Many of the country s poor worked as servants and lived in the homes of their employers. On Mothering Sunday, the servants were given the day off to return home and spend the day with their mothers. They often took a Mothering Cake to mark the day. In the United States, Mother s Day is the result of a campaign by Ana Jarvis, whose mother had expressed a desire to see such a holiday. In 1907, Ms. Jarvis arranged a memorial service at her mother s church in West Virginia on the second anniversary of her mother s death. Ms. Jarvis worked to promote a national holiday through public speaking and writing letters to politicians, businessmen, and clergy until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother s Day. God makes it clear that mothers are to be respected. The fifth commandment to honor fathers and mothers carries the promise of a long and fruitful life for the nation as a reward. According to the law, anyone who struck or cursed his or her parents was put to death. In the New Testament Jesus modeled obedience, respect, and honor in his relationship with his mother. God compares his love for Israel to a mother s love. Even if it were possible for a mother to forget her nursing child, he would never forget his people (Isaiah 49:15). As Jesus grieved over Jerusalem s rejection of its Messiah, he said he had often wanted to gather his people together as a mother hen protects her chicks under her wings (Matthew 23:37). In God we have the perfect parent. No matter what our relationship with our earthly mother, we can be assured that our heavenly Father loves us with a perfect mother love.
