St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 From the Pastor Please note the changes in the Mass schedule that take place beginning October 1. There will be a 12:05 Mass on both Monday and Thursday as well as a 9:00 a.m. Mass on Saturday. Already we have exceptions, though. This Thursday and next (October 11), the students will be coming for Mass at 8:05. Therefore, there will be no 8:05 Mass on Friday, October 5, or Friday, October 12. Head Count. During the month of October, the diocese asks us to take a head count at all the Masses. The ushers will be tallying the attendance. These numbers are used by the diocese to identify trends in church participation. Here are our trends from 2001 to 2011. Total membership in the parish has dropped by 169 in the years between 2001 2011. In other words, our membership has remained fairly stable. On the other hand, during that same time frame, our weekly Mass attendance has dropped by almost 600 people. That s a lot! If you know of someone who has stopped coming to church on a regular basis, please take the initiative to invite him/her back. If that person would like to talk to one of the priests, please let us know. ACSA. By now, every household should have received the material for the Annual Catholic Services Appeal. Please make your pledge. Again, our current goal is over $63K. Any donation above our assigned goal will be returned to the parish. Liturgy of the Hours. With Fr. Ted s departure to Quincy, the friars have decided to return to the chapel for morning and evening prayer. You are welcome to join us. Morning prayer begins at 11:45; evening prayer at 4:45. Both last about 15 minutes. The friars try to gather a little bit ahead of time for some silent reflection and you are welcome to join us for that, as well. October Events. There s a lot happening in October, and I don t want you to miss any of it. Here are some highlights: 3. Transitus (Passing) of St. Francis, 7:00 pm 4. Feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of our parish Day of Prayer for Life with Eucharistic Adoration 11. Year of Faith begins (more information coming) Day of Prayer for Life with Eucharistic Adoration 21. World Mission Sunday 28. Priesthood Sunday 50th Anniversary of Fr. Vernon s ordination, 10:30 Peace and every good, Fr. John, OFM Transitus of St. Francis On Thursday, October 4th, we will celebrate the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron of our parish. He is honored for his tremendous love of God, his imitation of Jesus and his care for the poor, especially those with the disease of leprosy. For centuries Franciscans (priests, brothers, sisters, and Secular Franciscans) have gathered on the evening before the feast to celebrate his death, that is, his transitus (passing) from life on earth to eternal life. This year the Transitus will be held on Wednesday evening, October 3rd, beginning at 7:00 pm. You are invited to join us for this commemoration of St. Francis death and then come to the friary for refreshments. A New Arrival: The Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help would like to introduce to you the newest member of our household. Sr. Erlinda Gurule most recently comes from El Paso, Texas where she ministered to the Spanish people. She has been a teacher in Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Colorado. She is second oldest in a family of 14. She just recently, 31 st of August, celebrated a birthday. S. Erlinda is bi-lingual and treasures her Spanish heritage and culture. She grew up in New Mexico where members of her family still reside. You will find her to be quiet, reserved and positive in her outlook. We are blessed she is with us. Dear Brothers in Christ As Catholic men, we are called to a life of service. We are called to care for our families, serve our communities and serve our faith communities. I am excited to share with you that a great and wonderful opportunity exists for Catholic men to answer this call to serve by becoming a member of the Knights of Columbus. This exemplary order of Catholic men was founded in 1882 by a parish priest who had the vision and foresight to conceive of an organization which would provide Catholic men the opportunity to live their Faith through charitable works, caring for their families and defending the Catholic Faith. Today, the Knights of Columbus are 1.8 million members strong in 14 countries, providing a strong moral example in an age where culture promotes secularism over service to others. Last year, this organization of practical Catholic men donated more than $158 million and 70 million man-hours to charity, in addition to providing its members with the opportunity to share a fraternal brotherhood with men of similar values. As a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, I have personally witnessed the tremendous work that these men accomplish in this diocese. However, there is much work which needs to be done in the name of charity. I strongly encourage each man in the diocese, who considers himself to be a practicing Catholic and is at least 18 years old, to prayerfully consider joining the ranks of this fine organization. Members of the Knights of Columbus will be in parishes after Masses during weekends of October with more information. Please take some time to visit with one of these men, so that you may join us in our mission to promote Charity, Unity, Fraternity and patriotism. I promise you the experience of a lifetime. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki, Bishop of Springfield in Illinois,

Gentle St. Francis you were so devoted to the humanity of Christ. Your heart burst with appreciation toward God for taking on human life. You saw beauty and goodness in all living things - in birds that sing, the fish that fill our waters, and all that lives in nature. Help us to imitate your reverence for life wherever it may be. Especially, humble Francis of Assisi, help us to help others to see the worth of each living, unborn baby sheltered in its mother's womb. May all mankind have the grace to understand that these tiny, budding lives have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Jr. Joe Carlos to be Inducted into KC Hall of Fame Fr.
