2 Welcome to St. Ludmila Church Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service St. Ludmila will be hosting the Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service on Sunday, Nov. 18th at 3:00pm. All are welcome to join us as we worship with members from Asbury United Methodist, Hope Lutheran, and Hus Presbyterian Churches. The collection taken up during this service will benefit Matthew 25 Ministries of Cedar Rapids. After the service, all are welcome to gather for fellowship at a reception in our parish Social Hall and enjoy cookies and beverages. This is a wonderful Ecumenical event as we gather with our neighborhood parishes. Attention Singles! We have been hosting events for young adults, married couples and high school students. Now, we need to plan something for you. Single, divorced, widowed, etc. Would you be willing to help me plan an event? Dinner, an outing to a show, social time with other parishioners? Contact Fr. Ken and we will see what we can put together. Perhaps we can plan something quarterly. 2018 St. Ludmila Christmas Mass times Christmas Eve, December 24th at 4:30p.m. and 8:30p.m., Christmas morning, December 25th at 8:30a.m. We will have overflow seating set up in the Social Hall for both Christmas Eve Mass times. Pray for those recently baptized and their families. Hudson Robert DeSotel Harrison Wayne Vander Tuig R C I A RCIA will gather on Thursday, Nov. 15th at 6:30p.m. in the Parish Center. Join our participants as we learn about the Liturgical Calendar. Thank you for your service! Today as we celebrate Veteran's Day may we take a moment to remember and recall the men and women throughout history who have served our nation defending our freedoms and protecting our boarders. In a special way may we remember and never forget those who have given the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. We also thank the parents, siblings, spouses and children who also make sacrifices daily so their loved ones can serve. Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed. Thank you Altar and Rosary Christmas Potluck: All women of St. Ludmila Parish are invited to the annual Altar and Rosary Society Potluck. It will be held in the Social Hall on Monday, Dec. 3rd, with appetizers beginning at 5:30p.m. and dinner at 6:00p.m. Bring your own table service, a dish to share and a non-perishable food item. Meat will be provided. Please RSVP by signing up in the Gathering Space the weekends of November 17/18 and 24/25. We hope to see you there! Looking for a Logo! We are seeking your creativity as our parish is looking for a logo for St. Ludmila. The logo will appear anywhere that St. Ludmila communicates within our parish, our community and all media that we use. Please submit a graphic design of your logo (2 x 2) by December 15th to the Parish Center. Logos will be reviewed by the Pastoral Council and a selection will be made in January. We look forward to viewing your great ideas for St. Ludmila! Catholic Daughters are happy to report that members unanimously voted to donate a large portion of the profit from our summer CDA Peach Sale to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, after learning their annual fundraising Walk for the Poor was cancelled due to recent high waters. Thank you for your support!

3 Family Time Among the most notable changes for me in this new role at Holy family has been our unique relationship with each parish. Coming from a parochial school (one parish and one school) it has been a blessing to partner with four different parishes, each with their own gifts. Every once in a while, I make a bit of time for adoration at St. Patrick's beautiful adoration chapel. Two weeks ago, I enjoyed a luncheon with some wonderful parishioners at St. John XXIII. Last weekend, my wife and I participated in an inspiring retreat for married couples at St. Ludmila. Our weekly all-school Masses at St. Jude are, of course, a highlight of each week. Each parish in our Holy Family School System is a blessing, and I look forward to enriching our partnership as we move forward. Of course, I would also love to hear from any parishioners who would like to better know our school system! Zach Zeckser YOUTH MINISTRY NCYC 2019 Attention all 8th-11th graders: NCYC spots are now open! Sign ups are available in the gathering space or by emailing Mackenzie at dbq029ym@dbqarch.org. A non-refundable deposit of $100 and sign up forms are due by Nov. 29th, 2018. You can send forms and deposit to the parish center. If you know individuals who at one time considered themselves a parishioner and are still in the area but are not able to attend Mass, please contact Sr. Mary Fran at 362-7282. We would like to reach out to those individuals. PASTOR S CORNER: This past week was National Vocation Awareness Week. I spent a couple of days visiting our students at Holy Family School sharing my vocation story and celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation with our Religious Education Students on Wednesday evening, along with other weekly ministries. All of these components of this vocation to Priesthood are important, talking about it and living out the ministry. Anytime we talk about vocations, I believe it is important that we mention and keep in mind the vocations to the single life, Holy Matrimony, Priesthood, Religious Life and Permanent Deaconate. Each of these vocations have a place in the Church and those committed to them are called to be representatives of Christ to the greater community. That being said, we as a community also have the responsibility to call forth men and women who we believe would be worthy candidates to these vocations. On Tuesday, December 11 th there will be an evening of reflection on the vocation to the Priesthood. I would be honored to attend this gathering with young men from our parish who would be open to learning more about this vocation. If you know of a young man from our parish between the ages of 17 and 45 who you think would be a good candidate, invite them to contact me. If that is intimidating, please pass their name along to me and I will invite them to join me for this event. No commitment needed; just an open mind in regards to the vocation to the Priesthood. I would also like to comment briefly on the Permanent Deaconate. This order was re-established at the Second Vatican Council. In the Archdiocese of Dubuque this was reintroduced in 1978. This year the universal Church is celebrating 50 years of the Permanent Deaconate. In the Archdiocese of Dubuque we are celebrating 40 years of the Permanent Deaconate. On October 28, I was able to attend the anniversary celebration along with our Permanent Deacons and their wives: Dick and Judy Manning (Ordained in 1978), Jim and Sue Berger (Ordained in 1979) and Mark and Rosann Sandersfeld (Ordained in 2013). What is the role of the Permanent Deacon? To assist the Priest in ministering to God s people through a variety of ministries. Our Deacons have done the following: preside at wake services and weddings; assist and preach at weekend liturgies and other celebrations; coordinate efforts to feed the hungry, provide housing for the homeless and other social justice efforts; visiting the homebound, those incarcerated and the infirmed. We are blessed to have three deacon couples in the parish. Keeping in mind, the deacons do not get paid for this ministry, but provide ministry because of their baptismal calling to be Priest, Prophet and King and through their ordination as a Permanent Deacon. As a community, let us continue to pray for all the vocations of the Church - those living the committed single life, the engaged and married, Religious Brothers and Sisters, Deacons and for all priests. I ask that you pray for those discerning their life s calling. May more men and women be open to and be willing to hear Jesus invitation to Follow Me! 5 Peace, Fr. Kenneth J. Glaser
