A Message from FR. Rob. Dear Brother Knights: September is upon us. Hopefully the summer has provided opportunities to spend time with family and friends and perhaps to venture off a bit and see some new parts of the world. Our new executive has been installed and the council year awaits. Let me remind you of what Fr. McGivney intended when he started the Knights: a group of catholic gentlemen who would meet together as brothers, to deepen their catholic faith and find ways to live it out in the midst of their family, their parish and their wider community. The challenge is to keep bettering ourselves, answering the call of discipleship and being generous with our time and talents. May each Knight answer the call to be an integral part of the work of the council. Get involved and offer your input and your muscles. We need every member to contribute in some meaningful way. Paying your dues is just the start. If it that s where it ends, you are not living up to the tenets of membership. Everyone is essential and every pair of hands is necessary. In Peace, Fr. Rob A Message from the Grand Knight Worthy Brother Knights: Welcome back to each of my Worthy Brothers! I hope you had a well rested and joyous summer! Whether it is vacationing, camping or just relaxing around the pool, summer is a great time to enjoy with friends and family. Myself, this year, I was not that fortunate. As most of you heard I had a major program at one of the plants where you could say, I brought my sleeping bag in for rest. Anyway, Fall is on the way and we have a lot to do! Well another fraternal year has started and with it some changes to our executive council. Once again, I am the Grand Knight for our great council 8919! I hope I can still earn your respect as was last year. I am hoping we can keep the meetings short and to the point. Eventually I would like to see more members attending our meetings and sharing their input as well. We have had changes to our executive and I would also like to welcome in and congratulate our new executive members for the 2018/2019 fraternal year. Please welcome in your new Deputy Grand Knight, Allen Topliff, who replaces Noah Berthiaume. Other changes to the executive are; Mike Agius, who will now become your Warden, replacing Frank Pellarin, Jerry Laforet who is done as our 3 rd year Trustee will now become Lecturer, and stepping up to first year Trustee is Mike Charbonneau. Another big change is our Financial Secretatary. Moving into this position is David Algudady replacing Bob Cayea, who really deserves retirement! Thanks again Bob for all you do! Also, welcome back to all retuning executives. I would also like to give a friendly reminder that meetings are as follows; all General meetings are the first Tuesday of every month while the Executive meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month. Each meeting will start at 7:30 pm following mass. As I said a year ago, I am reaching out to our members that normally do not come to the meetings to please come out and see what we are doing. To all members that usually attend; if you see a knight that has not come to a meeting for a while, ask him to come and better yet let s find out September 3, 2018 2

why he is not coming. Maybe we can help him come to one. You never know what we might be doing that night if you don t come. This year will be full changes. One of the first big changes is from Supreme and it has to do with our Surge with Service programs. They have now changed it to Faith in Action, where it is a bit more streamlined and some directors may find additional areas under their leadership. Not to fear though, the chairmen and now the assistants or better yet, alternate directors can help in accommodating the changes. Supreme is also enforcing the Safe Environment policies for each council. As a friendly reminder, if you are giving your time to work with any youth involved programs, or, would want to work on one of our youth programs, I would encourage you to check out the K of C website and look at the Safe Environment Policy. You can find it at www.kofc.org and search for Safe Environment. Either way Brothers, we will get through it! There are some Director positions that still need to be filled. To the program Directors that already know their position, I am asking each of you to select an Assistant Director or better yet an Alternate Director to help in your program. The assistant will not substitute for the chairman of each committee, but rather help collect reports and substitute for you in meetings when you are not available. Directors are still responsible for each of their program committees and chairmen. I would like to still bring back the Phone Committee. We still need to reach out to all members who have not been to a meeting and importantly the ones without internet access, and to see how they are doing. We need a Chair for the Committee. Also we are looking for volunteers to help the Chair make calls- Approx (8) Captains. We want these member s ideas and or concerns. We want all to come out and participate with us. Again, I would like to touch on membership and getting new members. If you see a potential person, ask him if he would like to become a knight. If he says no, ask him why. We would like to find out these reasons so we can be prepared to answer back to these comments during a membership drive. And yes, we are planning for membership drives too. If the individual says yes, I would like to be a knight, then be his sponsor and show him the great things we do for the community and church. Don t forget to wear your ASK ME buttons. We have more available. Remember Supreme has given us a valuable tool called E- membership. Direct the potential candidate to visit and sign up on line. Our Executive had it s installation on August 28 th at our Parish. Thank you for all that attended. And thank you all you cake eaters! I would not have known what to do with all that left over cake. And as a plug in, don t forget about our Coats for Kids Fundraiser being held this September 16 th starting at 11:30 am. If you want to help out please call! To all, let me know how we are doing. If you have any ideas and or comments, please feel free to contact me by either phoning and or texting me at 519 551-8061 (leave a message, if I don t pick up) or by e-mail at tbirdrules50@gmail.com. Hope to see you soon at our meetings! Vivat Jesus Dave Orosz GK 8919 September 3, 2018 3

