We strive to welcome, accept and love all people as they are, and through our ministries reach out with active concern to those in need.

Her Stories, Our Stories Sr. Joann Julka, SSSF Born into Community Like the first followers of Jesus, and every one since, we each hear the call, Come, follow me. It may come in our youth or when we re older or several times in the course of a lifetime. A trusted friend, teacher or mentor may suggest the possibility! However we experience it, each call, every vocation is unique in some ways and similar in others. We may be called to serve God and God s people as a married couple, a single person, an ordained man or as a vowed religious. The various expressions of the calls to serve are many, but the substance the very heart of the call - is the same. On whichever path God invites us to walk, we are all asked to partner with God in furthering God s reign on earth. This weekend we are celebrating a special milestone in one person s unique and special response to God s call S. Joann Julka s 45 th anniversary as a professed religious in the community of the School Sister of St. Francis. I asked S. Joann a few questions to learn a bit more about her story & her call: How did you experience God s call to religious life early on? As I often say, I was born in community as a twin! I had Franciscan sisters (SSSF) for grade school. I was impressed by my teachers, many of whom were great educators. And there was something mysterious about the sisters. There was a spirit of generosity about them. It was the same spirit people saw in my Dad who was always ready to help others. And people used to say of me, that I was my father s daughter. What about being a vowed religious has brought you great joy? Being in a community of dedicated women religious, having the support and friendship of so many has brought me great joy as have the great celebrations we have! It was a joy and a blessing to have such a good education and formation to nurture my mind and spirit! Both the community and I were so ready for Vatican II with the much needed changes it called for including liturgical changes - and the call to be a prophetic people. What do religious communities have to offer to the church and the world today? One Alverno College s past presidents and my advisor, S. Joel Read, once said that Women religious communities form one of the largest unions in the world. Standing together, we can make a difference. In this day and age, religious communities are called to be prophetic institutions following in the footsteps of Jesus. Our lifestyle is counter cultural, which in and of itself is prophetic. And what is it about the Franciscan way of following Christ that is most important to you? Living simply. Sharing over half of my income with the community gives me a sense of security and a renewed dedication to living the gospel faithfully and effectively in this day and age. Centering Prayer is a prayer of silence to help us to be aware of God during our time of prayer so that we can be more aware of God s presence in the rest of our day in the midst of our busy lives. We spend twenty minutes in silent prayer and then reflect on a Scripture passage, a tape or video. If you would like a quiet, prayerful experience, join us on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. in Room 200. HOPE Network s Drop-off Location Will Change October 1st! Special thanks to all of the individuals who donated clothing and baby items to HOPE Network! Unfortunately, our tiny office is unable to accommodate all of the donated items. Effective October 1 st, HOPE Network will move the drop-off location for donations from our office upstairs in Room 201 in Good Shepherd to the Northwest Trading Post located at Holy Cross Lutheran Church just a few miles from our office. This change will take a costly and time consuming step out of the donation process by bringing the items directly to the organization that distributes to families in need. Please be assured your donations will continue to go to families HOPE Network serves. The only change in the process is the location. All donations are tax-deductible and receipts are available. Great news there are no steps to climb! Your items can be taken to the Northwest Trading Post located in Holy Cross Lutheran Church here in Menomonee Falls. The Northwest Trading Post (co-sponsored by HOPE Network) is open the 3 rd Monday of each month and distributes FREE clothing and baby items to families in need. Used clothing is free with a donation of one or two non-perishable food item(s) for the local food pantry.
