December 3, 2017 1st Sunday of Advent Page 3 Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Dear Parishioners: "Stay awake!... Be prepared." The advice is clear enough. We'd like to be vigilant. We'd like to be ready. But on its own, the desire to be alert isn't necessarily enough to keep us from drifting off into a spiritual siesta. When the ultimate Advent comes--when Jesus returns--we don't want to be the one left standing alone in the field. Please consider attending our Parish Mission as a way to stay focused on welcoming Christ; Jesus asks us to be ready to greet Him at any hour Fr. Cedric will be speaking at all Masses on Sunday, December 10th. Plan on attending our Reconciliation Service on Tuesday, December 11th. Father Cedric, a Passionist Priest, is a wonderful speaker..you won t be disappointed. Yours in Christ, Father Brian T. Bell Middle School Youth! Come and join us for the following Edge Events: 12/4 - "Lord Help Me" (Monday from 6pm to 7:30pm in the Parish Hall) -How can you ask others for help? How can you help others? What are some ways you can ask for Heavenly help as a middle schooler? 12/11 - "Red Carpet" (Monday from 6pm to 7:30pm in the Parish Hall) - What is adoration? Why does God deserve your adoration? What are some ways you can adore God as a middle schooler? December 3, 2017 First Sunday of Advent Faith Formation News Sacrament classes (Second, Third and Heritage) are now closed. All other grade level classes remain open all year. Easter is early this year, so it is very important that all children receiving sacraments are here every week as we have less class time to prepare for reception of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. First Reconciliation for all second graders will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 @ 10:00am. Confirmation and First Communion will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018. All Catholic Grade School children seeking to celebrate sacraments at St. Bernard s in the spring only need to register for the second semester, beginning in January. The fee will be $35.00 per student. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or you would like to be a catechist for Faith Formation, please contact me at kstine@stboc.org or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God s Blessings, Kathie SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING Thank you to all who have updated their training! All volunteers are required to take Safe Environment training every year or every other year depending on the ministry you serve in. The year runs from July 1st through June 30th. If you are a volunteer and have not taken the Foundation Course, Protecting God s Children you need to go online to www.safeenvironmenttraining.org website and register for a foundation class. If you have had the foundation course you may update each year online or in person. Just go to the same website and click on MY OBLIGA- TIONS and follow the directions. You will view a short video; make sure you watch all the way through the credits, until it tells you that you have completed the training. If you choose to take in person click on register for classes and find a parish giving the renewal video, Keeping the Promise Alive 2017. If you have any difficulties please do not hesitate to call Kathie at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843 ex 309. We need to have compliance by the end of this year for 2017. Thanks for helping us keep our Faith Environment a Safe Environment for all and thank you for your continued service in the Church. Society of Saint Vincent de Paul ***Christmas Angel Tree Gift Drive*** The Christmas Angel Tree will be standing in the Main Entrance Hall of St. Bernard s Church from Saturday, December 2, through Sunday, December 17. Each Christmas Angel bears the name, age, gender, and gift requests of an underprivileged child. This year the children are from our own Parish; the inner city Phoenix Parishes of St. Catherine of Sienna, St. Mark, and St. Martin de Porres; and Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Aguila, AZ. Please take an Angel tag and try to match the description of the child and the gift(s) as best as you can. All gifts should be returned wrapped and with the Christmas Angel attached. We will collect the gifts at each Mass the weekend of December 16 and 17, 2017. Thank you on behalf of all the children you are helping during this season of sharing.
