The Diocesan Church is asking for assistance in identifying the present state of the church in the Diocese of Davenport related to evangelization and outreach as presented by Pope Francis in The Joy of Gospel. Please join us so that you may participate in the Diocese assessment of the church and its goal of missionary discipleship. St. Mary's will once again participate in Christmas for Kids and Christmas for Teens. Starting next week a box will be placed in the Ossenbrink Center for your donations through the month of November. Toys books and gift cards all make great donations. All items will go to families in need in Lee County. Last year 372 kids and 73 teens received presents on Christmas morning due to your generous donations. We invite youths in grades K-6 in the Diocese of Davenport to participate in our annual contest to create a 2018 Christmas card for The Catholic Messenger. Drawings should be done on white, 8 ½- by 11 inch paper in colored pencil, crayon, marker or paints. Please submit original artwork only; no black and white drawings. The artwork should focus on the religious nature of Christmas. If using the color yellow, please use a deep yellow or make sure it is surrounded by a dark color. Yellow is hard to reproduce. The contest, which has a Nov. 15 postmark deadline, is open to youths living in or attending school, home school or religious education in the Diocese of Davenport. Messenger staff members will judge the entries based on originality and the ability to convey what Christmas means to Catholics. Entries must include first and last name, age, grade, home address, school (public, private or home school with the school s location) and parish (name and city) on the back of the drawing. Please do not fold entries. Any information omitted could be grounds for disqualification. Winning entries will be featured in The Catholic Messenger s Christmas edition (Dec. 20). The drawings also will be featured on The Catholic Messenger Web site: www.catholicmessenger.net. All entries should be postmarked by Nov. 15 to The Catholic Messenger, 780 W. Central Park Ave., Davenport, IA 52804-1901. Holy Trinity Catholic School TAPS (Teacher & Parent organization) will once again be selling poinsettias. Thank you to all who helped and participated by buying lunch or playing bingo. The day was a great success. The money collected will go to Tom and Sarah Kruse to help pay for medical expenses. What a gift God has given us to be able to help others. Everyday at Holy Trinity Catholic is worthy of gratitude and praise, and we have had many exceptional days throughout October and into November. Wyatt Hellman will be featured in an upcoming article in "The Catholic Messenger" for his winning essay and participation in the World Food Prize. This is a prestigious program in the world and our Crusader family is very proud of Wyatt. The fifth grade class has studied the saints in religion class as part of All Saints Day. They each researched a saint and presented their research to their classmates. They also decorated a wooden spoon as their chosen saint. What a creative and educational way for our students to learn more about the Communion of Saints in our faith. In addition to All Saints Day and All Souls Day, Holy Trinity Catholic enjoyed some Halloween festivities as well. From preschool to high school, the halls were full of delighted students, teachers, and staff in fantastic costumes. Our Spanish classes learned about the Mexican tradition of Spoons to represent "Dia de los Muertos" that began on October 31 and ended on the saints November 2. The students learned how this relates to All Souls Day and the importance of praying for and honoring our deceased. We are so grateful for the wonderful educational and faithful opportunities that our students have each day. Display of Dia de los Muertos Teachers and students dressed up for Halloween
