Grand Knight s Message: Has there ever been a time throughout our history with so much violence and so much destruction? Wars are a huge part of our history as a human race. But I believe the divisiveness is worse now than ever before. Instead of looking for who to blame, shouldn t we work together to achieve peace? Instead of focusing on creating laws in an attempt to prevent violence, shouldn t we spend more time researching why these individuals and groups have violent tendencies? Those are just my thoughts in the wakes of the Las Vegas tragedy, recent hurricanes, and earthquakes. I ask all of you to join me in praying for all those affected, for the relief efforts, and for peace and unity in our country and in our world. I also ask and encourage all brother Knights and their families to participate in the 40 Days For Life campaign. More information can be found in the Culture of Life report below. I d like to thank our Worthy District Deputy, Dr. John Sherry, Worthy District Warden Butch Paramore, and Sir Knight Father Jack Bogacz for presiding at our Installation of Officers on September 30 th. It was a wonderful ceremonial followed by a celebration of appreciation for all of our Past Grand Knights. I extend special recognition to our immediate Past Grand Knight, Joe Badowski. Joe led this Council the past two years, overseeing numerous successful events, and earning us two consecutive Columbian Awards amongst other accolades. Thank you, Joe, for your dedication and your continued service to our Council. I d also like to thank Sir Knight Dick Bakley for his assistance in coordinating the event with D Avanzo Catering and Brother Thom Scattaregia for suggesting we combine these two events. Our combined efforts resulted in a fun and memorable evening. TRUST FUND TRUSTEE ELECTION: The following brother Knights have been nominated to serve as trust fund trustees for the 2017-2018 Columbian Year. They have accepted the nomination and we will hold a special election at our business meeting on Thursday, November 2 nd at 7:30pm in the OLGC Cafeteria. All of these men are Past Grand Knights of Council 1082. Many have served in this very role, or a similar role previously. I am confident in their abilities and eager for their guidance in our trust fund matters. I encourage all members to attend the November 2 nd meeting and cast your vote! BUDGET APPROVAL: Thank you to our members for voting to adopt the proposed budget for the 2017-2018 Columbian Year. I also must thank Financial Secretary Stuart Altschuler, Treasurer Thom Scattaregia, Deputy Grand Knight Joe Badowski, Recorder William Lynch, Advocate William Thomas, and Trustees Dr. John Sherry and Ed Michalak for their assistance preparing the budget. Without an adopted budget, almost every bill requires a membership vote prior to payment. This causes delays in payment since we only hold one monthly business meeting. Furthermore, if we fail to have a quorum present at the meeting, the vote must be postponed. The adopted budget allows us to pay bills for itemized line items up to the budgeted amount. The budget has been adopted and can be found at the end of the newsletter. Deputy Grand Knight s Report: Since our last newsletter this Country has suffered through three devastating hurricanes, and the worst mass shooting in America s history. Is this a sign of the times or beginning of the end of time as has been predicted in the Book of Revelations? Now is the time for prayer. October 13th of this month marks the 100-year Anniversary of the final visit of our Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima. Now is the time to revisit her request from us to pray the Rosary daily for the repentance of sinners and non-believers, and to make sacrifices in our daily lives. Council Report: MEMBERSHIP DRIVE: Our annual Church Membership Drive is October 7th and 8th after all Masses. All Knights are asked to arrive 10 minutes early and/or stay 10 minutes after Mass to assist. Prior to Mass, we will hand out brochures with information about the Council as men enter the Church. Following Mass, we will collect contract information and answer any questions. Please see Grand Knight George Tower or Deputy Grand Knight Joe Badowski to obtain the materials. How many of you joined the Knights because someone asked you to join? Won t you do the same and help us grow our order? Help us at whatever Mass you normally attend. Some of you may be reading the newsletter after the drive has been completed. Don t worry! You can still help us by attending the Open House on Thursday, October 19th at 7:30pm in the School Cafeteria. The Open House is open to all Knights, prospective members, and their spouses. Do you have a son, a brother, other family members or friends who are not yet Knights? Invite them to join! Come to the Open House and learn why we need you and what benefits the Knights have waiting for you!
