joyfully, Advent has a similar break. On the third Sunday of Advent, the Church celebrates Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete comes from the Latin word meaning rejoice. We hear it prominently in the first reading as the Scriptural tone shifts. The rose color in the candle and Mass vestments symbolically reminds us that, in the midst of a season of preparation and anticipation, we wait with joyful hope. There is no doubt that Christ is coming; there is no doubt that He has, in many senses, already arrived. Young Adult Listening Sessions with Archbishop Hebda Archbishop Hebda invites young adults (ages 18-49) of the Archdiocese to join him for one of two listening sessions regarding the abuse crisis in the Church. Attendees are encouraged to share their ideas for creating and maintaining safe environments, healing the Church, and moving forward together. The first session is Monday, December 10 from 7-9 p.m. at the Catholic Center, 777 Forest Street, St. Paul. The second is Wednesday, December 19 from 7-9 p.m. at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. For more information, go to archspm.org and click on the events tab.
