1 Zion ~ Where Friends become Family ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH October 2018 Volume No. 72 Issue No. 10 YOU DID IT! Last month I shared with you the opportunity to provide Pew Bibles so that we can all look at the same passage of Scripture in its context. And you responded very well and very quickly, and, with one large gift and many others we have 182 Pew Bibles that we ll be ordering! 150 of them will be put in the pews, some will be put in the Narthex or Fellowship Hall (for overflow) and some will be kept just in case the binding breaks or we lose some from the pews. That is fantastic!!! Thanks SO much for all who donated these Bibles! It will help so much as we nurture faith and reach out to those who don t yet know Jesus by being able to open a Bible during worship! God is certainly good, and the people of Zion are certainly awesome! October 28! On Reformation Sunday, October 28, four of our youth are affirming their baptismal faith by making a commitment to follow Jesus in all they say and do. Rory Eldridge, Sam Eldridge, Drew Iverson, and Daniel Jeffries will be confirmed and will share a faith testimony at both services. Come and join them in this important step of faith! There will be a basket for each confirmand in the narthex if you would like to write a card of congratulations. We are so proud of them!

Blessing of the Animals, Oct. 14 th In recognition of St.

A special offering will be taken for the Brightside Animal Shelter in Redmond on that day to help them in their work of caring for unwanted and abused pets and finding them loving homes.

General giving for category 1 was $9,950 and category 2 was $6,965 for an income total of $16,915 and our general expenses totaled $18,337. YTD expenses are $161,122 compared to $161,152 in 2017.

2 Blessing of the Animals, Oct. 14 th In recognition of St. Francis of Assisi, his love for all God s creatures, and our calling to follow his spirit of gladness and gratitude for all of God s creation, Zion s 8:30 & 11:00 a.m. services on Sunday, October 14, will reflect a spirit of thanksgiving for our animal friends at and we will hold a special Blessing of the Animals at 9:45 a.m. on Zion s lawn area. Look for the special plate on the narthex table. Treasurer's Report for August In August we are $7,706 below our budgeted YTD income goal. The general fund balance is $20,516. YTD expenses are $161,122 compared to $161,152 in The August Mortgage Fund receipts were $4,193. YTD mortgage receipts are $27,789 compared to $26,421 in Each October Zion gathers and sends aid for the humanitarian efforts of Lutheran World Relief (LWR) which responds to crises here and abroad. Soap is a critical need, and we are asking everyone to help in this effort by bringing bars of soap, in its original wrappings, to the church through October 28. Zion s Quilters have been busy all year sewing quilts for LWR. The beautiful quilts will be put out on Friday, October 12, at 9:00 a.m., and displayed in the sanctuary from October 14-28, to be blessed and to brighten our worship with their rainbow of colors. Quilts and soap will be packed up at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 29. We ll need lots of extra hands for that task! Jeff & Lora Blackburn will deliver the quilts to Portland for us. Many thanks to them! Steadi Fall Prevention Program Join us at Zion on Tuesday, October 16, from 9:00-11:30 a.m., as Zion s Health Ministry presents an informative program of fall prevention awareness. We will be talking about fall risk factors and interventions, completing a fall risk assessment and having a TAI CHI talk, participatory demonstration by Jennny Sheldon, MsEd and Master Trainer Tai Chi for Health Institute. A sign-up sheet is in the Fellowship Hall.

Leaving a Legacy: Giving Retirement Assets Is a Tax Efficient Option Leaving a legacy to the Zion Lutheran Church Foundation can take many forms. One tax-efficient option is to consider using your retirement plan to fund your charitable bequest. Retirement plans such as pensions, profit sharing, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, SEP-IRAs, SIMPLE IRAs and traditional IRAs are considered income in respect of a decedent (IRD) property, which is subject to both estate and income tax. You receive favorable income tax treatment during your lifetime because you do not pay taxes on the amounts contributed into the plan. Your account accumulates and grows on a tax-deferred basis. At the time of distribution, amounts distributed will be treated as ordinary income and taxed to the individual receiving the distribution. At the time of death, any balance left in your qualified retirement plan generally will be included in your gross estate for estate tax purposes. If a qualified charity, such as the foundation, is the beneficiary of a retirement plan, both estate and income tax are avoided. Since a charity does not pay income tax, the charity will receive 100% of the amount of the retirement benefit. An individual beneficiary, on the other hand, may only receive $.65 on the dollar of the retirement benefit he or she inherits, depending on the income tax bracket. In terms of estate tax, as with other testamentary transfers to charity, leaving retirement assets to charity allows the estate to take a charitable deduction on the federal estate tax return based upon the value of the charitable bequest. You can designate retirement benefits to be paid to the foundation either during your lifetime or after your death. Most retirement plans allow the account owner to carve out a specific percentage for charity, or, you may be able to set up a separate retirement account for the foundation by splitting up the existing account or creating a new account. Given the potential for double taxation from estate and income tax, retirement plans are an attractive source of charitable bequests. Dick Hansen Memorial Car Show Results! Zion s 6 th annual Dick Hansen Memorial Car Show, part of our End-of-Summer Festival, was a fun time for our entrants and admirers.

