St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Fr. Vernon. Fr. Vernon will be visiting this week, Monday until Thursday, to pick up some things before he heads to his new assignment at Cross in the Woods shrine in northern Michigan (the same place Fr. Tom Vos is stationed). I hope some of you will find time to stop by and chat with him. Fr. Sylvano. We received word that Fr. Sylvano took a fall and had to go to the ER for stitches in his upper lip. He also had to go to the dentist to check on some possible damage to his front teeth. On the sink in the friary, there is a big container of dish detergent. On the side of the container are the words please keep upright. I guess that would be good advice for Fr. Syl, as well. Please keep him in your prayers. ACSA. We re getting ready to start this fall s ACSA campaign. Every parish in every diocese is expected to shoulder a certain amount of the financial load that it takes to run a diocese s office and programs. The friars have discussed the extent of their pledge for this year; I hope you will do the same with your family. Our assigned goal this year is $65,926. Columbarium Project. Donations are starting to come in for our columbarium project at the parish cemetery. To date, we have received donations and pledges totaling $8,245. You should have received a donation envelope in the recent bulk mailing from the parish office. Otherwise there are envelopes available in the church entrances. Free Webinar Series: Building a Better Disciple. This fall the Office for Catechesis will offer a free webinar series for Catholic adults. Over the course of five webinars we will explore what it means to be a Christian through the lens of Acts 2:42. They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to prayers. Full information on the series is being posted at BuildingABetterDisciple.tumblr.com. The webinars are scheduled for five consecutive Monday evenings; all webinars begin at 7:30p (Central Time) and will last 90 minutes. You can register for the 2nd session (October 20) by using the following link: (https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/961033874). Before understanding how to become a disciple we must first know what a disciple is. Through the person of Jesus Christ we will come to know what it means to claim the name Christian. Head Count. Please remember that all parishes in the diocese are required to take a head count at all the Masses during the month of October. Parish members: stand up and be counted. And while you re at it, bring your family and friends to church during October. Fr. Austin. Fr. Austin will be back at SFA on October 26 to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He will preside at the 10:30 Mass that Sunday. There will be a reception afterward at the KC meeting room. Petitions. Speaking of the staff, on the 3 rd or 4 th Tuesday of each month, depending on my schedule, the staff gathers for prayer. During that prayer time, we pray for the needs of our parish members. If you have a specific need that you would like us to pray for, please contact the parish office. Also, if you would like to join us as we pray for the needs of our parish members, you are certainly welcome. Still More Meetings. I will be attending the province s annual Leadership Conference beginning on Monday, October 20 and ending on October 23. From St. Louis, I will travel to Quincy for the meeting of the QU Board of Trustees on Saturday, October 25. I will probably spend the night with the friars in Springfield and will be back home in time to concelebrate with Fr. Austin at his jubilee Mass. All Saints. Even though the feast of All Saints is not a holy day of obligation this year, we will have a Vigil Mass at 7:00 p.m. on October 31. As you travel to and from church, please remember that it is Halloween and that children may be walking through the town. All Souls. We will have our annual All Souls memorial service at the cemetery on November 2 beginning at 2:00 p.m. We will have our annual Mass of Remembrance in the evening beginning at 6:00... 86th Annual Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Convention will be held on Wednesday, October 29th, 8:00 am-4:30 pm at Pere Marquette Lodge and Conference Center, Grafton, IL. Two keynote speakers will be featured: Theresa Shank Grentz, famous author, Olympic coach and Women s Basketball Hall of Fame member; and ValLimar Jansen, a highly regarded singer, composer and recording artist known for her work with contemporary Christian, gospel, and gospel-jazz style. October 19, 2014 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time page 5 40 Days for Life Thank you to all who participated in our Day of Prayer this past Wednesday, especially our youth. Please remember to continue to pray and fast for an end to abortion as our Campaign of Prayer for Life continues through November 2 nd. In the U.S. alone, there is one abortion performed every 26 seconds. How disposable a child s life has become to our nation! Let us ask God s forgiveness and help to change hearts as we reflect on this Scripture: Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them; they shall not be ashamed, but shall speak with their enemies in the gate. Psalm 127:3-5 Prayer: Heavenly Father, please keep me from taking for granted the gift of children. Help us to remember this heritage that you have given us. Make us faithful stewards of these precious lives, that each generation might be raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. Jesus had a brilliant way of navigating tricky situations. In today's Gospel, the Pharisees "plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech." But he outwitted them, as usual. They wanted to catch him being a political rebel; they expected him to suggest that paying taxes to Caesar was unnecessary or even unjust. But instead, he shifted the focus. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling our civic responsibilities but also the necessity of giving to God what we owe him. So, how do we know what we should "repay" to God? Well, Jesus' response to the Pharisees gives us our answer. He looked at the Roman coin that bore the image of Caesar on it. Then he concluded that the coin belonged to Caesar because it was made in his likeness. Now, what bears the image of God? What is made in his likeness? We are! "God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them" (Gn 1:27). If the coin belonged to Caesar, we belong to God. We repay God by giving him ourselves! This self-giving is what the Second Vatican Council called "the obedience of faith." Through this spiritual obedience, we freely commit ourselves to God, "offering the full submission of intellect and will to God" (Dei Verbum #5). Jesus is calling us today to use our will to choose to follow God. Indeed, the one thing we can give God in return for the gift of life is our will. He gave us the freedom to love him or not. And while the choice is always ours, today Jesus encourages us to make the right decision by giving God what is really his: ourselves! 2014 Liturgical Publications Inc
