St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Folks, And with this day we bid farewell do our dear friend Fr. Mark Moretti. His departure Mass will be at 12:30 today (Sunday June 26 th ) with reception in Mercy Hall right after Mass. All are encouraged to bid the good priest a bon voyage to Culpeper. Not bad. Pretty close. Mind you now, his good mother will be attendance. It is not going to be anything like Barry Fitzgerald meeting his mother at the end of the movie, Bells of St. Mary s, but you might give her a word of thanks for giving us such a good son/priest. Let the changes begin. I thought of writing an introduction for our new priest, Fr. Kevin Fimian, but found this article in the Arlington Catholic Herald to serve as an excellent introduction. It comes from the days before his ordination. (June 8, 2006) Fimian said his Catholic faith has been the one constant in his life. This faith is family-based, he said, developed through his mother s and father s insistence on their seven children praying the rosary together nightly. His father, a naval officer, and his mother, a stay-at-home mom, made the faith central in their happy household. Fimian referred to the parishioners he has encountered as an extension of my family and was overwhelmed by the generous nature and the love with which the communities received him. He said he was especially grateful for the warm reception given to him by the cathedral parishioners, and credits his successful year to the prayers and sacrifices of those good people. Right from the get-go they loved me and I loved them, he said. Fimian has attended daily Mass on a regular basis since seventh grade. For the most part that was one constant, he said. I saw its effect in my own life. The grace that comes from the sacrament is altering. Later in life, Fimian began spending 15 minutes a day in a conversation with our Lord through adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament. These regular conversations what he calls the central part of my vocation introduced him to the idea of the priesthood, both spiritually through prayer and physically through a former seminarian who also regularly attended adoration at the same chapel. This man introduced Fimian to other men preparing for the priesthood and gave him a glimpse of seminary life. When I sat down, I discovered that our Lord was calling me to another kind of life, he said. He found that life, and embraced it wholeheartedly. God called me and I m being ordained a priest despite my faults, Fimian said. If you give yourself to God and follow where He is leading, trusting in Him, you will never regret it. Our parish Youth Director, Mrs. Allison Hagert will soon leave us to take up her new job Youth Director at St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in Anthem, Arizona. She will leave after the Arlington Diocesan Work Camp. Enclosed is the parish website for youth activities at St. Rose in case you would like to dial in and see how she is doing: God bless her for her wonderful work at St. John s for the last two years. She will be missed. http://www.stroseanthem.com/youth-ministry. Miss Cece Galvin will soon become the next Youth Director for St. John s. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and teaches in our parish grammar school. She is an active member in the parish choir where many of you have witnessed her beautiful voice when she serves as cantor at Mass. In addition she has served as one of the directors for the Torch Drama Club. The weekend show she is currently directing is, Guys and Dolls. God bless her in her new duties with the kids of the parish. She will be terrific. More to come. And now, the best for last. The parish welcomes back Mr. Temple Macdonald who will assume the duties as new principal to St. John s grammar school. He replaces our great friend, Mr. Art Fairweather who will soon retire. Mr. Macdonald is no stranger to the school. In the past he served as teacher and co-principal to Mr. Fairweather. In recent years he has served as vice principal at St. Leo s grammar school in Fairfax. I leave you with a brief resume of his background you that may find of interest if you are interested in sending your young ones to our parish school. Mr. Macdonald graduated from Campbellsville University in May 2008 with a Bachelor's in Physical Education and a minor in Health, and has received teaching certification in Kentucky, Prince Edward Island, and Virginia. He has a Master's Degree in Administration and Supervision from Marymount University. While at Campbellsville, he was a scholarship baseball player and captain of the team in his final two years. His time at Marymount has helped him to see the gravity of leading a school centered on faith. He believes that an effective Catholic principal is enthusiastic about being the spiritual leader of the school, developing faith formation, and dedicated to providing a student centered learning environment. His experiences within the classroom have helped him develop many invaluable skills including effective communication, collaboration and organization; however, he sees his greatest strength as his leadership ability. I have always been a leader, and thoroughly enjoy this role. In the previous time at St. John the Evangelist School, I had the opportunity to grow as a supervisor. I have been the Director of Extended Day, CYO Athletic Director, and the acting co-principal while my administrator recovered from surgery. My dedication can be seen through the level of my involvement in my school and the invaluable level of commitment I offer to all aspects of my career. My current role as assistant principal at Saint Leo the Great Catholic School has allowed me to gain vital experience overseeing instruction, discipline, development, admissions, and technology. Sometime this Summer we will host an open house at the rectory for all who would like to meet Temple and his family. His wife, Kelly, is a recent convert to the Faith and joined the Church at St. John the Evangelist Church. On behalf of myself, the priests of the rectory along with many others within and school community and the full parish family we say, Welcome home Temple. God bless you and all of us with your presence. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate Answer: The lovely Mrs. Katie McClure provided the history on the angel statue outside the front door of St. John s Church. I believe that Chilton McDonnell, former St. John parishioner and member of K o C, suggested to his brother Knights that the Angel of Life statue be erected at St. John's. The K o C Council agreed and donated the statue in memory of all babies that die through abortion. Bravo Zulu to the Knights of Columbus. Collegiate Question: In honor of son of the parish, Lieutenant JG Daniel Evans USN, currently floating around various unknown, if not unsafe, places for our safety and security we ask, What is the origin of phrase, Bravo Zulu? For help, ask a squid such at Midshipman Andrew Bishop, at the US Naval Academy. Fr. Gould 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 26 June 2016 Greetings! Happy Fathers' Day to all our parish dads and our parish priests as well. I wanted to share a few of my thoughts on education today and the challenges faced by Catholic educators, as well as a guide for how they should proceed in educating students. "A FEW REMINDERS..." "Our job is to teach the students we havenot the ones we would like to have. not the ones we used to have. Those we have right now. All of them."- Dr. Kevin Maxwell "Care about each student you teach because children deserve a caring teacher. They will be able to tell by your actions and it will come naturally. The children who are the most difficult to love, need it the most." - Natasha Babineau "Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way"- George Evans "As adults we had our day, for good or bad, when we were in school. Now it is the current children's time to be educated. If what administrators or teachers are doing is not right for students, I do not want to hear about it. It is not about our comfort or how it has always been done, it is about the welfare emotionally, spiritually and academically of the kids."-art Fairweather Have a great summer! ST. JOHN PRESCHOOL/PRE-K As the St. John's Preschool year comes to an end, we would like to express our deep appreciation to all of our wonderful families for their generosity and support you have given us throughout the year. Thank you for entrusting us with your child's care and education. We hope that everyone has a safe and fun-filled summer. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wed. evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm, from September through the weeks after Easter. Little Flowers Girls Club Will host their annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Mary s Garden Party Camp at the Freedom Center in Leesburg, VA on July 8-10, 2016. All Catholic girls age five and up and their mothers are invited, whether they have any previous involvement in Little Flowers Girls Club or not. The cost is only $125 for the mother/daughter lodge accommodations or $65 if tent camping. Registration is online at http://www.beholdpublications.com/summercamps/. The Mary s Garden Party Camp is an opportunity for up to a hundred girls to come together for a weekend centered on the Blessed Mother, building virtue and strengthening authentic Catholic friendships. Girls will have the opportunity to earn badges and have a fun camp experience in a completely Catholic environment. Moms and leaders will have the opportunity to share wisdom on raising young girls, exchange advice on running their Little Flowers Club and have the opportunity to collaborate on a more effective program. 6

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 26 June 2016 Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? New this Year! Study the Bible at your own pace and at home. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. YOUNG @ There will be no July meeting. All over 55 are welcome.
