In a world saturated with horrific events, making movies that celebrate evil doesn t help our current situation. There s one horror that Hollywood doesn t want to touch though and that s the horror of abortion that kills unborn babies and wounds not only mothers and fathers but our entire society as well. There is a recently released movie called Gosnell that is based on the true story of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell and it will be shown at the Lewiston Village Center Cinema for a few days. Show times are as follows through Oct. 31: Weekdays 3:25; 6:25 & 9:05. Sat. & Sun: 10:45 am & 1:05. It may show beyond Oct. 31 but that will be determined by ticket sales. It won t be a pleasant show to watch but will hopefully help move hearts to reject the culture of death that abortion promotes. 1
dave s desk 1858-1955 Looking at the years above, the dash represents the span of life of a girl named Kate Drexel who was born into a wealthy family in Philadelphia. She lived a very comfortable life but she wasn t consumed by the comforts of this world and had a heart for those less fortunate. While on a family trip to the western part of the United States when she was a young woman she witnessed the challenging situations faced by many Native Americans. Soon after she began to financially support missions and missionaries. During a trip to Rome, Kate was able to meet with Pope Leo XIII and in this meeting, she requested that he send missionaries to the Native Americans. He simply responded, Why not my child, yourself become a missionary? This question of the Pope was really an answer for her. She had been discerning a call to religious life and his response was the confirmation she needed to follow that prompting. youth group WITH THE LORD From there Kate (Katharine) went on to found a congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. In many areas of the country, both in the rural areas where racial minorities were experiencing difficulties, as well as inner city neighborhoods, Mother Katharine Drexel s missionary sisters could be found serving the needs as they were able. We now know Katherine as St. Katharine Drexel. She was canonized a saint in the year 2000 by Pope John Paul II. This coming Thursday, the Church celebrates All Saints Day. For us here at All Saints Parish, it s a particularly appropriate time to celebrate our parish nameday. The saints point us to Jesus Christ. And aren t we in dire need now of men and women of heroic virtue with missionary spirits that will point us to Jesus Christ? Who could we recruit? Perhaps Pope Leo XIII s response to Katherine echoes down to us yet today: why not you? Our mission field is not in a far off land. Our mission is to witness to Jesus Christ in the ordinary uneventful events of our daily lives. Our lives are summed up in the dash mark between our birth year and the yet unknown year of our death. In the midst of urgent concerns, none is more urgent than living with the end goal of heaven in mind. Catholic Answers host, Patrick Coffin, reminds us: Be a saint. What else is there? The French author, Leon Bloy said it this way: The only real tragedy in life is not to become a saint. Oct 29 Newsboys Concert Deadline. faith fitness community HALLOWEEN SCENE DINNER As the annual celebration of Halloween approaches, we are reminded of the importance of maintaining the Catholic meaning and purpose of all holy days, especially those which have been adopted and adapted by the culture around us. Over time, popular culture has made it difficult to discern the authentic spirit of this great feast, an important time when we, God's pilgrim church on earth, rejoice in the lives of all God's saints whom we wish to follow into eternal life. adoration hours The word "Halloween" comes from a combination of two words in the English language's history. The word "hallow" means "holy" while the word "e'en" represents a shortening of the word "evening." The word "hallows" means "holy ones" or "saints." Thus "Hallow-e'en" or "Hallows' Eve" refers to "The Eve of All Saints." As a holy day of obligation celebrated each year on Nov. 1, the Solemnity of All Saints begins with Evening Prayer the day before (Oct. 31), like all Sundays and other holy days of obligation. Halloween announces the earliest possible celebration of the Solemnity of All Saints. All Saints parish is blessed to offer the annual Community Dinner (previously held in the school gym) here at All Saints in our well appointed social hall this year. The dinner will be offered, as is the custom, to all at no cost. As a point of clarification, the dinner will be held here on Saturday, December 1st from 11 am to 4. The Christmas Connection that requires signing up and entitles those eligible gifts for children & grocery gift cards sponsored by Toys for Tots and St. Vincent DePaul will be held on the next Saturday, December 8th in the hospitals St. Stanislaus location. EXTENDED! Adoration on Mondays has been extended! Each Monday Adoration will available from 8 am to 8. When arriving after 4 please enter and exit from the south side parking lot door into the church. Because praise is fitting for loyal hearts (cf. Ps 33:1), let us urge one another this Halloween to express in every detail of our observance the beauty and depth of the Feast of All Saints. Let us make this year's celebration an act of true devotion to God, whose saints give us hope that we too may one day enter into the Kingdom prepared for God's holy ones from the beginning of time.
