We are Catholics. We are Americans. We are proud to be both, grateful for the gift of faith which is ours as Christian disciples, and grateful for the gift of liberty which is ours as American citizens. To be Catholic and American should mean not having to choose one over the other. Our allegiances are distinct, but they need not be contradictory, and should instead be complementary. That is the teaching of our Catholic faith, which obliges us to work together with fellow citizens for the common good of all who live in this land. That is the vision of our founding and our Constitution, which guarantees citizens of all religious faiths the right to contribute to our common life together. Our First, Most Cherished Liberty: A Statement on Religious Liberty, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty, April 12, 2012 We live in an age where our first freedoms are being threatened. The Fortnight for Freedom is a time where we set aside time to reflect on the state of our religious liberties in the United States. The Fortnight for Freedom takes place from June 21 to July 4, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. EARLY DEADLINE Ascension: any notices for the July 4 5 th bulletin need to be sent to the parish office by Thursday June 25 th. Eagle Scout Project My name is Connor Holliday and I am a Life Scout from Troop 361 here in Norwood. I am looking for donations to help fund my Eagle Scout Project this summer. My project is to stop the flooding of the church basement, which fortunately didn't happen this spring, but did flood the spring before and caused damage. I am digging a trench along the side of the church with the parking lot to put in drain tile, then put dirt and rock back in, which will force the water to the street instead of the basement. I am also fixing several gravestones in the cemetery that have fallen into disrepair and are sinking into the ground. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, or my father Mark, because I think he knows everybody here. We are usually at the 8am Sunday mass. Thank you and have a great rest of your day. God Bless. There will be second collection the weekend of July 11 12 th to assist Connor to reach his goal. Church of St. Bernard Cologne, MN For the next several weeks the school information column will have the Sixth Grade Graduation address in parts until the complete address has been published. We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe! We will always remember Peggy Eiden, our cook. She planned each menu carefully so that we ate everything we needed to stay healthy. Her food was not only healthy, but it tasted delicious. It wasn t only the food, though. We will remember the love that Peggy spooned out with the food. She made lunch a fun experience. We will always remember the exciting events we looked forward to each year: the marathon, the winter carnival, Catholic Schools Week, Wacky Winter Olympics, the Christmas programs, May crowning, skits, plays, movies and popcorn, the school dance birthday lunches and so much more. We will never forget the fun we had! To be continued next week 20 years of thanks! A heartfelt thank you to Marcia Tellers and all who assisted her with the St. Bernard Scrip Program for the last 20 years. The program brought in helpful revenue for our school with no cost. We are grateful for your generous and diligent service to St. Bernard! Early Faith Formation registration for school year 2015/2016 after weekend Masses this weekend. A table for registration will be in the narthex. Also if you are interested in being a Catechists or can help in any way, please come to the registration table and let us know. Thank you! Eucharistic Adoration Wednesday, July 1st, after the 8:00 a.m. Mass until 8:00 p.m. Please sign up at the Scrip table for an hour or half hour. Over the past year or so, God has called home a few of the older people who regularly signed up for Adoration so if you can commit to some time in Adoration, please sign up. You will be greatly blessed. BANNS OF MARRIAGE Julie Thaemert and Brian Malady who will be married on June 27th at St. Bernard Church
