Page 2 November 20, 2016 Welcome to St. Bernard of Clairvaux Scottsdale, AZ

November 20, 2016 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time Fr. Brian Bell, Pastor Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day this Thursday. This week will be one of the busiest for travel. Local news channels will broadcast stories about Thanksgiving meals and also about the poor who will be served by others. The president will pardon a turkey. Stores will gear up for Black Friday sales and a big shopping weekend. Financial markets in the United States will be closed down Thursday and have shortened hours on Friday. The collision of sentiments of gratitude and crass commercialism on a single weekend can make for a certain incongruence in one's experience of these few days. As we celebrate the feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, we are presented with a seemingly huge incongruity in the Gospel that is proclaimed this year. We celebrate a great King, and in our human experience when we hear of a king we think of fine robes, sumptuous feasts, grand castles, and scores of courtiers and servants. The Gospel today gives us a broken man, abandoned by his friends, condemned, reviled by a criminal, and hanging on a cross. This is the King we honor today. Thank God that we can live with a certain amount of dissonance in our lives. It is what allows us to hold in balance seemingly contradictory notions, like the fact that a crucified man is our Lord and King. One of the criminals crucified with Jesus asks that he be remembered when Jesus comes into his kingdom. That plea, uttered near the moment of his death, has become a prayer for Christians through the centuries, because we believe that the death of Jesus was not the end. We believe that his death was just the beginning, ushering in a new kingdom, and promising a new life that can be ours if we submit ourselves to the rule of this universal King. The promise Christ makes to the repentant thief is the promise he makes to us: we will be with him in paradise. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc Yours in Christ Father Brian T. Bell, Pastor Middle School Youth! Our parish Conference will be at the Bashas Market on the corner of Thompson Peak Pkwy. & Bell Rd. to collect frozen turkeys and food items all day on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. The collection at Bashas will replenish the pantries at the downtown St. Vincent de Paul dining facility and at St. Catherine of Sienna. In addition, we will fill food boxes for residents of our Parish. The turkeys and food items collected on this one day number in the thousands and help the St. Vincent de Paul Society feed hungry people this holiday season. Please consider buying an extra turkey and donate it at Bashas to help in our efforts to feed the hungry. Thank you for your generosity. Vincentians of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Conference

For families of St. Catherine of Siena Parish. Thank you. T h e V i n c e n t i a n s Sanctity of Life Pope Benedict Speaks on Life Issues St. John Paul II left behind an incredible pro-life legacy, as he was always unwavering about the sanctity of LIFE. Pope Benedict XVI proved himself to be equally resolute in continuing to raise the pro-life standard for the Catholic Church and humanity generally. The Pope took a strong stand against practices like abortion, euthanasia and embryonic stem cell research. The Pope was repeatedly emphasizing, the inviolability of human beings, the inviolability of human life from conception to natural death. In the Pope s book, The Europe of Benedict in the Crisis of Cultures, the Pope took to task nations, which have legalized abortion and condemned the culture, which, becomes virtually insensitive to abortion. The Pope said, Maybe because in abortion you don t see the face of who will be condemned and never see the light...every human life as such deserves to be always defended and promoted. We focus on thanking each one who has helped us, and ultimately thank God for the good gifts of this world. Let us pray God our Father, Graciously accept from your humble people a thankful heart and spirit. Everything we have and are able to share with others ultimately comes from your love of your creations. Often we think that everything we have is our own creation; we ask you this day to create in us a spirit of gratitude, that we may always know that all good gifts come from you. We ask this through Christ our brother, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. FROM FR. BRIAN AND STAFF OF ST. BERNARD S
