Second Sunday of Advent, December 9, 2018 AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? Well, yes, it can. For a voice calls out in the desert. Here is the beginning of the salvation of God. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. SUPPORT THE RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS A donor writes, Your flyer touched my heart seeing the retired religious, such memories surfaced. Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the people of God. Please give to next week s second collection. Servers can be children or adults, male or female, (even a whole family). Children who serve without an adult must be at least 8 years old, have celebrated their First Eucharist, and commit to attend Mass regularly. We will teach you the specific actions and task of preparing the altar, carrying the Cross, bringing the gifts of bread and wine and the vessels to the altar, handling the Roman Missal (Book), and all the other ways of actively participating in the Eucharist and understanding its meaning. If you would like to be an Altar Server, please contact Jaime Paredes at: nikkijaimeparedes@yahoo.com or 619.322.2154, for more information and to schedule a training session. Second Sunday of Advent, December 9, 2018 Page 6 CHARTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE To report suspected sexual misconduct or child abuse within our institutions and ministries, by a member of the clergy or by a parish or Catholic school employee or volunteer can be made by contacting Lisa Petronis @ 858.490.8353 or @ www.sdcatholic.org/en-us/diocese/ contactvictimsassistance.aspx. RICHES are the instrument of all vices, because they render us capable of putting even our worst desires into execution. St. Ambrose PRAYERS FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY Prayers are offered for our beloved deceased every Monday after the 8:30am Mass in the Church. All are welcome to come and pray before the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue for the Souls in Purgatory. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. UPCOMING EVENTS IN THE DIOCESE 1. Catholic Young Adult Sports (Ages 18-39) The Catholic Young Adults Ministry is hosting a recreation outdoor basketball league starting on Sunday, January 6 through March 30 from 12pm to 3pm, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lakeside (13208 Lakeshore Dr.). Call or email Jim at 619.384.2918 or @ james@catholicyoungadultsports.com. 2.Ascension s Parish Mission Mark your calendars for Ascension s Parish Mission on January 21-24, 2019, (11292 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., SD 92124). We are excited to have the Fathers of Mercy, again, leading our parish mission this coming year. For all those who joined us this past Lent, Father Joseph Aytona, CPM, led an especially powerful and fruitful event. We are blessed to have Father Joseph s brother, Father Jewel Aytona, CPM, scheduled to lead our next mission in January. The Fathers of Mercy are a Roman Catholic Congregation of Priests whose primary apostolate is preaching parish missions and retreats, with an emphasis on the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Confession; and they have been doing it for over 100 years and are always outstanding. 3. Second Sunday of Advent, December 9, 2018 Page 7 ST. MARTIN OF TOURS ACADEMY DECEMBER 9, 2018 Sr. Eva from the Diocesan office Missionary Childhood Association spoke to all the students about missionary work in Kenya, the Philippines and Haiti. It was an inspiring and engaging presentation. She brought rosaries for the students to keep, and encouraged them to continue to pray for the missions all over the world. For Advent the students are being asked to bring in their own money to donate to the CRS Gift of Hope program which will help provide items such as mosquito nets, desks, uniforms, crop seed, and precious livestock for small villages and communities. One of the community outreach projects of the eighth grade class is to fill the Santa request letters from Responsibility, the preschool located next to the old Tijuana dumpsite. The 26 students took 13 letters and filled the children s wish list. The parish youth group and social ministry also contributed to the Santa letters. Parishioners donated to Responsibility $965.62 through the loose change box in November. David Lynch spoke to the eighth grade students on Nov. 30 th. about the school and how he started a new school in Nicaragua on a blue tarp just like he did in Tijuana. Since 1995, our parish and school has donated to Responsibility. David was very grateful and thankful for the support from our St. Martin of Tours community. The Alum of the Month for December is Rasik Cauchon-Desai from the Class of 2002. From kindergarten to 8th grade, St. Martin Academy taught me the fundamentals of English, Math, Science, Art, but also a subject with no state mandated curriculum - caring. To grow a child into a caring person, the lessons are not lectures or reading assignments, but rather taught by example. Examples of caring were demonstrated by Father Sproul, my teachers, and the day care staff. After SMA, I went to Helix High School, then received a B.S. in Business from SDSU in 2.5 years, followed by a Master s in Economics from UCSB - all with honors. I worked in auto insurance for a while, lived on the east coast for a couple years before my current job as Director of Sales for Mitchell International (the largest software company in San Diego). Workshop Way methodology taught me to self-start and self-organize my tasks. In the professional world, and in most areas of life, you will not have a teacher or a parent to guide you with the next task or help you when you get stuck. Being forced at an early age to understand that my task list was my responsibility, translates to so many other contexts. Especially with today s rapidly changing job market - the ability to recognize the right path, relearn, retool, and maintain ownership of one s skillset is critical Read more of Rasik s bio on stmartinacademy.org under Alum of the Month.
