Bill Kneemiller is now back in Iowa after his summer duties with the military at Fort Knox. Please welcome him to our community! I certainly welcome the assistance. Feel free to phone him if you have a need for priestly assistance. Last Easter I was visiting my sister, Jackie and her husband, Phil. We were talking about the various trips they had taken since their retirement. I mentioned to them that they had never been to Italy. Jackie explained that Phil did not want to travel to Europe. To my surprise, Phil looked at me and said, Tony, you take her! I think he was doing this in jest but Jackie looked at me and said would you do that? I responded: Sure, I ll take you to Italy! The rest is history. This Monday, Labor Day, Jackie and I are on our way to Italy to fulfill a dream that she has had for a long time. I m very happy to assist her in fulfilling that dream. I will be out of the country until Friday, September 16. Please pray for safe travel. During our time in Italy, we will be traveling to Florence, Siena, Assisi and Rome. I will be keeping our parish in my prayers and will be remembering you at the tombs of Francis, Saint Peter and other saints as well. I ask your prayers also for the people of Italy who were affected by the earthquake that hit the central region of that country. When I return from my trip we will have a major kick off event for our capital campaign on the weekend of September 17 and 18. As we pray the campaign prayer and look at responding to the needs before us I cannot help but be grateful for the generosity of so many in our parish who have taken up the task of leadership for this campaign. All of us agree that this important work will only be accomplished by a spirit of generosity and prayer among all members of the parish. The Worship and Prayer Commission has developed a devotional booklet that everyone should find helpful as we pray for our parish during this time. This booklet should be available this weekend, but if not, it will here be soon. The booklet is called the Face-to-Face Book as we encourage one another to speak to the Lord face to face and encourage you to come to church and pray before the Blessed Sacrament. God is faithful. Let us respond in gratitude and gift. Questions to ponder this week: *Jesus speaks of the cost of discipleship this weekend in our Gospel. Has your own life as a disciple of Jesus cost you anything? Has it cost you time, talent and/or treasure? Has it set or reset priorities for your life? How does love change priorities?

Glorifying God In Gratitude & Gift: Thirty years ago, they walked their son up the steps of St. Paul s for his very first day of preschool. Since then, all the Adams kids attended school here, received First Communion here, and embraced the sacraments of Reconciliation and Confirmation here. This last summer their daughter Hannah was married in St. Paul s- a very special blessing for them. Each moment touched their hearts in a deep and lasting way. This parish has nurtured the faith and education of their children for over three decades. St. Paul s has been like our extended family, Mary says. It has supported us through the good times and the bad. More than that, the people of St. Paul s have been a rock of faith for the Adams, praying for them and lifting them up when they most needed it. Don and Mary have been supported by St. Paul s through the ups and downs, they ve met life-long friends here, they ve coached and cried and prayed and served here. They really can t imagine where they d be without the love and generosity of this parish community. When Don and Mary were asked to serve as co-chairs for the Glorify God in Gratitude & Gift capital campaign, they were initially reluctant to do it. But when they thought about all that this parish has done for their faith, their family, and their marriage, they couldn t come up with a good reason NOT to do it. We love this parish family, they said. We re going to do all we can to make it strong so it can continue to nurture our Catholic faith and the faith of those who come after us. It s up to us to do this. Brian and Leslie Bassier joined St. Paul s in 1998 and began their involvement with St. Paul School when they enrolled the oldest of six their children, Ben, in Kindergarten in 2000. If all goes according to plan, their youngest child, Timmy, will graduate with the Class of 2023. Brian and Leslie have also invested their time and talents in the St. Paul s community in a wide variety of areas throughout the years such as the Finance Council, the Parish Council, the School Board, the Altar & Rosary Society, CEW, and coaching. Now they have accepted the invitation to be co-chairs of the capital campaign. They decided to accept this new role because the parish community means so much to their family. Brian recalls, We moved around a lot the first ten years of our marriage, but once we came here we recognized that this parish had a different feel than the other parishes we had attended over the years. The sense of community was so strong and we were welcomed into the community with open arms. We are supportive of the campaign because there are some deferred maintenance items that have not been appropriately addressed over the years. The Bassiers involvement in the capital campaign is also inspired by the vision that they have for St. Paul s future. Brian shares that he hopes that St. Paul s will continue to be a loving, caring, faith-filled community as it s always been, but at the same time, striving to spread the message of God s love to not only our existing parish members, but also those people who are open to hear it as we continue to develop our mission of building intentional disciples.

Meet the Adams, the Bassiers, and the Burchetts Ryan and Monica Burchett have been parish members since moving to the Quad Cities 9 years ago. Their leadership in CEW, music ministry, RCIA, Home & School, Ignite, and Altar & Rosary has made an enormous impact on both sides of the street. In their mind, they are just paying it forward. Visionary families stepped forward decades ago so that our family could encounter Christ through this community, Ryan says. We re proud to have this opportunity to bless the next generation. It is plainly evident that it s time to do some work on the church and school, Ryan says. But this is not simply about bricks and mortar. We have an opportunity here, not only to restore our buildings but to unite around a singular goal, Ryan reminds us. We want every parishioner to be alive and rooted in Christ and then sent out into the world to build the kingdom. Every person has something to offer, both in gifts and gratitude. The theme of this campaign is Glorifying God in Gratitude and Gift. We believe that this campaign will strengthen and renew our parish. Prayer is a vital component for the success of this campaign and the renewal of our parish. With this in mind, we will offer 24 hours of adoration and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament following the 9:30 Mass on Friday, September 30 and ending with Benediction at 7:45 on Saturday morning, October 1. During these hours of prayer each parish family will be prayed for by name. Go to our parish sign-up genius web page to select a time to participate. Families to be prayed for each hour will be designated alphabetically.
