In his denunciation of the scribes (the religious experts of his day), he warns against three things: the desire for prominence and first place of honor rather than lowly service for the benefit of others; the desire for deference and recognition (and seeking esteem from others) rather than seeking to promote the good of others through humble service and selfless care for others; and thirdly, attempting to use one's position (even a religious position) for self-gain and self-advancement. True religion is relating rightly to God and to one's neighbor with love, honor, and respect. The Lord puts his Holy Spirit within us that we may be filled with the joy of his presence, the joy of true worship, and the joy of selfless giving and love for others. True reverence for God frees the heart to give liberally, both to God and to neighbor. Book of Remembrance Not only on All Souls Day, but for the entire month of November, a remembrance book will be placed in the vestibule of the Church in which anyone may write the name of a deceased family member or friend. We will pray for them at each mass during November, the month of All Souls. Next Sunday Is Hospitality Sunday We will have Hospitality next Sunday, November 18th, following the 10:30 Mass in the St. Joseph Room. Please join us for refreshments and spend time with other parishioners.
November 11, 2018 Page 2 #623 Veteran s Day Veteran s Day will be observed on Monday, November 12th. Veteran s Day is a time to honor America s Veterans for their patriotism and willingness to serve and sacrifice for our nation s common good. Let us keep all men and women of the Armed Forces, past and present, in our prayers. We must pray without tiring, for the salvation of mankind does not depend on material success; nor on sciences that cloud the intellect. Neither does it depend on arms and human industries, but on Jesus alone. Men s Group Men s Group meeting Thursday, November 15th Heroic Priesthood - Holiness is heroism. Hear Bishop Robert Barron explain Christ s invitation to priesthood as an invitation to a way of life that is athletic in its intensity and heroic in its form. We re currently experiencing the darkest period in the history of American Catholicism, he observed. People are drifting away from religion at massive rates. They re disenchanted with God and disappointed with the Church. The fastest growing group is the so-called nones, those who express no religious affiliation. Bishop Robert Barron My goal with this film is to reach as many people as possible, certainly priests and seminarians, but especially young Catholic men. I want them to see that holiness is heroic and that Jesus Christ s invitation to the priesthood is an invitation to an extraordinary life.
