I ll be in Las Cruces the weekend of December 7/8 attending the state council mid-year meeting. We re still counting but, hopefully, I ll be able to turn in the full proceeds from the selling of our allotment of 600 lottery tickets for the state council general raffle. Once again, council members volunteered their time and talent to help make both the parish s annual turkey bingo and holiday bazaar successful while at the same time enabling us to make money selling food and drinks at these events. Despite inclement weather, attendance was good and we were able to utilize our bingo console and flashboard for the first time at the turkey bingo. The council donated the grand prize for the bingo - this time it was a Nexus 7 notepad instead of a flat-screen TV. We also took the opportunity to sell state council raffle tickets at these events. No family potluck this month but council Knights will be supporting the parish s Keep Christ in Christmas celebration and providing breakfast burritos after Our Lady of Guadalupe feast day Mass on December 12 th. Our council meeting is on the same day, so check out the council program director s entry below for planning details. Last year, council members who are 4 th Degree Sir Knights attended Christmas Midnight Mass in full regalia where we served as lector, EM and ushers. Hope we can do the same this year; perhaps establish a tradition here at Holy Child parish. There is a 4 th Degree exemplification scheduled for January 19, 2014 in Albuquerque. There are a number of you 3 rd Degree council members who are ready to become Sir Knights. Some of you need a little nudge, others need to be invited. Stand-by, you ll be hearing from us... Heads up! Ten Knights and their spouses from our council attended Tomas Tenorio Council 10835 s annual Valentine s Day dinner and dance in Moriarty earlier this year to help them out with their ticket sales. We had a 2

Below is the meeting and events schedule for the last month of the 2013 calendar year. Please retain and post where you can be reminded in time to attend these events. December 4 th & 18 th Good Shepherd 12 th Our Lady of Guadalupe Breakfast Burritos 12 th Council Meeting 17 th Light up for Christ 24 th 4 th Degree Midnight- Mass No family potluck in Dec! MERRY CHRISTMAS Good Shepherd meal assistance Every other Wednesday. Meet at Holy Child Church parking lot between 2:00 and 2:15pm December 4th and 18th blast and I asked council 10835 to let us know about next year s dance. Just got word that their dance is scheduled for Saturday, Feb 15, 2014 and they set aside 40 tickets for our council; Al Hurricane and his band will be playing again. More to come... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Vivat Jesus! Rich Favela Council 12981 Grand Knight Service Directors Notes & Reminders From Program Director Carl Housman: To all service program directors: A reminder to get your November reports to the GK for his review before the council meeting on Thursday, December 12 th. From Membership Director John Ortega: A potential new member recruited by PGK/SK Richard Garcia and Joe Lesch filled out a Form 100 during the parish holiday bazaar. The admissions committee needs to interview the candidate ASAP; GK will be sending out an e-mail to committee members regarding the candidate. From Community Director Joe Garcia: A year ago this month, we started volunteering to help serve the evening meal to the homeless at the Good Shepherd Center in Albuquerque. Every other Wednesday since then, council members have carpooled into the city at 2:30 p.m. to participate for a couple of hours in this charitable work of mercy. The staff at the center appreciates our help and look forward to us being there as do the homeless who consume the meals. They open the door at 3:15 p.m. and for the next 45 minutes; the tempo is intense and hectic as up to 300 hungry folks show-up to eat a hot meal in a crowded dining room that can seat 125. You feel good and a little tired when you turn in your apron after they close the door at 4:00 p.m. Some of our volunteers have brought their sons to help out and learn a lesson in life in return. Some of our wives have expressed an interest in accompanying us as volunteers and we ll be looking into making that happen next year. Remember, every other 3

Wednesday beginning at 2:15 p.m. in the parish parking lot... From Couple for Life Director Vince Amatucci: As most of you know by now, the proposed Paincapable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance was defeated in the Albuquerque run-off election held on November 19 th. Pro-life supporters in New Mexico aren t giving up and will lobby the state legislature early next year to pass reasonable laws to curb abortion excesses. From Family Director Tom DeBlaay: Our thoughts and prayers go out to brother Carl Housman and his family on the death of carl s father David, who passed away on November 17 th after a long illness. Funeral services were private. I ll be circulating a volunteer sign-up sheet for next calendar year s council family potluck roster at this month s council meeting. From Church Director Richard Perseo: We sent our monthly check to Aidan Toombs at the Benedictine Monastery for November as part of our participation in the RSVP program on his behalf. Our deceased Knights memorial Mass was celebrated on Sunday, November 17 th, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass which coincided with our corporate communion Sunday. We also have a query into the POC for the annual April KofC sponsored men s retreat at the Pecos Monastery regarding a conflict in the date of the next retreat. More to follow. The KofC encourages each council to host a Light Up for Christ event on the first Tuesday in December. Our council integrates this event with the parish s Keep Christ in Christmas ceremony which will be held this year on the third Tuesday in December. The Knights will provide hot chocolate and cookies afterwards in San Jose Hall. From Youth Program Director Carl Housman: Working with the GK on scheduling and publicizing a KofC free-throw competition in January. From Council Director Pat McDaniel: Last month, Brother Carl Housman and I made a final, concerted effort to troubleshoot and fix the bingo console and flashboard we bought at auction last year. 4

By process of elimination, we found that there was a second connector wire missing and when we hooked one up, the flashboard started working! We informed the GK a week before the parish s Turkey Bingo and he and Brother Harold Traurig hustled to design, buy the materials and construct a portable cradle to securely hold up the flashboard which we were then able to use at the Turkey Bingo. We will replace a micro switch and the blower motor to make it fully functional in time for our council s bingo event early next year. The GK and Harold subsequently installed lockable casters to make it transportable and we found space to store it in the storeroom behind the church. We are looking for a brother Knight to learn how to use the console and become our council s bingo caller at our bingo event in the Spring. Anyone interested in volunteering? As this newsletter goes to print, we re totaling up the proceeds from the sale of our council s allotment of 600 state general raffle tickets. We get to keep half of the proceeds and we hope to add $300 to our treasury. We are still totaling up the expenses from our food concessions at last month s Turkey Bingo and parish holiday bazaar and we may have cleared between $300 and $400 I ll have the final figure at this month s council meeting. Finally, our council provides free breakfast burritos to Holy Child parishioners who attend Fr. Granito s traditional 6:00 a.m. Mass on December 12 th to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our council meeting is that night so we don t have the opportunity to discuss the burrito making beforehand. PGK/SK Richard Garcia and his crack kitchen team will handle the burrito making but we ll need a few Knights to help out with the coffee making and clean-up. We have burrito ingredients left over from the holiday bazaar which will help keep our expenses down. Copyright 2013 Holy Child Council 12981, Knights of Columbus. All Rights Reserved. 5
