THE ORDER OF SERVICE I. WE PREPARE TO MEET OUR LORD THE INVOCATION We invoke ( call upon ) the name of our Triune God. PASTOR: We begin our Savior s Divine Service today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ALL: OPENING HYMN: #243 [Red Hymnal] CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SINS We come before God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness. P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, begging Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the LORD! P: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess to You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. Therefore, we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. ALL: O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy on us and for His sake grant us forgiveness of all our sins: and by Your Holy Spirit, increase in us true knowledge of You and Your will, with true obedience to Your Word. Until the end, that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen! P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy on us and has given His only Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He calls them children of God and promises to them the Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized will be saved. Grant this Lord to us all! 2 P a g e

II. WE PRAISE OUR LORD THE GLORIA PATRI Glory to the Father (Red Hymnal, pg 16) THE KYRIE O Lord (Red Hymnal, pg 17) THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS "Glory to God in the highest" (Red Hymnal, pg 17) Glory be to God on high: And on earth peace, good will toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, That takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen! PASTOR: The Lord be with you. PASTOR: Let us pray: (Pastor says the prayer of the day) 3 P a g e

III. OUR LORD SPEAKS TO US 1 ST SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ PSALM 126 What do you meditate about on the way to God s house? This song of ascents sung on the way to church (the temple) is a Psalm that asked the LORD to remind them of His presence with them and presents for them. It is a prayer for the spiritual restoration of our joy in the LORD! 1 A song of ascents. When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. 2 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, "The LORD has done great things for them." 3 The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. 4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev. 5 Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. 2 ND SCRIPTURE LESSON ~ LUKE 22:24-30 The disciples (again) argued about who was the greatest among them. Jesus uses this opportunity to point out to them (and to us) that God s kingdom is about serving others, not being served. And serving in God s kingdom for the good of others comes with eternal rewards! 24 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' 26 "But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 "For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves. 28 "But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. 29 "And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one 4 P a g e

upon Me, 30 "that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel." OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH ~ THE APOSTLE S CREED The Apostles Creed is a summary of Christian faith as taught by the Apostles. We boldly confess what God has taught us to believe. I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN S SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY: #794 [Tan Supplement] But Jesus said, Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. " ~Matthew 19:14 AUDIO/VIDEO IN CRYROOM FOR PARENTS WITH CHILDREN WHO NEED A BRIEF REMINDER SERMON MEDITATION read/watch sermons and services online at www.fdllutheran.org Jesus said, " Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" ~Luke 11:28 Revelation 22:12-21 12 "And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work. 13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." 14 Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. 16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star." 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" And let him who thirsts come. Whoever 5 P a g e

desires, let him take the water of life freely. 18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. The SON is the Source of all Life 1. What potentially dam(n)s us from God s tree of life? a. Encouragement for Personal & Family Devotions - Individual and family devotions are certainly among the most important uses of our time every day. God tells us that through His Word He offers us guidance and direction (Psalm 119:105), hope (Psalm 119:114), understanding (Psalm 119:169) and comfort (Psalm 119:50). Through His Word He also revives (Psalm 119:154), gives Life (1 Peter 1:23) and salvation (James 1:21). Shouldn t we then make the reading of God s Word a priority in our daily lives, knowing we have these promises from God through His Word? 9 P a g e

