We have Breast Cancer Month, Black History Month and so many others. April is dedicated to a form of respect life, Organ Donation. There is a reason that this month was chosen; it is traditionally the month that Easter is celebrated. As we all remember from four weeks ago, Easter is the feast of new life, promises fulfilled and hope. Giving the gift of life to someone who is in desperate need is a resurrection experience. A simple offering of one s organs upon death is a gift that helps to keep a person alive. Offering one s life for another is a truly Christ like gesture. Some question where the Church stands on this issue. It has been the practice of the Church since Pope Pius XII (1940 s) that organ donation is permissible as long as there is informed consent prior to the donation. St. John Paul II affirmed in "Evangelium Vitae," No. 86 that "the donation of organs, performed in an ethically acceptable manner, with a view to offering a chance of health and even of life itself to the sick who sometimes have no other hope" is a beautiful act expressing the culture of life. So what can one do to assist another with the gift of life? First, take time to research how your donation is used. Searching the internet will provide you with a myriad of articles on this topic. Second, make known your wishes. If you have renewed your driver s license recently then you are aware of the ability to designate your intent to be an organ donor. I checked my license and on the front lower right corner it states that I am an organ donor. Finally, let your family and physicians know of your intent. It is important that they are aware of your desire to offer life. This weekend we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday. A good shepherd watches over his flock and takes care of them. He guides them to take right paths so that they can be kept out of harm s way. Take heed of the Good Shepherd this week and care for those that are your brothers and sisters. In action with Jesus, the greatest gift we can give another is our life. Remember this week to keep in prayer those receiving their First Communion. May our Lord, with joy, welcome them to his table.
