youth group WITH THE LORD dave s desk EXPECTANT WAITING Among the lists on our family refrigerator is a list of expectant mothers that we pray for regularly. I know with each of these women expecting a baby, there is just that - an expectation. There is an expectation that with the birth of her child, she will get to hold the precious baby in her arms. There is an expectation that with the birth of her child her life will be different. A mother knows the reality of waiting for the birth of her baby. It requires patience. It requires making choices that are best for the baby in her womb. With the season of Advent upon us, we enter into a period of expectant waiting. An expectant mother can teach us a lot about how to wait for Christmas. It requires patience and making choices that are the best for our spiritual lives. Advent is a word used to speak of a coming or an arrival. There are three comings of Christ that we should be attentive to: History, Mystery & Majesty. The Christ Child did come in history as a newborn infant in Bethlehem. We celebrate this every year on Dec. 25. He came as a newborn so that He might be completely approachable to all classes of people from the shepherds to the Magi. We also know that there will come a day, unknown to us, that Christ will come again in majesty. We profess at every Sunday Mass in the Creed: He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. And in the prayer following the Our Father, the priest says, we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. What about His coming in mystery? This is for each of us to individually recognize Him in the here and now. He comes in the sacraments, in the Scriptures, in our daily prayer and through others. In our Sunday Gospel reading, Jesus gives us a caution as we prepare for Him. Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. Maybe we need to see Advent as an adventure through which we fully expect to encounter Jesus Christ. We need to be vigilant to prayer so that the anxieties of daily life don t prevent us from growing closer to Jesus Christ in our daily life. As a daily foundation for prayer, I find the daily Mass readings very helpful to reflect on, particularly the Gospel. I suggest going to www.dailycatholicgospel.com to sign up for daily reflections from Bishop Robert Barron. From there you can also read the daily Mass readings online. Also you can find the readings listed on the lower left corner of pg. 1 of the bulletin. I wish you all a holy Advent season that is full of expectation to experience the comings of Jesus Christ! faith fitness IMMACULATE CONCEPTION catholic BOOKRACK In our bulletin last week about the Mass times for the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8, which is a Holy Day of Obligation, it was noted that "the obligation is not transferred." What does that mean? Say, for instance, that the feast of the Assumption, Aug. 15, were to fall on a Saturday or Monday. It remains a holy day but the obligation to attend Mass that day is dispensed. However, because Mary, the Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States of America, the obligation to attend Mass remains to mark this very special feast day for us. We have two Mass time options at All Saints and Sacred Heart parishes for the Immaculate Conception. There will be a vigil Mass on Fri. Dec. 7 at Sacred Heart Parish in Lapwai at 5:30 pm. The Mass for the Immaculate Conception here at All Saints Parish will be Saturday, Dec. 8 at 9 am. As a review, the Catechism of the Catholic Church lists five precepts of the Church, the first of which deals with the obligation to attend Mass. Paragraph 2042: The first precept ("You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor") requires the faithful to sanctify the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord as well as the principal liturgical feasts honoring the mysteries of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints; in the place, by participating in the Eucharistic celebration, in which the Christian community is gathered, and by resting from those works and activities which could impede such a sanctification of these days. Advent and Christmas Devotionals for all ages are now at the bookrack. Bibles, books, and CDs also make great gifts for Christmas! Take a look at the wide variety of selections! What does the Catechism say about the Immaculate Conception? Paragraph 491: Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. This is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854: The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin. The Knights of Columbus annual Christmas Caroling to area care centers will be on Sunday, Dec. 2. If you are interested in joining them, please meet at 4 pm at the east parking area of All Saints Church. Following caroling, supper will be provided in the parish social hall. all saints parish CALENDARS All Saints is happy to once again this year offer to you a free of charge 2019 calendar.