District Deputy Report: Worthy Brother Knights, It is getting closer to that time of the year when after a rest we prepare to do council work. Your meetings in July and August were your planning months so when September comes around you are ready at the starting line, all anxious to take off. So Mr. Starter are you ready? Yes, well fire the gun and let s get moving. Most of you will host a Council picnic or BBQ to start, but you know we do start off with a bang.coats for Kids Soccer Shoot-out at Council, District and Regional levels,.,,..then Halloween and before we know it, Thanksgiving and the shops start to advertise Christmas. For us we again have some programs..substance Abuse..Keep Christ in Christmas colouring contest and Advent the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. Of course, we also have Recruitment Drives at your Parishes. Christmas provides no time for us to rest because in the New Year which was part of your Autumn planning is the Basketball Free Throw, and again another Church Drive to recruit new members If you did not start planning in July and August you will now be having problems because you are attempting Catch Up. NOT EASY January is the time when you need to take stock of your events how many have we done, were they worth while, and have we followed the FAITH IN ACTION format. Please make sure you read the Faith IN Action literature because it might result in your Council not qualifying for any Awards. Councils. To the new members coming onto the Executive, to you Thank you your council will only grow because we hope that your new ideas will create new programs which we do need. The world is changing so fast and technology we just cannot keep up with BUT the youth in our Councils will pick up on this and we hope they will show us older members the way forward. To you all I am looking forward to working with you and your Councils and it would be great if some of you were able to become STAR councils. Vivat Jesus. Alan Sims, DD # 76 and # 10. Deputy Grand Knight Report Well brothers we re ready to start a new fraternal year. The old program guide Surge for Service has been replaced with the new Faith in Action. There will more on this from both myself and our Grand Knight at general meeting. We are still going to be doing many of the same programs we have done and maybe adding some new and interesting ones. With recruitment and insurance still being high priority. I am looking forward to assisting our council in doing the orders great work. We are so still looking for a brother to become the next Deputy Grand Knight, who will then. go on to become Grand Knight. So please consider taking on this role as a council leader. To the old members who have stepped Fraternally down from the Executive THANK YOU for all the good work you have done for your Allen Topliffe, DGK September 3, 2018 4

Thank You for Your tender mercies. Thank You for giving us friends and family to share joys and sorrows with. I ask you to bless my friends; relatives, my brothers and sisters in Christ, and those I care deeply for who are reading this right now. Where there is joy, give them continued joy. Parish Family Fun Day: Sunday June 24 th, the parish hosted the annual Family Fun Day in the parish parking lot and in the Family Center. Many of our Brother Knights volunteered to help set up the outdoor events, cook hotdogs, and clean-up. The day saw fun filled events such as Bingo, food, outdoor events, and live music performed by Brother Knights Camilo and David Pare. Thank you to all our Brother knights who gave their time to assist in making this a tremendous day for our parish and community. Dave Orosz, Grand Knight September 3, 2018 6

Council 8919 Bursaries: K of C Council 8919 : Bursary Awards 2018 The selection committee consists of three brother knights: Peter Fitzgerald, Gerry Clement and John Barron. On Saturday, June 30th, the committee reviewed four well written applications. Our mandate was to select two awards of $750. We did not reach consensus on the first vote. However, after further review, two applicants were selected, the first to Lauren Orosz and the second to Sinan Al Najjar. Each will attend the University of Windsor in September 2018. Recipients have been invited to the 10:00 AM Mass, July 8th, to receive their Awards. Thank you to Fr. Rob for allowing us to acknowledge these fine individuals during our Sunday Service and Robin Orosz for maintaining the applications and for advertising. Respectfully submitted, Brother John Barron, PGK Bursary Chairman. September 3, 2018 7

