Volume 107, Issue 11 November 2010 www.kc799.org Knight Times Monthly Newsletter of Dallas Council 799 Dallas Council 799 Knights of Columbus 10110 Shoreview Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Contents Chaplain s Message By Fr. Josef Vollmer König The month of November is a month of remembrances. Who are the saints we celebrate? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains a Saint is The holy one who leads a life in union with God through the grace of Christ and receives the reward of eternal life. All of us are called to be Saints. The Church, throughout its history, has declared members of the faithful saints, for example, Mary the Mother of Our Lord and the Apostles. The beatification of John Henry Newman was officially proclaimed by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 September 2010. At the beginning of October, our Holy Father declared six new saints, they are: Mary MacKillop (1842 1901), the first Calendar of Events Australian St. André Bessette (1845 1937) St. Candida Maria de Jesus Cipitria y Barriola a Spanish religious; (1845 1912) St. Stanislao Soltys (1433 1489) ), a Polish religious St. Giulia Salzano (1846 1929) St. Battisat da Varano (1458 1524 In our liturgical celebration we celebrate their feast day. We call on them as intercessors. There are many unnamed saints. Children at baptism are without sin. They are incapable of committing sin. Should the die they are in the presence of God and therefore are saints. Many faithful who are never canonized, who lived their lives in union with God are saints. I am sure all of us can remember such a person. In the Creed we declare we believe in the communion of saints. Continued, Page 2 Contact Chaplain s Message Fr. Chaplain s Message, cont. We through our baptism belong to this communion. Therefore we celebrate the Saints the Church sets before us as role models and intercessors. We celebrate the Saints who have been part of our lives, our parents, grandparents, a member of our family, or a friend. We celebrate what we are called to be. Pope John Paul II tells us, Let us look at the saints who are valiant witnesses of fidelity to Christ; let us be inspired by their example in climbing the mountain of holiness. Be Saints! This as you well know is every believers calling. On the day following the feast of All Saints, we celebrate All Souls Day by remembering all our family and friends that have gone before us. On November 11 we remember our Veterans for their service to this country. Let us remember one another in Prayer. God s blessings, Fr. Josef Father Michael J. McGivney 1852 1890 Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism Grand Knight s Letter By John J. Little Greetings to my Brother Knights: While it hardly seems possible, we are already moving into November and the holidays. This November presents us with wonderful opportunities to live out the four principles of our Order Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We begin with Election Day on November 2. Exercising our right to vote expresses both our Patriotism and our Unity as a nation. Please remember to get to the polls early, as we have our regular monthly meeting on November 2 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 6 provides an opportunity to live the principles of Charity and Fraternity by participating in another blood drive at our Council. Details concerning the drive can be found in this newsletter, and I encourage all Brother Knights who are able (and their family members) to participate in this effort. On Sunday, November 7, members of our Council and their families will celebrate our annual Memorial Mass, honoring our Brother Knights who have passed during the last year. The events of the day will begin at 8 a.m. with a Corporate Communion Mass at St. Patrick s, followed by a Memorial Service in our lower hall beginning at approximately 9:45 a.m. We will conclude the morning with Chef Oliver s Sunday brunch, compliments of Council 799. Thursday, November 11, is Veteran s Day. Express our Unity as an Order and our Patriotism by flying your flag and saying a prayer for those members of the armed forces who remain in harm s way. We conclude the month with Thanksgiving, on November 25, and the first Sunday of Advent, on November 28. During that long weekend, take a moment to give thanks for the many gifts that Our Lord has bestowed upon you and to consider how you will prepare to celebrate His Coming at Christmas. Blessings to all, John Little, GK Knights of the Month For September, Council 799 opted to recognize two of its long time members as Knights of the Month. Richard Johnston Our first Knight of the Month is Richard Johnston. Richard is employed by Atlantis Services (which does and has done a ton of work on our facilities) and is a Eucharistic minister at St. Pius. Richard has also been the coordinator of our Vocation Chalice program for many years. We greatly appreciate his service, but it is for his performance at the Knights Pool Party that we honored him as Knight of the Month. With a little assistance from his Brothers, Richard managed to raise $162 for the Hike for Life. In exchange he agreed to go down the slide into the pool while fully clothed (with a pink tube around his waist, no less). The spectacle was a great lesson in charity for all who were present. John Taylor Our second Knight of the Month is John Taylor. As many of you know, John is in the commercial construction business, has served in the past as a Board member for 799, is a member of St. Pius Parish and is a regular patron of the KC Lounge (when not out hunting something). We ve chosen to honor John for his personal efforts to help solve the flooding/reconstruction issues that seemed to plague us during August and September. John lent his considerable expertise to the effort to determine why we were having flooding issues. He volunteered to sign on as the general contractor for the reconstruction project, located responsible subcontractors, and got it all done in time for Oliver to host a weekend full of receptions and other events. His Brother Knights greatly appreciate his willingness to offer both his time and talent to resolve this extremely vexing set of problems. Knights of Columbus Dallas Council 799 Page 2

More specifics will be forwarded as they become available. Each year, the Great 799 supports seminarians in various stages of formation through the RSVP program. For the 2010 2011 fraternal year, our Council will continue to support four seminarians who we have sponsored throughout their time in the seminary. Those four men are: James Yamauchi (in Rome this year) Paul Bechter, at Holy Trinity Seminary Zach Packard, at Holy Trinity Seminary Juan Carlos Marin, at Redemptoris Mater Seminary. Each of these seminarians will receive $1,000 from Council 799 to support them in their continued preparation for the priesthood. In addition to these four men, Council 799 will likely support an additional six to eight seminarians with donations of $500 each. The members of the Board are currently working to identify the additional seminarians to be supported by our Council.