As we begin a new church year we will be including the Scripture readings for the following Sunday in the bulletin every Sunday, Lord willing. This has a twofold purpose: 1) First as a tool for you to use in devotions and an encouragement to make reading God s Word a regular part of your life. 2) Second purpose is to familiarize you with the Scripture readings which we will be using in church the next Sunday. This devotional insert will include a general theme for our worship service the following week, hymns which you can use in your family devotions, and a brief summary of each Scripture reading. Setting aside a few minutes a few days each week to read and meditate on these verses will be a blessing for you and your family and help you get more out of the Sunday morning service. Looking ahead to Sunday Devotions - Next Sunday is the First Sunday in Advent (the beginning of the church year). Our readings for this Sunday reveal the purpose of the coming of Jesus who is the King of kings, and encourages us to properly prepare for His coming through faith in the salvation He brings. And by proclaiming His coming to the world. Gospel Reading: Luke 19:29-40 - Jesus came to conquer our mortal enemies once and for all though His death on Calvary. The people praised God for the salvation He accomplished through His Son. This message needs to be heard by the world. Jesus came once for our salvation and is coming again to judge the world. Lives will be lost, eternally. Jesus, and the redemption He won is the one thing that every sinner needs. Are you ready and willing to publicly proclaim the coming of your King to the people in your life? TLH 160. Psalm 45:1-7 - The King described in these verses is not just any king. The writer to the Hebrews reveals that this King is Jesus (Hebrews 1:8-9). As King, Jesus comes with grace, mercy, and righteousness, but also with power to judge the wicked. Because we are His people by faith, our hearts overflow and our lips are ready to serve our King and eagerly share the news of His gracious rule and Kingdom. What this King offers to all sinners through faith is greater than any king ever received or could ever give. TLH 69. Epistle Reading: Ephesians 5:6-14 - Whose side are you on? Our LORD calls us to attention through His word and stirs us from laziness, unbelief, and the darkness of this world and our stink of sin. God implores and leads His children to walk in light and to receive substance by the gospel. Without Christ, there is only shame, guilt, emptiness, and the desire to continuing hiding. TLH 361. 10 P a g e

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 62:10-12 - Prepare for your King who brings salvation and redemption for you and every sinner! As our gracious King, Jesus has sought us out and brought deliverance. This good news is meant for all, and we are privileged to announce it to others. The LORD has made us His own, and sent us out to share this Good News with others. WS 773. Daily Bible Readings for Home Devotions Mon Deuteronomy 8:6-18 We belong in the line-up to receive God s blessings and to give Him thanks. We are fully as affluent as ancient Jews (12-13), and just as apt to forget the Lord who brought us out of our bondage, led us through this great and terrible wilderness of sinful decadence, and fed us with His Word (14-16). Remember! Praise Him! Tues Matthew 5:42-48 Let s admit that we have failed to be generous, to love and bless our enemies, to pray for those who mistreat us even though God is even-handed with scoundrels (45). God has children who are interested in more than friendships (46-47), for we represent a God who wants the very best for every human (48). Wed Acts 17:22-31 We take people as we find them and introduce them to God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth (22-25) and Creator of humanity (25-26). God nudges them to seek Him and find Him (27) prior to their death and day of judgment (31). We thank God for reaching out to rescue lost souls before it s too late. Thurs Psalm 126 What is the captivity of v. 4? It may well include all the consequences of sin. God can comfort hearts sorrowing over sin and can reverse spiritual poverty with His own rich grace. Jesus laid it out in Matthew 5: Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted; blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Fri Matthew 25:13-30 God has always been generous, and over the centuries many of His servants have done Him credit (15-17) with exceptions, of course (18). Here s the hard question: Will the record of our performance belong in vv. 20-23, or will our performance be like the fellow who was really a wicked and lazy servant? What we do with what we have been given tells its story and belongs in our record. Sat Revelation 22:12-21 Our Church Year calendar closes with the closing messages of the Spirit in this closing chapter of God s Word. Here Jesus gives us advance warnings (12-13 and advance advice too (14, 16-17). We dare not let anyone or anything cheat us on the Bible, for that would cheat us on being ready for Jesus return, too (18-19). If we grow impatient for Jesus return, that s only because we are weary of the long struggle with sin, Satan, and our flesh and fear that we may weaken in the struggle, for Satan is not slacking on his efforts to seduce us. Jesus knows all about our weaknesses, and so He promises: Surely I am coming quickly! We can hardly wait! Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus! May Your grace be with us all. Amen! 11 P a g e