FIRST DEGREE: Soon after our Membership Drive and Open House is our Admission Degree (First Degree) ceremony. This will be held on our normal business meeting night of Thursday, November 2 nd. We will open the business meeting briefly to read and vote on the new members applications. We will also hold a special election this evening for our Trust Fund Trustees. Following the vote and election will be the Degree ceremony. All members are asked to wear a jacket a tie. Let s have a strong showing of support for our new members! ANNUAL GOLF OUTING: Our Council s annual golf outing was held on Tuesday September 12th at Ramblewood Country Club in Mount Laurel, NJ. The outing was a great success and enabled us to raise $4,500. This year s proceeds will be distributed to Helpers of God s Precious Infants (providing support for pregnant women), Options for Women of Cherry Hill, NJ (a counseling and support service program for pregnant women), Good Counsel Home in Riverside (a home for unmarried pregnant women), and the St. Vincent de Paul Society (a source of help on a nondenominational basis, assisting others in financial need). Many thanks to all of the Knights that came up to volunteer their time to help make this outing a success. Church Report: SOCIAL TRIP TO ST. JOHN NEUMAN SHRINE: Several Moorestown Knights and their families made a pilgrimage to the National Shrine of St. John Neumann, 5th & Girard Ave., on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in September. The fourth bishop of Philadelphia from 1852 to his death in 1860 increased the Catholic schools from 2 to 100. His diocese included South Jersey at the time. He was born in Bohemia 1811 where he could not be ordained because of an over abundance of priests (believe it or not). He learned English and was accepted by the Diocese of New York. To serve the immigrant population in America, he learned French, Spanish, Dutch and Italian. Our group returned to Moorestown to enjoy a light meal and conversation at a local restaurant. Friday, October 13 is the 100th Anniversary of the final Apparition of Fatima. A perfect day to go to Mass and/or say a Rosary for world peace. Fifteen Promises of the Rosary: Our Lady revealed the following promises to St. Dominic (the saint to whom the rosary was first given in the 12th century) and later to Blessed Alan de la Roche (who reignited devotion to the rosary in the 15th century):
1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive signal graces. 2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary. 3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies. 4. It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the heart of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means. 5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish. 6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered and never overwhelmed by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death (unprepared for heaven). The sinner shall convert. The just shall grow in grace and become worthy of eternal life. 7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church. 8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have, during their life and at their death, the light of God and the plenitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise. 9. I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary. 10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in heaven. 11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary. 12. All those who propagate the holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities. 13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death. 14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons, and brothers of my only son Jesus Christ. 15. Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination Community Report: SPECIAL NEEDS RE PROGRAM: On Saturday September 23rd our Grand Knight, George Tower presented a check in the amount of $1,696 to OLGC Special needs RE during the 9 am Mass. The money raised from last June s Disabilities Drive went to support this ministry at our Parish.
SEND A HERO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS: Council 1082 is joining this fundraising effort that helps reunite military personnel deployed from Joint Base with their families for Christmas. The Trenton Diocesan Federation works with the Joint Base Chaplain to identify receipients. In the last four years, 117 service men and women were home for Christmas because of this program. Donations will be accepted after Masses during the Membership Drive or checks payable to K of C Council 1082 may be sent to George Tower,40 Revere Ave, Moorestown, NJ 08057. Please write Hero on the memo line. Thank you for supporting our military heroes! NEW EYES FOR THE NEEDY / USED STAMPS FOR VETERANS: We are always collecting eyeglasses for the needy and used postage stamps for our veterans. Donations may be placed in the Knights of Columbus plastic bin located in the Sacred Heart room at the rear of the main Church. Thank you to Past Grand Knight Angelo Sanelli for his leadership and dedication to these programs. Religious and Civil Liberties Report: Knights are asked to support Supreme Knight Carl Andrson s efforts to reconstruct & resettle Karamdes - a town on the Nineveh Plains destroyed by ISIS. The fundraising goal is $2 million dollars. It costs approximately $2,000 to resettle just one family. The rebuilding work will begin this week and money will begin flowing to the project immediately. One hundred percent of the money raised will be used for this project. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations can be made at www.christiansatrisk.org or by calling 1-800-694-5713. Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights are also asked to continue their prayers and financial support for victims of Hurricanes affecting the Caribbean nations as well as Texas, Florida and Louisiana. Pray the rosary every day for peace in our country and around the world. Opposing factions in this country and internationally have caused split or divisiveness seemingly beyond repair. Please pray to our Blessed Mother daily. Contact your senator and assemblymen to push a Yes vote on the Pain Capable Child Protection Act; and write letter(s) to the editor of their newspapers pushing for its passage The link to finding one s senator and assemblymen is: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp. From the NJ Catholic Conference, we are still encouraging all of our groups to express thanks to the legislature for the increased funding for nonpublic schools. We received an $8.7 million dollars increase for transportation and increased funding for nursing services, technology and
security. The Knights were most helpful to us in their outreach to legislators. Truly, the Fiscal Year 2018 State Budget was the best year for nonpublic schools in a very long time. Physician assisted suicide. This is a slow time for legislative matters as we await the November elections. When the legislature returns after the elections, there might be a push to pass the assisted suicide bill in the Senate (S2474). The bill already has passed in the Assembly. We are hopeful that Governor Christie would veto the bill if the assisted suicide bill does pass. If the bill starts to move, we will need the knights to weigh-in with both Senators and the Governor. Culture of Life Report: PAIN CAPABLE UNBORN CHILD PROTECTION ACT: I am very pleased to report that the federal version of the "Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act" (HR 36) passed in the US House of Representatives largely along party lines by a vote of 237-186 with 11 no votes. Only three Democrats supported the bill and only three Republicans opposed it. The bill will now proceed to the Senate. This will be a much bigger hurdle! In the past, this bill was killed twice in the US Senate (in 2013 and 2015) because the pro-life senators did not have the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster. If the bill does pass in the Senate, President Trump has promised to sign it into law. Then, we can expect that the law would immediately be challenged in Federal Court and would ultimately be heard by the US Supreme Court. Please stay tuned for updates on the bill s progress as we will ultimately need to reach out to our respective US Senators and exhort them to support the bill. The outcome of today s vote is very encouraging. It demonstrates both the critical importance of electing pro-life politicians to office and the impact that your passionate advocacy for equal rights for babies in the womb is having. Many thanks for all your calls and prayer and fasting and other work on behalf of our littlest brothers and sisters in the womb! Your sister in Christ, Christine Flaherty 20/20 Project Chair PS We must continue to work at the NJ State level so that our State Assembly Members and Senators pass this bill (A-3452/S-2026) in New Jersey. They need to hear from us by phone and in handwritten letters! To find your NJ State legislators visit: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/districts/municipalities.asp. 40 days for LIFE: October is Pro-Life Month. Prayer is our most power weapon against the societal culture of death that surrounds us. We can pray individually, and we can pray as a group. 40 Days for Life is an international program focused on prayer to end abortion. You can help by joining in the vigil between now and November 5 th. The vigil location is outside the Cherry Hill Women s Center, 502 Kings Hwy North, Cherry Hill, NJ. Claire Howson from Helpers of God s Precious Infants is the local contact for 40 Days for Life. The vigil hours are 7am to 7pm daily. All Knights
are asked to go and pray for one hour. Surely we can all find just ONE HOUR between now and November 5 th. Take a moment right now to set a date and time on your calendar. Registration is encouraged but not required. More info can be found at http://40daysforlife.com/cherryhill or by contacting Claire Howson at 856-313-9861. Another way to support Pro-Life month is to attend the Knights of Columbus Pro-Life Mass. Father Chris Colvaito will celebrate Mass at Holy Cross Academy on Route 130 in Delran. The Mass is on Wednesday, October 25 th at 7:00pm. If weather permits, a procession to the Blessed Mother statue will follow Mass. Mass is open to everyone. Bring your family and friends! Please pray for: Deacon Frank Giglio, Bob Malaciewski s wife, Marianne Scattaregia, Lydia Lyzinski, Pat Bakley If you have a prayer intention you would like included in the newsletter, please contact GK George Tower (609-304-2743 / george@techofthetownnj.com. Mass cards, sympathy cards, and get-well cards are available for any Knight, their family, and/or special intentions. Please contact Greg Klint at 609-556-8505 or klintgregory@gmail.com if you would like the Council to send a card. Be sure to include the person s name, complete address, and a personal message we can include.