Bottle Drive for Special Olympics: On July 7th, 2018 Council 8919 conducted our bi-annual Bottle Drive for Special Olympics at Our Lady of the Atonement Parish - St. Francis Hall, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. This marks the 5th year our council has participated in this fundraising event for such a worthy cause. As in previous years we advertised this event in our local Snapd paper and requested a photographer come to cover the event. We also posted flyers on the Community Boards in two of our local Zehr's stores. We sent an electronic copy of the flyer to each of the Councils in District 76 asking they advertise it with their membership, in addition to sending out to our own membership via email notification. We also posted a flyer in our parish and Family Center. In each of the previous years, one of our Brother Knights graciously provided his van and had made arrangements with the local Beer Store to deliver the donations during the following week. Unfortunately due to mechanical issues, we were required to find alternative means. Another Brother Knight John Sabga with assistance of Br. Leo Viselli made 3 separate trips during the day of the event to drop off portions of the collections. A word of thanks to Brothers Mike Agius, Denis Robillard and Mike Charbonneau who also spent time on this past Saturday, assisting in sorting and packing bottles for returns. Thanks also Fr. Rob Rochelleau for allowing us to use St. Francis Hall to store and sort the donations as they came in. This year through the generosity of our members, parishioners and community, we were able to raise $190.45 which will be sent to Special Olympics Ontario later this month. Dan Pergolesi, PGK Special Olympics Chairman Council 8919 September 3, 2018 8

Fr. Rob Rocheleau celebrated Mass at 7:00 PM, then joined our Council members in the Installation ceremony, providing a blessing to our incoming Executive, as well as blessing the Council jewels. This years Executive is relatively unchanged from last year. Some slight moves, Mike Agius from Guard to Warden; Mike Charbonneau from Lecturor to Trustee; Jerry Laforet from Trustee to Lecturor. Youth Directors Report: 2018 Soccer Penalty Kick Challenge H.J. Lassaline This year the school soccer challenge competitions elimination s rounds were held on Monday June 18 th 2018 at H.J. Lassaline. There were 30 students that participated. We had two 12-year old students that finished in a tie for first place. However due to the fields were bad shape (wet & Muddy) and no time available it was decided that the two 12-year old students receive first place award. We were scheduled at L.A. Desmarais for Monday June 20 th to conduct the school soccer challenge competitions elimination s they also had 30 students to participate but unfortunately it was rained out. I spoke to the Principal and agreed to reschedule for Monday June 25 th. Same time. The principal told me that if it does rain on Monday June 25 th they have to cancel the soccer challenge competitions for this year. She said that the end of June is near and the students still have too much going on, it would be impossible for her to reschedule. June 26 th ---- Both schools completed their soccer challenge competitions elimination s for this year. Thank you to the following Brother Knights who assisted In the competition this year. Michael Agius, Keith Campbell, Ken Bondy, Greg MacDonald, Denis Walsh, Bob Haslam Eduardo Aguillar Youth Director K of C Choir Now that summer is over, you have more spare time on Your hands and you know what they say, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop". If you do not want to be a part of the devil's workshop, then I have a great way to occupy some of your time. Join the Knights of Columbus Choir and try and sing your way to heaven. We practice on Mondays, the week prior to our scheduled mass and we sing roughly twice a month at the 10 a.m. Sunday mass. It is a great group of gentlemen who are members of the choir who I know will make you feel right at home. Remember: He who sings, prays twice. JOIN US! Remember: He who sings Prays twice. Report from the 4 th Degree Greetings Brother Knights, Many have asked, Why should I join the 4 th Degree. I have elected to use information from an existing pamphlet to share some insight to this degree. The Strength of Nations Depends upon Strength of Character. For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man, That s what the Knights of Columbus is all about, And for those who are called to take it one step further, the Fourth Degree is the way. Standing Firm in Support of the Order Fourth Degree Knights are dedicated to the personal development and continued honor of brother Knights. We are always there to offer leadership, guidance, and encouragement whether it is through educational programs or honoring those who are no longer with us. Fourth Degree Knights are integral to the preservation of the Order. Proudly Serving the Country Fourth Degree Knights glorify God By serving our communities and nations as though Christ were the one being served. We foster patriotism by teaching personal responsibility in civic affairs, working to honor and protect symbols of national pride, honoring veterans for tier service and sacrifice, and Fourth Degree Knights maintain a leadership role on important moral issues, recognizing that what a man stands for, defines him. the life of the Church. Fourth Degree Knights are committed to building lives of character. Honoring the Legacy of Knighthood The Color Corps is an elective division of the Fourth Degree, whose distinctive presence in parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and Catholic functions is a visible reminder of our service to the community. Color Corp members wear the colors with pride and honor, knowing they represent the very best of the Knights of Columbus. The Time Is Now The need for strong role models has never been greater. If the sanctity of life, family values, and true religious freedom are to survive, democratic nations need greater commitment from people of faith. That s what the Fourth Degree represents. We are the pinnacle of Knighthood. We live, serve and protect the Truth. If you are a Third Degree Knight in good standing, it s time for you to consider reaching even further with your faith. It is time to consider the Fourth Degree. I encourage any Third Degree member to put serious consideration into joining the ranks of the 4 th. We hold only one Exemplification per year. This year the event will be held in St. Thomas on Saturday November 17 th, 2018. This is an all day event, however your wives are welcome to attend as there is a Lady s program during the time of the event, with a Mass and Banquet to follow. Unwavering in Support of the Faith We are in a time when too few Christians If you are interested in hearing more, please are prepared to speak up for what they contact me, or any of our 4 th Degree believe. Fourth Degree Knights hold members. unwaveringly to what is right and honorable. This means working to keep God in the civic Vivat Jesus, arena. It means supporting and defending SK Dan E. Pergolesi : laws that recognize the sanctity of life and Faithful Navigator true religious liberty. And of course, serving RT. Rev. Wilfrid J. Langlois September 3, 2018 Assembly 1789. 11