The car show entrants also took up a collection and donated $200 to Zion s Youth Group.

5 Dick Hansen Memorial Car Show Results! Zion s 6 th annual Dick Hansen Memorial Car Show, part of our End-of-Summer Festival, was a fun time for our entrants and admirers. We had some great looking cars this year. Thank you to everyone who brought in their beautiful cars, and to everyone who voted for their favorite. We had 30 entries and 115 voters this year! The car show entrants also took up a collection and donated $200 to Zion s Youth Group. Our prize winners were: 1 st Prize of $100 Randy Holcombe 1956 Pontiac Safari Wagon 2 nd Prize of $75 Gary Meyer 1972 Dodge Challenger 3 rd Prize of $50 Richard & Cody Breeden 1967 Austin Healey A special Thank you! to Ray Holcomb for organizing the event, and Gary Meyer and Jim & Lynette Morrison who helped spread the word among the local car shows and car owners to bring in their cars, and helped register and park the entries. The Green Team needs you! The leaves are starting to fall but lawn mowing season hasn t ended! We still need volunteers to mow the church yard once a week. There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall if you can take a turn to help out. We also need to recognize those who have been mowing the church yard: Fred Netter, Wayne & Beth Jones, Ray Holcomb, Dave Degenhardt, Chuck Banister, Glenn Boehlke and Don Carlson. It has looked so nice during these past months. Thank you all for being so faithful this summer! WELCA/ Ruth Circle News: "If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you." Autumn is here and the chilly weather brings hope for the warm celebrations ahead with family and friends. The Ruth's Circle meeting Sept. 20, 2018, was a discussion to set our goals for events and celebrations during the remainder of the year. The first event is The Thankoffering by the women of Zion Lutheran Church (our 2017 offering was the largest in the nation). This year Lutheran charities will again receive our money to serve those in need. Our Christmas Bazaar will be held Dec. 1 st, to raise funds for two local charities. The ladies of Zion will remember people in our Redmond community with monetary gifts to Beulah's House and Jericho Road. To begin making items for the Christmas Bazaar; please, join me at a work shop to make Jam and Christmas Ornaments. If you have frozen berries or fruit to donate for the jam; or star and decorative buttons for the ornaments, please contact me. All the supplies will be available at the work shop, (the date will be set for a two hour day time session on a Saturday at the end of October). On Oct. 13 th, I will attend the ELCA Convention in Portland. This year s theme is "We are One in Christ". Information from the convention will be shared with everyone, when I return. Aging bodies don t work well when some medications and alcohol are mixed. Age related challenges such as poor balance & coordination, memory problems, and depression can be made worse when certain medications and alcohol are added to the picture. Here are 6 Tips for Managing Your Prescription Medications Safely 1. Ask your healthcare professional if your medication(s) interact with alcohol and 2. What foods, drinks, other medicines, overthe-counter, dietary supplements, or activities (driving, exercise) should I avoid while taking this medicine? 3. Read and follow all instructions on your medication s label 4. Follow instructions provided by your healthcare professional about your medication 5. Report any side effects from your medication to your healthcare professional 6. Don t stop taking your medication unless your healthcare professional says to stop. Learn about the medications that can interact and cause dangerous side effects when used with alcohol. Reviewing your medications with your local pharmacist and/or healthcare provider yearly and whenever a new prescription is added is recommended by Center for Medicare, National Institute of Health, National Community Pharmacy Association. They are located at 237 NW 9 th Street at the Cedar Street entrance of the church. They serve approximately 250 adults and approximately 125 children on a weekly schedule. Some of the items they are in need of includes cereal, peanut butter, Top Raman, puddings & jello and Hamburger Helper. They have plenty of can goods with the exception of canned meats. Happy Birthday Mable! Mable Christiansen of Zion Lutheran celebrated her 100 th birthday on September 7, surrounded family, friends, and 100 yellow roses. Special guests from California were former Zion members Bruce & Lois Maggio, who send greetings to all. The program is set up to help those who have emergency food needs in our community. At Zion we have designated the second Sunday of each month to highlight this need of our community neighbors by filling up the box with food. This box is located in the Narthex on the floor in the area where you hang up your coats. Please give prayerful consideration in giving to this program on the second Sunday of each month.
