G M October 28, 2018 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time "Son of David, have pity on me!" Has the cry of Bartimaeus ever escaped your lips? Today's Gospel tells the story of a blind man with a difficult lot in life. He made a living by begging coins off passing travelers. When word reaches him that Jesus will be passing by, this is when he begins his shouts for mercy. Jesus hears Bartimaeus' cry and beckons him forward. "What do you want me to do for you?" Last week, Jesus asked a similar question to James and John. Their response was a clutch for fame. Bartimaeus' response is much humbler. "Lord, I want to see." How strange this interaction must have seemed to the onlookers. The man is blind! Of course he wants to see! But Jesus is always teaching us. By asking us what we want, Jesus reveals the dispositions of our hearts. God already knows them, but do we? By asking James and John to name their ambition, their selfishness is exposed to them and to the other disciples. By asking Bartimaeus to name his longing, his faith is exposed to the entire crowd. Jesus invites participation in our own redemption. He doesn't save us without us! Take some time in silent prayer today. Place yourself in this story of Bartimaeus. Imagine yourself there on the dusty, crowded roadside. Jesus is calling you! When you stand before him, his focus is on you and you alone. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asks. Search your heart. How would you respond? What part of your heart is Jesus asking you to expose? He has come to heal and to restore. May we, too, be sent! "Go... your faith has saved you." 40 D L P H The 40 Days for Life campaign will soon get underway. Throughout October to early November, people will be united in prayer outside the Planned Parenthood clinic on Orin Road 24 hours a day, seven days per week, to turn clients toward the face of our Blessed Mother and help them choose the gift of life through our prayers for them, and for an end to the sin of abortion. Our Blessed Mother invited all to pray for the unborn and to preserve the gift of life. This is a wonderful opportunity to answer that call! Your presence in prayer truly makes a difference. Parishioners from St. Bernard are invited to take part in the campaign on Thursday, November 1, from 3:00 4:00pm. Please meet directly at Planned Parenthood. Parking is available at the north end of Orin Road, or at the Women s Care Center, located directly across the street. I C C This weekend, the International Combined Collection is being conducted across the diocese. Enclosed in this bulletin is a brochure explaining all of the individual collections and an envelope to make your donation. Please consider how you can make a difference in the lives of so many. Daylight saving time ends at 2:00am Sunday, November 4 C F P The Diocesan Office of Worship is hosting a workshop about Catholic Funerals on Thursday, November 15 from 1:003:00pm at Holy Name Heights (702 S. High Point Road in Madison). Patrick Gorman, director of the Office of Worship, will lead this session. November is the month in which we offer fervent prayers for the dead. It is also a time to consider our own mortality. This informational session is for those who wish to learn more about Catholic funerals and related rituals and who may even wish to consider a plan for their own funeral. Each participant will receive a copy of Now and at the Hour of Our Death which offers guidance in planning your own funeral. This seminar is free of charge. A donation of $3 to offset the cost of the participant booklets will be appreciated if you are able. The workshop will not address other endoflife issues, living wills or estate planning. Please register by November 8 by calling the Office of Worship (608.821.3080) or emailing worship@straphael.org. You also may register online at madisondiocese.org/funeral. B P A J C S With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar is a dynamic and passionate retelling of the last 7 days of the life of Jesus Christ.