New Membership Growth Incentives In July we announced a Fast Start incentive to reward Brother Knights who recruited 5 or more new members before September 30. Life Matters Andrew J. Despins, Knights of Columbus Insurance The Knights of Columbus believes in helping you keep your promises. That s why we have K of C Care Long Term Care Insurance. Long-term care services can devastate a family s finances and seriously deplete funds you have saved for retirement, or for your heirs. Fortunately, there is a way to help avoid this from happening. This important product is the answer you have been waiting for. Long Term Care Insurance would pay in the event you reach a point in your life that you need assisted living support. This money would give you the power to choose the type of support you want instead of opting for the support you or your family can afford. Many people, if they had the option, would choose to stay in their homes during their declining years, or move to an upscale retirement community. Unfortunately, due to the financial impact on their hard earned estates, they are unable to exercise these options. Long Term Care Insurance ensures that when the time comes, you have given yourself every option and eliminated the burden you could be on your family. I urge all members to take full advantage of your Knights of Columbus membership. Call me today to discuss how Knights of Columbus products and services can help you and your family. Ways to Pay for Whole Life We live in a world of options and we are constantly bombarded by choices. Some of these make our lives more complicated, but many of these choices are created with our satisfaction in mind. When I present an option to you, it s because a team of experts has discussed it at length to be certain it serves your best interest. We have a few options on how you can provide and pay for the whole life coverage that your family needs. Many whole life policies call for premiums to be paid for your entire life or to age 100. But we also offer permanent life coverage with guaranteed cash values (and the potential to earn dividends, which are not guaranteed) through policies that offer a limited period of premium payments. First, we offer 10 Pay Life and 20 Pay Life. Consider paying premiums for 10 or 20 years, and never having to pay for the coverage again. The plan is paid up and no more premiums are due. The plan stays in force, the death benefit remains intact and the guaranteed cash value continues to grow. A plan with similar benefits is Life Paid Up at 65. The difference over 10 or 20 Pay Life plans is that this permanent product requires you to pay premiums until age 65. Then, premiums stop (just in time for retirement), but the plan remains in force.
