2 St. James the Less, St. Paul St. John the Baptist, Houghton St. James the Less - St. Paul My coworkers and I have been debating the death penalty and whether or not it should be part of our justice system. Why are so many people who claim to be prolife believers in favor of it? The issues of crime and punishment are never easy because so many factors influence people and how they view problems and solutions. Increased violence, loss of life, cost to taxpayers and the community at large, and the maneuverings of lawyers and courts only add fuel to the fire. When people are fearful or frustrated, they want to resolve it as soon as possible and that can heighten the sense of urgency and need for action. When bad things happen in your neighborhood or to your home or to you, you want relief. Any normal person would feel that way. A pro-life view does not insulate anyone from the bad effects of criminal behavior. Innocent people are hurt every day and it may seem as though those who cause the pain get away with it, or get off easy. The death penalty is not excluded by church teaching. The state has the right to impose penalties that are commensurate with the crime as well as to defend itself from further harm ("Catechism of the Catholic Church," 2266). When possible, punishment should help correct the offender, offering a chance of redemption, which is why the pope and bishops have called for an end to the death penalty. For more information, visit the Human Life and Dignity section of the USCCB's Web site (www.usccb.org). Sparking the Spirit Why God? Why Christian? Why Catholic? Twenty-Seventh Week of Ordinary Time, October 7, 2018 3 At The End Of A Rough Day, Pray This Prayer Pause for a few moments and pray this traditional evening prayer. By Philip Kosloski for Aleteia Since the very beginning of Christianity, there has been a tradition of praying both in the morning and in the evening. It is the best way to start the day and a perfect way to end it. Prayer at the end of the day is also a great way to relieve stress, releasing your many cares into the hands of God. When the day is rough, God knows how to soothe our restless heart. Below is a traditional evening prayer that has been handed down in the Catholic Church and reminds us to end the day in thanksgiving for what God has done in our lives, while at the same time asking for his forgiveness for when we failed him during the day. Lastly, the prayer puts us under the protection of the heavenly court and invites us to pray for others, especially those who have passed from this life to the next. O my God, at the end of this day I thank you most heartily for all the graces I have received from you. I am sorry that I have not made a better use of them. I am sorry for all the sins I have committed against you. Forgive me, O my God, and graciously protect me this night. Blessed Virgin Mary, my dear heavenly mother, take me under your protection. St. Joseph, my dear guardian angel, and all you saints of God, pray for me. Sweet Jesus, have pity on all poor sinners, and save them from hell. Have mercy on the suffering souls in purgatory. Remember! We have Sunday Evening Masses! As you know, people s lives have become too hectic. Most families are committed with sports, trips and extra-curricular activities. Sundays are no exception. Whereas in the old days going to Mass on Sunday morning was normal and taken for granted, unfortunately, today it is no longer so. Just a reminder that our area has Sunday Evening Masses. Sunday Evening Mass alternate between Sacred Heart Church in Ft. Madison and St. Mary's Church in West Point. The FIRST, THIRD, and when applicable, the FIFTH Sunday Nights will be in Ft. Madison, and the SECOND and FORTH Sunday Night will be in West Point. Starting October 14th, Sunday Night Masses at West Point will offer Children s Liturgy as well. All Mass begin at 5:30 p.m. no matter the location. While it might take some effort to drive a little distance to attend a Mass but what in life doesn't take some effort if we see it as important. We make the extra effort for our children and our social lives, hopefully we can make the effort for our spiritual lives as well. Stewardship St. Johns Corner... Please be regular in your giving! "To live charitably means not looking out for our own interests, but carrying the burdens of the weakest and poorest among us." ~Pope Frances Thank you for your generosity! AREA WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULES As the sun rose in the September sky, an important wall was placed at the new Holy Trinity Catholic elementary building. This exterior wall has a special, yet simple, cross etched into the structure. This cross is a true symbol of our shared commitment to Holy Trinity's faith in education. It was a wonderful morning to recognize that God is present in our school, and how blessed we are. Saturdays 4:00 p.m. Sacred Heart - Ft.
